Gayatri mantra

Gayatri Mantra
There is a famous prayer in Sanskrit that first appears in the Rig Veda (iii /62/10) called the gayatri mantra that almost every Hindu knows. In roman letters it is as follows:
Om bhur bhuvah svah
tat-savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi
dhiyo yo nah pracodayat

Gayatri in Devanagari letters
Literally hundreds of books and thousands of web pages are currently dedicated to explaining the esoteric meaning of this mantra, so I will not repeat that discussion. Instead I will provide a basic grammatical explanation of this most famous mantra and if you are new to Hinduism and want to know at least one prayer, this is the prayer you should learn.
Gayatri is actually the name for a Sanskrit poetical meter that contains three lines of eight syllables each. There are, therefore, many gayatri mantras, but this particular one is the oldest and most well known of all gayatri mantras. In Hinduism all Gods and Goddesses have a gayatri mantra associated with them. There is a gayatri for Ganesha, one for Shiva, one for Durga, one for Vishnu, one for Lakshmi, and so on. Most people are unaware of this fact and when Hindus talk about the gayatri mantra they mean thee gayatri mantra shown above, which is addressed to Savitri, the sun. The first line: om bhur bhuvah svah that you see above is not actually part of a gayatri mantra. It is a special utterance called vyahriti that has been added to the beginning of this famous gayatri . This vyahriti is important in and of itself and we will discuss it after we have explained the basic gayatri mantra. The three lines of this gayatri mantra are:
1. tat-savitur varenyam.
2. bhargo devasya dhimahi, and
3. dhiyo yo nah pracodayat
Here is a word-for-word breakdown of the gayatri mantra that most Hindus know.
tat–that (God)savitur–of the sunvarenyam–the bestbhargo (bhargas)–light, illuminationdevasya–divinedhimahi–let us meditate (a verb)dhiyo (dhiyah)–thought(s)yo (yah)–whichnah–of us, ourpracodayat–May it push, inspire (a verb)

Savitri: the Sunrise
The deity associated with this gayatri mantra, as we mentioned, is the sun, savitri. (The second word of this mantra.) The more common name for the sun is surya. Generally "surya" is the name for the sun while it is above the horizon and savitri is the sun as it is rising and setting, just below the horizon. There is a great metaphor in Hinduism that when understood explains a lot about the Hindu way of seeing the universe. The metaphor is: "the sun equals light, which equals knowledge, which equals consciousness." This metaphor applies not only to the gayatri mantra, but also to the design of temples and homes, and to details such as why we circumambulate from left to right and offer incense and lamps in a clockwise direction.
The most important word in the gayatri mantra is the word, "tat," which is a neuter pronoun meaning "that." It is a reference to "that One," God. According to the metaphor mentioned above, the sun, which is the source of illumination, heat, food and so many other things in our life, can naturally be seen as the "representative" or symbol of God in this world. There are two verbs in the gayatri mantra, dhimahi and prachodayat. Dhimahi means, "let us meditate." So, "let us meditate on the light (bhargo) of the sun which represents God." This is the basic meaning of the first part of the gayatri mantra.
The second part is also straight forward. The verb prachodayat literally means , "it should push," but in more poetic language we can translate it as "let it inspire." Dhiyah is "thoughts," so dhiyo yo nah prachodayat means, "may our thoughts be inspired" So the most literal meaning of the gayatri mantra is, "Let us meditate on the light of the sun which represents God, and may our thoughts be inspired by that divine light."

Gayatri Devi
As with most things Hindu, the gayatri mantra is also personified as the Goddess, Gayatri Devi. She is the wife of Brahma and is pictured with five heads sitting on a lotus. She is the embodiment of the supreme brahman. You will also see other depictions of Gayatri Devi that vary somewhat.
The gayatri mantra is traditionally whispered into the ear of a young boy in a ceremony called The Thread Giving Ceremony (upanayana), which is one of the rites of passage followed by many Hindus. In addition, the gayatri mantra is repeated during daily prayers performed by many Hindus three times a day, while facing the sun: at sunrise, at noon and at sun set. It is also common to recite the gayatri as part of a havan, or to recite it in a collective way in temples or homes.

