Guru Bhakti - HH. Sri.Bharathi theertha of Sringeri

Ananya Bhakti

15. Ananya Bhakti - Its results

Why do we pray to God? Mostly to fulfill our desires. 'Oh God, my boss is very strict. Please change him. My son should get a white collared job. My daughter should get married to a rich man without any dowry.' In one word we want God to change our fate or we want God to change Himself!

Some people pray to boast about their prayer. Some pray to test God's power. They learn prayer moves mountains'. A girl sits before a mountain, prays for sometime and opens her eyes to test the impact of her prayer. She is only happy it hasn't moved, because it confirms her doubt.

Some pray for hours together only mechanically with no deep involvement. Swami Sukhabodhanand quotes beautiful example for it. Once a religious person was blessed with a pious horse by his guru. If the person says 'Oh my God' the horse will run forward and if he says 'Thank you God' it will stop. 'Oh that's simple. I think of God all the time 'thought the man. He kept on saying 'oh my God' and the horse was racing ahead filling him with joy. Suddenly when he observed where he was the horse was heading towards a big valley. He was so scared. In his fear he said 'Oh my God' it still galloped After a frantic minute, he remembered what he should say 'Thank you God' The next second the horse stopped at the edge of the path. Just one more step, he would have fallen into the valley. Seeing how narrowly he escaped death, he heaved a deep sigh of relief and exclaimed. 'Oh, my God!' That's all! He fell into the valley.

Then how should we pray? Lord Krishna proclaimed it in the Bhagavad Gita.

anan yas cintayanto mam
ye janah paryupasate
tesam nit yabhi yuktanam
yoga-ksemam vahamy aham

Synonyms
ananyah—having no other object; cintayantah—concentrating; mam—on Me; ye—those who; janah—persons; paryupasate—properly worship; tesam—of them; nitya—always; abhiyuktanam—fixed in devotion; yoga—requirements; ksemam—protection; vahami—carry; aham—I.
Translation
Whoever prays to me with no other thought whoever thinks of me incessantly, I will take care of their welfare.

This sloka has its special significance in the Gita. If we compare Gita to a garland, this sloka can be compared to the central bunch which hangs down in the garland. This sloka is in the middle of the Gita. It has a fragrance of a flower with a great meaning. It answers many doubts of the people.
Ananya Bhakti. If we put one step towards God, God puts ten steps towards us' proclaim the Sastras. If we fulfill our duty, God fulfils his duty. If we make sound near a mountain, it gives a resound. If we don't get a resound, it means we didn't make a sound properly.

Once a man cried, when he was engulfed in a problem, 'Oh God! Why did you forget me?' Promptly God answered 'Why did you forget me, my son?' A similar point is found in the Bible.

'Ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened'.

People are asking, seeking and knocking but wrong things like material comforts.

Ye bhajani tumam bhaktya mayite teshuchapyahan

'Whoever prays to me sincerely, they live in my heart and I live in their hearts' proclaims God. God treats everyone equally but we are not able to understand God. There may be treasure hidden in the house, but unless a person knows where it is, he cannot enjoy it. The same way, unless we learn about God, we cannot enjoy his blessings. To seek them, we should pray with Ananya Bhakti.

'I will take care of them' what an assurance! Vidya Prakasananda Giri, swami explains this beautifully we don't have to worry thus - who will protect me? Who will save me! 'Why fear when I am here' says God! All that He requires is reciprocation from us. Even when we buy a small object in the market, we have to shell down some money for it. How can we expect God to give us something just like that? We believe in rights, but not responsibilities. The swami explains, God is asking us, 'Oh man! You want Moksha, you seek eternal bliss, you require unattachment, but where is the price for that? You first pay its value. Its value is your sacrifice, your Bhakti, your 'Ananya daiva chintana'.

We need not hesitate to leave everything When God himself is beside us, why should we worry? He saved Ambarish, Draupadi, Gajendra, Prahlad etc. Won't he save us?

'Ananya' means only on God, not on any other physical object. There is no point in dividing our heart into various pieces and distributing it on various earthly pleasures and just retaining one piece of heart of God. That is not 'Ananya'. So we should distract our mind from material comforts and concentrate on God. 'Ye Jana' clearly explains 'whoever'. God has no caste or creed difference.

What we offer to God is not more important than how we offer. He gives not the best who gives the most. So we should see the depth of our prayer but not the extent of the surface of it.

In the same chapter, Krishna added, 'Oh Arjuna, know it for certain my devotee will never suffer. He never falls. This is the truth.' To be His bhakta, we have to concentrate on God.'

Jnatum - understand God
When we pray sincerely and continuously to God, God who will be pleased by our faith, bless us. When we praise an ordinary human being, he showers us with some gifts. In such a case won't God bless us? What will He give wealth, health, power or liberation? Though God can provide us liberation, He doesn't give it. He leads us to the path of jnana which makes us acquire atmajnana.

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te

On those ever united through devotion with me and worshipping me with love. I confer that yoga of wisdom through which they come to me. The word Dadam means I confer. So God has promised the returns. There is no going back against it. So Bhaktas can be rest assured of Jnana and subsequently liberation.

We are more used to idol worship of God. We pray to sakara rupa of God. Then how can we change our attitude? How can we look with in from looking outside? This sloka answers our doubts. God answers 'Oh devotees! Don't you worry! You continue your practice. I will provide you the required Jnana yoga. I will help you attain self realization. 'Two qualities of Bhaktas are highlighted here - 1. Sata ta yuktanam - always thinking of God. 2. 'Preetipurvakam' with love. So even ordinary men can become saint through incessant prayer to God and through their loving devotion to God. This also drives out doubts about Bhakti and Jnana. Bhakti can lead us to Jnana. So we need not give up our religious practices.

Drastum -see God
Arjuna was shown viswaroopa can everybody see it? No, not everybody proclaimed Krishna.

Na tu mam sakyase drastumane naiva swa chakshusha
Divyam dadami te chakshunu pasy a me yoga mai swaryam (11-8)

But surely you cannot see me with these human eyes of yours; therefore I vouchsafe to you the divine eye. With this you behold my divine power of yoga.

Whoever has divine eyes, divine vision can behold the divine presence of God. With our naked eyes we cannot see for instance micro organisms, the stars in the Milky Way, the bones in the body etc. We need a microscope, a telescope and an x-ray to see them. How then can we see God with our naked eye? Because we cannot see him thus, we cannot declare, 'There is no God!' The sunshine dazzles our bright eyes, but a blind man cannot see. So also the omnipotent God shines all over the world but an Ajnani cannot see him. He needs special spectacles as we need for 3D pictures, but these spectacles are not given just like that, we have to acquire them through our incessant practice, undaunted spirit and strong belief in God. Arjuna has acquired that stage so he was provided the Divine eye-sight.

'Through ananya bhakti, single minded devotion however; one can see my viswaroopa but not through yagna or tapas.' This takes us back to 'Ananya chintayantomam' the strong devotion to God. The word 'ananya' is repeatedly used in Gita. Many are devoted to God, but it is not 'ananya' bhakti. Such devotion cannot help him experience God. 'Anya' is some other thing. 'Ananya' no other thing. They should be interested in God but no other thing. Initially person's love may be divided but by practice he can develop it into undivided love for God.

Pravesti, - enter God
Once we develop this 'Ananya' Bhakti, we can not only see God but also enter God says Krishna. 'Jnatum, drastum, Pravesum.' - meaning understand God, see God and enter God.

Vidya Prakasananda Giri swami compares it to a mango. We learn about the taste of a mango in the market. That is the first step. We enjoy the news. Then we go to the market, keep it before us and derive pleasure by seeing it. That is the second step. Then we cut it and eat it. It has entered our body and has become one with us. That gives us the greatest happiness. That is the third stage.

We can reach that stage very soon. We begin with 'I am God's devotee' then reach the stage I am your devotee' (feel God before us) and should finally be able to say 'Oh God, I am you' It appears to be difficult but is not impossible. Even an insignificant ant can travel thousands of miles, but Garuda cannot move an inch if he doesn't make an attempt.

We need not doubt the success because God has already assured 'name bhaktha pranasyati' my devotee will never fall.'