The Great Utterance
The first part of the gayatri mantra, om bhur bhuvah svah, which we mentioned at the beginning as not part of the mantra, is called vyahriti or the "great utterance." This mantra is repeated not only in conjunction with the gayatri mantra, but also separately during havans or fire ceremonies. The word om is a auspicious sound made at the beginning of many prayers. The ex-pression bhur bhuvah and svah is technical, but a simple way to think of it is as a "call to creation," that the light of the sun (the light of God) shines on the earth (bhur), in the sky (bhuvah), and in space (svah), and therefore the implication is, "let that light also shine on me."
The technical explanation vyahriti has to do with subtle practices of meditational yoga. This earth is simply one of many planes of existence. In fact, above this earth are six higher planes, heavens as it were. Including this earth, there are seven planes up (heavens) and seven planes down, or hells below this earth. The earth is in the middle. If you have ever heard the ex-pression, "he is in seventh heaven" you should understand that this is a reference to the Hindu idea of heavens. The seventh heaven is the highest heaven. The first three of these planes starting with the earth are called bhur, bhuvah and svah. The utterancebhur bhuvah svah, therefore, refers to the first three subtle planes of existence that may be reached in meditation by a yogi.

Courtesy: Murali Subramanian

Gayathri mantra

==================

Excerpts from Anand Gayathri katha

Mahatma Anand Swami was among the greatest Gayatri sadhakas of his time. He held many high positions in Arya Samaj from time to time and was also known for his journalistic attainments. He spread the message of Mother Gayatri inside and outside the country till the ripe old age of 92. His personal sadhana of Gayatri was of the highest order and was reflected in equal measure in all dimensions of his personality - his words, thoughts and actions.

Mahatma Anand Swami wrote Gayatri Mahamantra, Anand Gayatri Katha and many other books on spirituality. Anand Gayatri Katha among these has descriptions of the many miracles of Gayatri sadhana that he personally experienced in the course of his life. Some of these experiences are being given below in his own words.

"In my childhood, when I was studying in the 6th or 7th standard I was a very dull student. The teachers would routinely stand me on the bench at the very beginning of the class and this practice would unfailingly continue in every succeeding class for hours together. Upon returning home, the father would beat me and say - 'you are a moron, wholly incapable of doing anything'! I would weep and reply - 'Father! I do study attentively. But what can I do? Whatever I read I just cannot retain it in my memory'. But the father would not believe me. This routine of daily beating and humiliation depressed me so much that even at that tender age I began to seriously think about committing suicide. Death would be better than this humiliating life. One day, after the classes were over, I went to the small stream flowing by the side of my village. It was rainy season and the river was full. I advanced to the bridge across it and flung myself into the swirling waters
underneath. I was determined to die but God had willed otherwise. Probably He had some other scheme for me. The fast currents carried me two miles downstream and threw me on the bank in an unconscious state. The locals there recognized me and took me home.

"One day Swami Nityanand of the Arya Samaj came to visit our village, Jallalpur, and camped in my family's orchard. My father assigned me the duty of taking meals to him daily. One day, upon my father's instruction I took our buffalo to the village pond. The buffalo slowly advanced to the deep waters. I was a kid; I began to shout at her and throw pebbles. Finally the buffalo emerged on the other side of the pond and crossed into the zamindar's fields. By the time I could skirt the pond and reach there, she had ruined a good part of the standing crops. The zamindar came running and thrashed me severely. My bones began to ache. Earlier that day I had taken beatings in school, too. When after the buffalo episode I finally came home, the father was angry at my being so late and he also beat me. I began to pray to God about what I should do. Father then ordered me to take food to Swamiji in the orchard. I did accordingly.

Swamiji started eating and I stood by the side - sad and sullen. Swamiji occasionally looked at my face and after finishing the meal enquired, 'Khushal Chand! What is the matter? Why are you so downcast today? At these words of compassion I began to sob. Swamiji sat me on his lap and asked, 'What has happened?' Why are you so miserable?' I narrated the whole tale of my woes to him. I told him that I was mentally dull and could not recollect any lesson even after trying my best. Swamiji soothed me. He wrote out Gayatri mantra on a slip of paper, gave it to me and said, 'Here is the medicine for your ailment. Get up very early in the morning, about 2 or 3 a.m., when other members of the family are fast asleep, take bath and recite this mantra.' He also explained to me at that time some meanings of the mantra, which I have not forgotten even after such a long time.

From then onwards, I began to get up early. But I felt sleepy during japa. To solve this problem I would tie my choti with a long rope to the iron hook on the ceiling. After 5 or 6 months the effects of the japa were discernible. Previously my answers would be invariably wrong; now I began to pass the examinations. My teachers thought that I was copying someone. I told them that it was not so, that I was only chanting the Gayatri mantra regularly. They were skeptical, but nevertheless I started securing good marks. I wrote a poem too and got a reward of one pound from my teacher. I showed the poem to my father who gave me another pound.

A few months after this another significant even occurred. The annual festival of the Arya Samaj of Jalalpur Jattan was being held. Mahatma Hansraj had delivered a lecture. I prepared a report of this lecture and showed it to him. He asked, 'Whose son are you?' I replied, 'The secretary of Arya Samaj Lala Ganeshdasji is my father'. Mahatmaji enquired from my father about the work I did. My father said, 'He is poor in studies. So I have installed a socks-weaving unit for him.' Mahatmaji said, 'Munshiji, this work is not suitable for the boy. Assign him to me. I will put him to the work for which he is suitable.' Father replied, 'How can I refuse? He is your child. Do as you think fit.'

"Sometime later Mahatmaji summoned me to Lahore. There, I began to work in the Arya Gazette on a monthly salary of thirty rupees. With time I rose to be its editor. During those days there broke out the Moplah revolt in Malabar region. Thousands of Hindus were killed or forcibly converted to Islam. Something had to be done. But the press of the time was adopting a posture of complete silence on this happening. No one wanted to print and bring to light this tyranny on the Hindus. I felt that this was no way to bring about Hindu-Muslim unity. After much deliberation we started Milap magazine with a view to organize the Hindus. Its aim was to usher in Hindu-Muslim unity based on right behavior and conduct and to generate a sense of security.

By the grace of the Mother Gayatri the publication of Milap was a success in spite of initial hiccups. House, cars, cattle and other kinds of riches became available to me. I was blessed with sons and daughters too. I got everything because Mother Gayatri is the bestower of heavenly gifts - progeny, health, happiness,...

In Lahore University's hall an attempt was made on the life of the then Governor of Punjab. Four young men were arrested, prosecuted and awarded death sentence. One of them was my son Ranvir. Meanwhile another mishap occurred. During an Arya Samaj ceremony I slipped and fell down a high hill. The spine was injured. I lay in a Lahore hospital bed, the whole body in plaster. People would come to sympathize with me on the award of capital punishment to Ranvir, their faces showing a sad look appropriate to the occasion. But they would find me cheerful and non-chalant. This would surprise them and they would exclaim, 'Do you have a stone for heart. Your son is standing in the death row and you are smiling'. I would reply confidently, 'Listen, if my good lies in the separation of my son from me, he will be separated for sure. But if our good is destined in his survival, no power on earth will be able to snatch him away.' People would weep for Ranvir; I never
did. One day Swami Satyadev, who was guru of the king of Jammu and Kashmir, came to meet me. He looked at me and said, 'You can remain undisturbed and joyous even in the face of this calamity. Who then can take away your son?' His words proved true. Ranvir was discharged and freed.

Mother Gayatri is the bestower of not only material benefits but also spiritual gifts. She purifies the soul and after granting longevity, children and all kinds of glory and riches, beckons one to accompany Her to Brahmaloka (the highest celestial abode). Leaving all these things behind, I put on the ochre robe and marched onto the path shown by the Mother.

Right from the age of eight there has not passed a day when I have not drunk the nectar of Mother Gayatri's grace. The purpose of narrating all this is to emphasize that even in this age of Kali, worship of Mother Gayatri enables one to get all the things about which Bhishma Pitamah had told Yudhisthira. What the rishis and seers over the ages including Shankaracharya, Maharishi Dayanand, Gandhi, Tagore, Tilak and Ramkrishna Paramhansa have preached cannot be untrue. I have myself experienced it personally. Hence I do assert - it is true, it is true, it is true!"