Love only God you can understand God
You can see God and you can be one with God.

power of naama

========================
In Srimad Bhagavatam, the story of Ajamila has been narrated. All of you might
be aware of the story. What is the essence of the story is important. Let us
hear the essence from the mouth of the messengers of Bhagavan Vishnu
(Vishnudutas):-
"Ajamila has already atoned for all his sinful actions. Indeed he has atoned
not only for his sins performed in one life but for those performed in millions
of lifes(janmakotyamhasaamapi), for in a helpless condition he chanted the holy
name of Narayana(vivasah Hareh nama swastyayanam). (6.2.7). Even
previously, while eating and at other times, this Ajamila would call his
son, saying,"My dear Narayana, please come here. While calling the name of his
son, he nevertheless uttered the four syllables na-ra-ya-na(yada
Naraayanaa yeti
jagaada chatur aksharam)."(6.2.8). Simply by chanting the name of Naryana he
has sufficiently atoned for the sinful reactions of millions of lives. The
chanting of the holy name of Vishnu is the best process of atonement for a
thief of gold or other valuables, for a drunkard, for one who betrays afriend or
relative, for one who kilss a Brahmana, for one who indulges in sex with the wife
of his guru or another supeior. It is also the best method for atonement for
one who murders women, the king, or his father, for one who slaughters cows and
for all other sinful men. Simply by chanting the holy name of lord Vishnu, such
sinful persons may attract the attention of the Supreme Lord, who therefore
considers,"Because this man chanted My Holy name, My duty is to give him
protection.(Naamaovyaaharanam Vishnoh yatas tadvishaya matih)" (6.2.9 and
6.2.10). By following the vedic ritualistic ceremonies or undergoing atonement,
sinful men do not become as purified as by chanting once the holy name of Lord
Hari. Although ritualistic atonement may free one from sinful
reactions, it does
not awaken devotion, unlike the chanting of the Lord`s names, which reminds one
of the Lord`s fame, qualities, attributes, pastimes and paraphernalia (yatha
Harer naamapadaih udaahrutaih uttama sloka gunopalambhakam)(6.2.11). One who
wants liberation from the fruitive reactions of material activities, the
chanting of Hari`s name is recommended as the most perfect process of atonement
because such chanting eradicates the dirt from one`s heart completely, whereas
the ritualistic ceremonies prescribed in the scriptures are insuffucient to
cleanse the heart completely, since after atonement, one1s mind again runs
toward material activities.(6.2.12)
Friends, these are not my thoughts and advices. This is what Srimad Bhagavatam
says. Do you still doubt the power of the Divine Name? Pl. think.

Bhakti-part3 - By HH Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji

====================
A common man will find devotion to be the easiest of all the means to attain liberation. Performing Karmas, another means, involves the adherence to many procedures
and it is next to impossible for one to perform all the prescribed rites. Again, not all aspirants are qualified to tread the path of knowledge, the Jnana Marga.
Sadhana Chatushtayam or the fourfold qualification (comprising discrimination, dispassion, the hexad commencing with control of the mind, and intense
desire for liberation) is a sine qua non for the Jnana Marga. The easiest path which is open to all is the Bhakti Marga or the path of devotion. In response
to the query posed by Yudhishtira, "What is that Dharma which is the greatest among all Dharmas?", Bhishma said,

"To worship the Supreme Lord with devotion is the greatest among all Dharmas." This was the reply of Bhishma. In Sri Sankara's commentary on the above verse
of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, we find the following points. Performance of Karmas involves adherence to many Vedic injunctions, whereas worshipping the Lord
does not involve such injunctions. There might occur many lapses while performing Karmas.

The Sastras say that improper performance of Karmas is equal to their non-performance. However, this is not the case with the Bhakti Marga. Therefore,
Bhakti Marga is considered the simplest of the paths to liberation. All the limbs of our body are for the purpose of divine worship only.

Our tongue will attain purity only if it chants the divine names. It cannot become pure by talking about a thousand other issues. Our eyes get their purity
only by beholding the bewitching form of Ishwara in temples and not by other sights. Our hands are for the purpose of performing Puja to Ishwara. If they do
not perform worship, they are not to be called 'hands'. Likewise, our mind should ever contemplate on the lotus feet of Bhagavan. If all the above organs are
used by a person for the purpose of divine worship, he is indeed the most fortunate one.

Sri Sankara Bhagavatpadal wrote in one another hymn -

"O, Narayana, Compassionate One, Your feet are my refuge. Let my tongue always repeat these six words."

The six words are:

With verses like the one mentioned above, our ancients have shown us the essence of Bhakti.