Gayathri mantra

My grand father used to tell us that if for three generations people do not perform Gayatri Japam(Chanting) properly, even the so-called priestly class will get downgraded. His advice to those who have leave their homes for work was that at least on Sundays and other holidays one should perform Gayatri Japam1008 times. "Sahasra Paramaa Devi satamadhya dasaavara", says the Taitrrya Aranyaka of Yajur Veda. It means chanting Gayatri 1008 times gives the best result, chanting 108 times gives mediocre results while chanting ten times Gayatri the least. It is said that best results of chanting Gayatri are obtained by chanting in early morning, noon and evening twilight . Chanting during these three interrugnums are stated to confer on us tranquility and peace. It is also said that whatever may be the emergency, at least 10 Gayatri should be chanted in these time periods. This should not be interpreted to mean that it is sufficient to chant only 10
Gayatris even when we have all the time for doing Gayatri Japam. In the morning Gayatri is to be meditated as Brahmaroopini,in midday as Sivaroopini and in the evening as Vishnuroopini. Again, Gayatri is also meditated as Savitri in noon and Saraswati in the evening. When a brahmin boy undergoes Upanayanam(investiture of sacred thread) ie., when he is supposed to born for the second time, his Acharya tells him to perform Sandhyavandanam and Gayatri Japam 3 times a day. In the morning 108 gayatris are to be performed,32 at noon and 64 in the evening.

Gayatri is said to contain the efficacy and energy of of all the Veda mantras . In fact, they say that Gayatri gives strength to all Veda Mantras. If Gayatri is not chanted, other mantras lose their strength. Gayatri is an invalueable aid to liberation. Gayatri Mantra is uttered while offering'Argya'(devotional offering of water) to Sun God three times a day. In the morning Argya is to be offered before sunrise, in mid-day when the sun`s position is exactly above one`s head and in the evening before sunset.

Just as medicine is necessary for curing fever, Gayatri is essential medicine for curing the disease,as it were, of bondage for the Atma. Gayatri should not be abandoned under any circumstance. This is more important than medicine.

Gayatri Upasana(worship) has to be done in the form of mother. Mother is the most Loving entity for all of us. We know that God can come to us in any form. If God comes in the form of mother that will be more beneficial to us. The Vedas proclaim that Gayatri is such a mother.
I happen to know a few Brahmanas who perform 1008 Gayatri Japams daily for many years. The Brahmanas who officiate in Shraddha rituals as Pitrs. perform 1008 Gayatri Japams as a Prayaschitta.

Scientific meaning for Gaytri Mantra !

GAYATRI MANTRA

scientific meaning for Gaytri Manthra

Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma. This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Ved-Mata, the mother of the Vedas.
Ombhur bhuvah swah
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dheemahi
Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat
The literal meaning of the mantra is:
O God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty. You are all Light. You are all Knowledge and Bliss. You are Destroyer of fear, You are Creator of this Universe, You are the Greatest of all. We bow and meditate upon Your light. You guide our intellect in the right direction. The mantra, however, has a great scientific import too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition. The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called Milky Way or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. All planets round the sun. Each of the above bodies revolves round at its own axis as well. Our sun along with its family takes one round of the galactic center in 22.5 crore years. All galaxies including ours are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 mile s per second.
And now the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step by step: (A) OM BHUR BHUVAH SWAH:
Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om. The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it to other colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, "Omiti ekaksharam brahma", meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12). This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally heard beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy = 1/2 MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or store house of energy (prana).

B. TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM: Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person.Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars). A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under:-
C) BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI:
Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do japa of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra). This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under:
D) DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path. Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra: The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing/respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our(nah) intellect dhiyo. So we notice that the important points hinted in the mantra are:-

1) The total kinetic energy generated by the movement of galaxies acts as an umbrella and balances the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence it was named as the Pranavah (body of energy). This is equal to 1/2 mv2 (Mass of galaxies x velocity2). 2) Realizing the great importance of the syllable OM, the other later date religions adopted this word with a slight change in accent, viz., amen and Ameen.