Another interesting verse is:

This verse is said to have been recited by some hunters in a forest. The meaning of the verse is -

We wander in the forest
We bring money
We cross rivers
We know no fear
We can see that each of the quarters in the original verse contains the word "Rama". It is said that the hunters attained liberation even as they
unknowingly uttered the name 'Rama' four times. I mentioned this merely to highlight the potency of chanting the divine names. Therefore, we must
follow the footsteps of our ancestors and attain divine grace.
I wish that all people in our sacred nation believe in Ishwara. Let there be no atheists at all. Let all our people lead a devoted life and be the recipients
of the blessings of Ishwara. May Sri Chandramouleeswara and Sri Sharadambal fulfil this wish of Mine and bring prosperity to our nation.
I conclude this speech by mentally offering My salutations to My Guru.

Bhakti-Part-2- By HH Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji

====================

Some people are very keen on performing divine worship. They would be happy if they were allowed to remain in their worship for hours, without any disturbance. In contrast to this, there are some who are too impatient to sit for even ten minutes more in Puja than the usual duration. They ask their Purohit to chant the Sahasranamam fast. During the Puja, their minds think of the engagement they have to attend to after some time. They do not consider it important to focus their attention on Puja even for a brief while. On the other hand, a true devotee is oblivious of the passage of time whenever he sits for worship. Performing Puja is one form of devotion.

There are some devotees who do not feel satisfied even after they have prostrated many times before Bhagavan's idol. They keep doing Namaskarams, while others may feel, "Why do these people repeatedly prostrate before the idol?" Offering salutations too is a form of devotion.

There are some who find delight in always functioning as the servitors of the Lord. Such people would not be keen on performing any other activity. One example of this type of devotion is Sri Anjaneya. His only aim in life was to serve His master, Lord Ramachandra.

Some feel like associating with the Lord as a friend. Is this possible? Yes, it is possible. Arjuna had the opportunity to have Lord Krishna as his dear friend. After beholding the universal form of the Lord, Arjuna submitted to Him.

"O, Lord, I dealt with You thinking of You as my friend. Please pardon me for that sin." Lord Krishna blessed Arjuna with Sreyas or higher good.

There are some devotees who wish to offer all their possessions, including themselves, to the Lord. One example of this is Emperor Bali. Lord Vishnu, incarnated as Vamana, requested Bali to give Him a piece of land covered by three steps. When Bali casually agreed, Lord Vamana covered the entire universe with His first step. The second step covered Akasa. Immediately, Emperor Bali bowed down his head to enable the Lord to place His third step on it. He thereby totally surrendered himself to the Lord. This is Atma Nivedana or self-surrender. If a person does not consider anything as his but considers even himself as belonging to the Lord, it is called Atma Nivedana.

Hearing about the Lord, singing His praise, contemplating Him, serving His lotus feet, worshipping Him, prostrating before Him, serving Him as His slave, moving with Him as His friend and surrendering oneself to Him are the nine forms of devotion spoken of in the Sastras. We shall attain Sreyas even if we practise any one of the above types of devotion. As we have already seen, the examples for the various types of devotion are found in Puranas such as Bhagavata. It is our immeasurable good fortune that has enabled us to come across these descriptions.

If we conduct ourselves without being devoted to Ishwara in any manner, our life will serve no purpose whatsoever. All of us know that human birth is very rare to attain. Hence it is but imperative that we resort to a means like devotion to achieve the purpose of human life. Sri Sankara said -

All of us keep discussing various irrelevant issues. Have we ever thought what constitutes our goal? Have we ever planned as to how to achieve the purpose of our life? What efforts have we made to see that we are not reborn? Instead of contemplating about our salvation we take upon ourselves all the issues in the town and suffer. It is natural for everyone to care for one's own welfare before thinking about others. But in reality we do not seem to care about our own salvation and spend our time on mundane things. This is quite peculiar, indeed.

In this connection, I am reminded of one incident concerning My Parama Guru Sri Chandrasekhara Bharathi Mahaswamigal. He was a great Jivanmukta like Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra. He was always indrawn and engrossed in His own Self. Seldom did He come out for any external activity. The Math agent who was observing this spoke to the Guru at an opportune moment, "Now-a-days You never come out to see the devotees. The devotees come in thousands but return disappointed as they are not able to have Your Darshan. Hence in the interest of the Math, I request You to come out and ask the devotees about their welfare". To this, the Guru retorted, "Let Me first enquire as to who I am. Then I shall enquire about others". Such would be the reply of a person who is always established in Self-enquiry. It is needless to add here that we also must strive to uplift ourselves.

====================

The following is first in a three part series containing an English translation of an Anugraha Bhashanam delivered by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji
expounding the greatness of Devotion, at Coimbatore during his Vijaya Yatra to Tamil Nadu in 1988.

The best means to earn the grace of Ishwara is devotion. No other qualification is needed if one is devoted. That is why Sri Sankara said:

Even a hunter in the forest will rise to the level of being respected by all. How? By his devotion. All of us have heard of Kannappa Nayanar. Was he educated or was he orthodox? Was he affluent? No. He had no such qualifications. But his devotion towards the Lord had no parallel.

Kannappa Nayanar once beheld a Sivalinga in the forest. He could see that the Sivalinga had not been worshipped for long by anyone. He decided to do the worship himself. But he did not have any materials for worship. Seeing that the Sivalinga was fully covered by dust, Kannappa wanted to clean it. Lacking anything else to wipe it, he used his sandals for removing the dust from the Linga. There was a river which flowed nearby. Kannappa had no vessel to fetch water from the river for the sacred ablution. His mouth became the vessel to carry the water. He spat the water on the Linga and the Abhishekam was over. He thought for a moment as to what he should offer to the Lord as Naivedya. He decided to offer the meat of the animal which he had hunted just a little earlier. Ishwara happily accepted all these acts of His sincere devotee. Why? Because, Kannappa was extremely devoted. Though the story is not over, at this juncture, I wish to warn some people who might think that they can also do Puja in an unorthodox way as did Kannappa. They may also do so, provided they are capable of performing the most astonishing act that Kannappa subsequently indulged in. In that case, Ishwara may accept the worship of such people notwithstanding their heterodoxy.

After the worship was over, Kannappa noticed that tears of blood were flowing copiously from one eye of the Lord's image. Kannappa was shocked. Thinking that there was something wrong with one of His eyes, Kannappa forcefully plucked his own eye and fixed it on the defective eye of the Lord. Then he noticed that Bhagavan's other eye started bleeding. Kannappa immediately cut out his second eye and placed it on the second defective eye of Ishwara. Ishwara became immensely pleased with His devotee and appeared before him. Kannappa was instantaneously blessed with Moksha. This was the result of Kannappa's sincere devotion.

Devotion is something which is vital for everyone. The Sastras describe various types of devotion. Some find pleasure in listening to discourses relating to Bhagavan. Such people can be found wherever any religious discourse is conducted. This is one type of devotion. Some others desire to continuously chant the holy names of Bhagavan. Such persons do not care about their other activities. We learn from the Bhagavata Purana that the Gopika ladies were extremely devoted to Lord Krishna. A great poet described this in one of his verses.

The Gopikas eked out their living by selling dairy products. They used to house the vessels containing milk and curd in baskets and carry the baskets on their heads. They then entered street after street shouting, "Milk, curds,…", to attract the attention of their customers. One day, a Gopika set out to sell the products. Her mind was so engrossed in chanting the divine names of Lord Krishna that she was heard shouting, "Govinda, Damodara, Madhava…..", instead of "Milk, curds,….". The observers of this scene were surprised and thought that the girl had taken leave of her senses. However, the mind of that girl was thoroughly engrossed in the thought of her Lord. Indeed, if we happen to witness the behaviour of great Jnanis and great devotees, we too may get the feeling that they are insane. I am now reminded of an incident pertaining to the great soul Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra.

Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra was an exalted Jivanmukta. People around him who watched his behaviour thought that he was insane. They proceeded to his Guru and reported, "Your disciple has gone mad". To this, the Guru replied with grief,

"I am only wondering when I can also attain that state. Even though I call myself his Guru, I am yet to attain that state. He is a great soul." So exalted was the state of Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra in which he was absorbed. Likewise, the Gopika girl was totally engrossed in her mental chanting. Reciting the divine names is a form of devotion.

Sage Suka expounded the Bhagavata to King Parikshit. Suka's words never deviated from the main topic, viz., divine play of the Lord. There are some who always remember Ishwara even when they are involved in activities like talking, eating, writing and walking. Contemplation on Ishwara is also a form of devotion. Another form of devotion is serving the lotus feet of Lord. There are many devotees who are ever intent on serving Bhagavan.