Gayathri mahimai

GAYATHRI MAHIMA AND AIHIKA PHALAM(as told by Maharshis and some texts):

MANU: "Tribhya eva thu Vedebyhah padam padamaduduham". It means that each pada of Gayathri is taken from one of the three Vedas. Bhagavan created the Gayathri by selecting three Padams from each of the three Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda and Sama Veda. Atharvana Veda has its own Gayathri. It is the Thureeya Gayathri that I had mentioned earlier in the write-up. To receive instruction in it, you must have a second upanayana).

Anybody who chants the Gayathri will get the benefit of having chanted the Vedas. The sin of having skipped any type of Nithya Karma will be washed away if one chants 1000 Gayathris (now we know why we SHOULD do 1000 Gayathris on the next day of Avani Avittam. If you skip Gayathri Japam on the 'Gayathri Japam' day i.e., next day of Avani Avittam, god save you).Gayathri is greater than SAMADHI which paves way for Moksham. Since, there is 'OM' karam; this itself is Dhyanam, Samadhi etc. There is nothing greater than this.

YAMA: Once, Brahma placed Samhithai, Shaakhai, Padam, Kramam, Jatam and Ghanam (the various units/phases in studying the Vedas) along with the four Vedas on one side of the weighing instrument and Gayathri on the other side and found that both match exactly equal. So, chanting Gayathri is equal to chanting the Vedas.

SHRI SHANKARA: Among Snaana Manthrams, Aghamarshanam is the greatest; among Homa Manthrams, Vyaahruthi is the greatest and among Mantra Japam Gayathri is the greatest.

BRAHMA: There is no Japam Manthram better than Gayathri. There is no better penance than Gayathri. There is no Homa Manthram better than Gayathri. There is no object more suitable for Dhyanam than Gayathri.

VYAASA: Chanting Gayathri 10 times will relieve sins made for 3 days. 100 times Gayathri japam will relieve all the sins ever made. 1000 times Gayathri Japam will relieve all Upa-Paathakas. 1 crore times Gayathri Japam will result in achieving anything one ever wanted. One can become a king. One can even become GOD.

SAMVARTHA: The most suitable Manthram that is capable of washing away all sins is Gayathri. It will give benefit only if discipline is consumption of food and Acharam is followed strictly. Doing 1 lakh Gayathri Japam will relieve one from all sins. One who has had inacceptable food (eating food made by anybody other than a Brahmin, meat etc,) will become pure only if he chants 100 times Gayathri.

VISHWAMITHRA: There shall be no fear in the mind of the one who chants Gayathri. There is no Manthram than can match the Gayathri in all four Vedas put together. Vedam, Yaagam, Daanam, Thapas etc., will not match to even one in a hundredth of Gayathri's greatness. Leave what you may; but do not leave the Gayathri.

YOGA YAAGNAVALKYA: Observing fasting the previous day and chanting 1000 Gayathris the next day will relieve all sins except Brahma-Hathya. If one chants Gayathri regularly one will not have to bear the sin of having taken Paapa Daanam (in shardham, kaaryam, chaaya daanam etc). Taking bath after chanting 100 Gayathri, Chanting 100 Gayathri submersed in water, drinking water after chanting 100 Gayathris will all relieve one from all sins. Doing Gayathri Thila Homam (homam with Gingely seeds) along with ghee will relieve one from all sins.

MAARKANDEYA: Even if one happens to do all types of sins known to exist, chanting 10,000 Gayathri will dissolve all those sins. It will also give long life.

CHATHURVIMSHATHI MATHAM: 1 crore Gayathri Japam will relieve Brahma Hathya; 80 lakhs Gayathri Japam will relieve sin of having drunk alcohol; 70 lakhs Gayathri Japam will relieve the sin of having stolen gold; 60 lakhs Gayathri Japam will relieve the sin of having slept with Guru's wife; 80,000 Gayathri Japam done in the morning will relieve all sins.

YAAGNAVALKYA: Gayathri Thila homam will relieve all sins.

VASISHTA: Any type of sins will be washed away by doing Gayathri Japam or Gayathri Thila homam.

SMRUTHI RATHNAM: Any one charges who money and teaches Gayathri will become a Chandaala immediately (Chandaala is the lowest of castes known to exist. He is a one who burns bodies in a Cremation ground).

Gayathri Japam: Immediately after Avani Avittam it has been laid down in Sasthras to chant 1000 Gayathris. It is stated as the Praayaschitha Karma so as to not to become a Paapi by having committed sins knowingly or unknowingly.

For eating Braahmanaardham, the Praayaschitham is 100 Gayathri.

For having eaten for Maasyam, Shodha-kumbham, Aabdhikam, Sapindeekaranam, the Praayaschitham is 1008 Gayathris. After doing the regular Sandhyavandanam, after 08:30 AM one has to start such Praayaschitha Japams including Gayathri Japam related to Avani Avittam.

If one happens to pass urine or motion without making the Poonal in the form of a garland and keep it secured by keeping the Poonal circled in your ears, one has to immediately remove that Poonal, wear a new Poonal and do 108 Gayathri Japam. For all other Vedic mistakes Gayathri is stated as the curse-breaker.  If one skips Sandhyavandanam continuously for 3 days he looses Brahmanyam and is born a dog.

Devi Bhagavatham states in detail about Gayathri from 11th Skandam 1st chapter to 7th chapter. Every Aksharam has Rishi, Chandas, Devatha, Thathvam, Mudra, Shakthi, Varnam etc. must be learnt through a suitable Guru. These will give special results. Interested people can also chant, Gayathri Kavacham, Gayathri Sahasra Naamam, Gayathri Shaapa-Vimochana Manthram get the blessings of the divine mother.

Conclusion:

The following has been extracted from www.kamakoti.org/hindudharma/part17. (Said by Paramacharyal, H.H. Sri Chandrashekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal):

"If the Gayathri mantra is learned in childhood itself it would be retained like a nail driven into a tender tree. Gayathri imparts in great measure mental strength, luster and health. It will increase the child's power of concentration, sharpen his intelligence, and make him physically strong. Later in life, when he feels the urge of Kama, Gayathri will prevent him from being dragged downward and be a protective shield for his body and intelligence. When one learns to meditate on the Gayathri in childhood itself, it would be a great help, as one grows up, in not wasting one's seed, in acquiring Brahmic luster and qualities like studiousness, humility, devotion to God and interest in matters of the Self.

While speaking about this mantra the Vedas use these words: "Gayathrim Chandasam Mata". Here, "Chandas" means the Vedas. So Gayathri is the mother of all Vedic mantras (i.e., the Vedas proclaim them so).

If the Gayathri has not been chanted for three generations in the family of a Brahmin, its members lose caste (they cease to be Brahmins). The quarter where such Brahmins live cannot be called an "Agrahara". It is perhaps not yet three generations since Brahmins gave up the Gayathri. So they still may be called Brahmins.

This mantra is to be repeated only by men. Women benefit from the men performing the japa. Similarly when the three varnas practice Gayathri Japa, all other castes enjoy the benefit flowing from it. We may cease to perform a rite if the fruits yielded by them are enjoyed exclusively by us. But we cannot do so if others also share in them. Those entitled to Gayathri mantra are to regard themselves as trustees who have to mutter it on behalf of others like women and the fourth Varna who are not entitled to it. If they fail in their duty of trustees, it means they are committing an irremediable offence.

At least on Sundays, all those who wear the sacred thread must do Gayathri japa a thousand times. They must not eat unclean food, go to unclean places and must atone for lapses in ritual observances and in maintaining ritual purity. Henceforth, they must take every care to see that their body is kept chaste and fit for it to absorb mantric power.

Today, the fire of mantric power has been put out (or it is perhaps like dying embers). The body of Brahmin has been subjected to undesirable changes and impure substances have found a place in it. But may be a spark of the old fire still gives off a dim light. It must be made to burn brighter. One day it may become a blaze. This spark is Gayathri. It has been handed down to us through the ages.

Let us all pray to God that he will have mercy upon us so that the fire of mantras is never extinguished in us and that it will keep burning brighter and brighter."

Gayathri Purascharanam

GAYATHRI PURASCHARANAM:
For any manthram to become Siddhi, first, Purascharanam has to be done.
Vishwamithra did such a Purascharanam and got to see Gayathri in her
full glory and received Brahmanayam. There are several texts that tell
us about Gayathri Purascharanam. Devi Bhagavatham 11th Skandam, 21st
Chapter tells us the following:

Purascharanam has to be done in a holy place. If one is doing a
Purascharanam for any other manthram, there has to be a minimum of
10,000 Gayathri to back it up.
For Gayathri Purascharanam once has to first do Kruchram and cleanse our
body. Then one has to do Anugnai, Sankalpam, Navagraha Preethi, and
Naandi Shrardham. One has to decide the number of japam to be done;
state it in the Sankalpam and do it likewise without fail. One has to do
1 lakh Japam for every aksharam (i.e., 24, 00,000). Then, one has to
do10th of that count as Homam. One has to do 3,000 homam for each of the
below separately: ghee, milk, rice, gingely seeds, Dhoorvai, lotus
flower, yavam and honey (3*8=24). Only after this, to get desired
results, should one do the Japam and homam separately.

GAYATHRI KAAMYA PHALAM: (benefits of Gayathri based on certain
conditions)
* If one chants 1000 Gayathri for 1 year, he will get long life,
good health, physical strength and money.
* If one does 25 lakhs homam with curd, the whole body will become
full of Gayathri and will get Ashtanga Yoga Siddhi.
* One would get salvation (moksham) for 1 lakh homam with Lotus
flowers.
* Any type of disease or illness will cured if one does 1008
Gayathri with Shankha Pushpam daily until the disease is cured.
* As stated above, if one does homam with achyranthes aspera
(nayuruvi) and branches of a banyan tree (arasa samith) fits will be
cured.
* Similarly, if one does homam with Athi samith, megha rogam will
be cured.
* Similarly, if one does homam with honey or sugarcane juice
hallucination and other mental disorders will be cured.
* If one does 1008 homam with athi, banyan tree branches for one
month, cow, elephant and horse's illness will be cured.
* As above, if one does homam with ghee, snake hills and ant hills
will not crop inside our houses.
* If one does 1008 homam with 'kaattu nochi' (Debregeasia
longifolia) for 7 days, earthquakes and lightning will not strike.
* If one chants 100 gayathri and throws mud balls in front of
storm and fire they will cease at that point. Even enemies will not dare
against us.
* If one chants Gayathri 100 times in one's mind, he will freed
from all material bondage.
* If one chants 100 times in water and drinks that water poison
will be broken. Evil spirits will flee.
* If one chants Gayathri 100 times and smears ash, fever will be
cured.
* If one does 100 times homam with lotus flowers or banyan
branches or palacha samith everyday, one will get Lakshmi kataksham.
* As above, if one does homam with puffed rice (pori) or Thri
Madhuram one will get a suitable bride or groom.
* If one does 100 times homam for 7 days with RED lotus, gold will
prosper in house.
* Until one gets the result, if one does payasam nivedyam to sun
god and do 100 times homam with paayasannam, a child will be born.
* If one does 100 times homam for 7 days with arugam pillu, milk
honey etc, untimely death (Apa-Mruthyu) can be avoided.
* If one observes fasting once a day for 3 days and does 1000
times homam with arugam pillu, milk honey etc, untimely death
(Apa-Mruthyu) can be avoided.
* If one observes fasting continuously for 7 days and do 1000
homam daily with erukku samith, one will find victory in everything.
* If one does 1008 times homam with payasam, pushpam and nochi
samith, it will rain.
* If one stands in water up to midriff level and does 1000 japam
with fasting, it will rain.
* If one does 1000 Gayathri Japam with Kumbhaka Pranayamam for 3
months all desires will be fulfilled.
* If one stands in one leg and lifts both the hands above head and
does 3000 japam for 1 year, all desires will be fulfilled. One will get
to know the Past, present and future.
* Similarly, if one does such japam for 4 years, one will get to
see Indradi devathas.
* If one does such japam for 5 years, one will get Ashta maha
siddhi.
* If such japam is done for 6 years, one can take any form of
one's choice (icha roopam).
* If such Japam is done for 7 years one can become devas
(demigod).
* If such Japam is done for 12 years, one can become Brahma
(Brahma is a post; it is nor permanent. It lasts for 100 Brahma years).
* If one does 100 gayathri for 1 month, all our sins will be
washed away.
"Vedho Nithyamadheeyathaam"

Tomorrow is Gayathri Japam. Let us do the Gayathri Japam with full enthu & let us immerse ourselves in the Japam.

Performing Gayathri japam

Things to be Avoided during Japam:
Please wear the Anga Vasthram (Uttareeyam) like a Poonal, close your
hands with it and do the Gayathri Japam. One should not cover the head
and body and do the Gayathri Japam.
While doing Japam one should not talk with others; see things around
you; laugh about something; support your back on Pillars etc; rest one
leg on top of the other, lose interest; think of something else; yawn,
keep spitting. Such Japams will become fruitless. If one happens to
yawn, sneeze in between the Japam, then one should touch your nose then
touch the ear while chanting 'Om'. This is called as the 'Shrothra
Aachamanam'. Or even if one sees the Sun or the Moon that is enough.
One should not see dog, pig, donkey, underprivileged person, woman on
menstruation, eagle, and monkey while doing the Japam. If one happens to
see the above, follow the above suggestion. The reason that people often
have their Japa Mantapam in the river or in the banks is to avoid seeing
all those mentioned above.
One should compulsorily not speak with others during the Japam. If there
is any immediate necessity, one should at least finish the japam and
then speak. Otherwise, one should to start again from the beginning and
then continue.
Japam, Homam, Pooja, Bath, Teeth Brush, Sandhyavandanam, Dressing-up,
Elder's presence, Temple, during passing of Urine or Motion are the
times when one should not speak as per Dharma Sasthras. In case of
necessities (except at the time of passing motion), one should do
Shrothra Aachamanam and chant Bhagavan-Naama and continue further.

One should not control passing of Motion and do any Vaidika Karma. One
should never touch places below the hip while doing Japam. If it
happens, one should immediately wash your hands and do the Shrothra
Aachamanm as stated earlier.
I would like to clarify one point here. When vaadhyars ask any of us to
wash our hands with the Pancha Paathram in front of us, I have seen
people dipping their hands inside the Pancha Paathram and then wash the
hands. The idea here, is not to Wet your hands, It is to cleanse your
hands for some reason. Instead of dipping your hands you might as well
not do anything at all. At least the water in the Pancha Paathram will
remain clean.
Next time you hear someone asking to wash your hands with a Pancha
Paathram in front, take the water in Udharani in your right hand, and
raise the end of Udharani which has water, so that, the water happens to
flow through the Udharani to your right hand and with that water in your
right hands, you can wash your other hand. This same principle holds
good in the above case. In fact, everytime..................
One should not do he Japam while: wearing a shirt; tying a Turban in
your head; without Anga Vasthram; with slippers; if a married man
without Pancha Kacham; without tying your tuft (shikhai) or keeping it
loose and tying it at the end so that it falls on your back; lying down
(sleeping posture); walking; chanting it loudly, so that others can hear
it; eating something; stuffing something in your mouth; sitting in a
chair and leaving your legs dangling down; shaking your legs in previous
stated position; holding your Poonal in your hands; counting with the
help of Poonal; while driving. Such Japams will not yield any results.
Chanting so that your lips part/move and others can hear is 'Adhamam'.
One should not chant that way. Chanting so that, only lips part/move,
but the sound does not carry outwards beyond you is called 'Madhyamam'.
Chanting so that neither lips part/move nor does the sound carry outward
is 'Uthamam'.
Manthram means 'protecting the one who chants' and 'protecting the
mind'. So, one has to think about Gayathri's Swaroopam in mind and do
the Japam. If possible, do the Kumbhaka Praanayamam (i.e., holding your
breath) and do the Japam. It will give special results. But it is not
compulsory.
Just out of too much interest, some people are known to chant it while
walking, sleeping etc. But, this is totally against the Sasthras. One
can, however, meditate on Gayathri's Swaroopam. But should not do Japam:
without count; Akaalam (un-time); with theendal; while walking etc.
Thinking that counting disturbs Meditation and Doing Japam without
counting is incorrect. One has to count, chant and meditate at the same
time.
