SREEMAD BHAGAVATGITA

Vasudhevasutham dhevam kamsachaaNooramardhanam

Dhevakeeparamaanandham krshNam vandhe jagathgurum

Salutations to Krishna, the son of Vasudheva, the destroyer of Kamsa and ChaaNoora, the source of joy for dhevaki and the great preceptor of mankind.

Lord Narayana incarnated as Krishna . as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki, not only to destroy the evil minded ones like Kamsa and Chanura and several others during His incarnation which ended only after the Mahabharatha war, but He showed the humanity the way to immortality through His discourse on the Gita. There are few other Gitas found in the puranas such as Ramagita, uddhavagita etc., dealing with the self knowledge but the Gita said by Krishna alone gets the name Bhagavatgita.

The Gita discourse was not an accidental happening impelled by the intention of Krishna to dispel the confusion in the mind of Arjuna because the confusion itself was the divine will of the Lord. In fact nothing happens by accident in this world, but only by the will of the Lord. The purpose of creating confusion in the mind of Arjuna by the deliberate stationing of the chariot in front of Bheeshma and Drona , was to give out the Gita to the world.

But why should the Lord choose the battle field to do so? It is the mercy of the Lord to uplift the humanity from the ills of samsara by bringing down the teachings of the Upanishads to the level of he common man. The Upanishads were taught by the rshis to those who were already aware of the transitory nature of the world and its pleasures and wished to have the divine wisdom. Hence the texts of these are in  a higher level which only those who have learned the Vedas and the sasthras  could understand. But Bhagavtgita is for all like the milk of the cow. The gopalanandhana,  the cowherd boy, who know well how to milk the cow,  has milked the cows called upanishads and gave out the milk to all.

Hence Bhagavatgita is the gospel of mankind. It is not only for the recluse but for the man  right in the middle of the world, which is the battle field, the kurukshethra.  The body is called kshethra , a field of activity and hence it is a kurukshethra, where the good and evil thoughts are always at war. The way to attain peace is to enlist the help of the Lord as Arjuna did, so that the Parthasarathy becomes 'naam paarttha sarathy,' the one whom we could see and the one who will lead our chariot , namely the mind and body.

It is a myth to think that the Gita is for old age. Help is needed for a man while he is fighting and not when he retires from the battle of life exhausted when both his mind and body become weak. Therefore the wisdom of Gita must be imparted while being young, so that the seed is sown, which will grow into a tree that gives fruits later.

Gita is essential in all walks of life. Whether one is a student, or an executive or a householder, he will be more efficient in his work if he has mastered the principles of Gita. It was said in the battle field to make Arjuna do his duty efficiently. A proper study of Gita can help a man throughout his life and also after.

Bhagavatgita is extolled in Mahabharatha as follows:

geethaa sugeethaa karthavyaa kimanyaih SaasthrasangrahaiH

yaa svayam padhmanaabhasya mukhapadhmaath vinisrthaa

Why do we need other sasthras when Bhagavtgita that sprang from the lotus- faced Lord Padmanabha  Himself?

sarvaSaasthramayee geethaa sarvadhevamayo hariH

sarvatheerThamayee gangaa sarvavedhamayo manuH

Gita is the epitome of all sasthras. Lord Hari is the abode of all devas. Ganges is the essence of all sacred waters and manusmrthi is the summary of the Vedas.

Geethaa gangaa cha gaayathree govindhethi hrdhi sThithe

Chathurgakaarasamyukthe punarjanma na vidhyathe

To one in whose heart these four `ga'kaaraas, namely, geetha, ganaga, gaayathri and Govindha are found, has no rebirth.

bhaarathaamrthasarvasyageethaayaah maThithasya cha

saaram udDhrthya krshNena arjunasya mukhe hutham

                                           (MAHABHARATHA- BHEESHMAPARVA)

Krishna churned the nectarine ocean of Mahabharatha, (which is panchamo vedaH) and took its essence and fed Arjuna as Bhagavath gita. In the Gitadhyanasloka of Bhagavatgita we have the same idea expressed differently and more poetically.

Sarvopanishdho gaavo dhogDhaa gopaalanandhanaH

paarTho vathsassuDheerbhokthaa dhugDham geethaamrtham mahath

All the Upanishads,( the essence of the Vedas) became the cows the one who milked them being the son of a cowherd, the calf was Partha and the milk, gitamruta and the consumers of the milk were sudheeh the people with right thinking. Who seek the wisdom of the scriptures .Arjuna was the calf to induce the cow to give the milk.

We shall enjoy the nectar of Gita drop by drop by taking the slokas one by one.

Bhagawath Gita in english verse

Courtesy: Sri.PR.Ramachander

The followers of Sanathana Dharma (otherwise called as Hindus) did not fall back on any single prophet or a single book as the basis of their religion. Right from the beginning, this religion (thought process) had a pluralistic view. On one hand the religion appeared to depend on rituals, prayers and rites and on the other hand it appeared to depend on a very democratic exchange of philosophic ideas between the teacher and the student as in the Upanishads, which were at the end of the Vedas. Not all Upanishads were discussion of philosophy and many of them did indeed discuss rituals and prayers to individual God. The sum total of the Hindu philosophic thought was individual research aided /under the direction of the Guru. The thought process slipped down to worship of individual gods and epic stories (Puranas) about the Gods were written down. The person who compiled and systematized all the religious knowledge contained in the initial Vedas as well as the stories of Individual Gods was a sage called Veda Vyasa.(Veda means "knowledge" and Vyasa means "essay writer") He compiled the information available on different Gods in to 18 epics besides compiling the four Vedas. The most encyclopedical epic of them all was called the Mahabharata. The main theme of this epic was the struggle for supremacy in India by the hundred sons of King Drutharashtra (called Kauravas) and the 5 sons of his younger brother Pandu called the Pandavas. At the end of struggle is a war between them. On the first day of the war, Arjuna the most valorous among the Pandava brothers appeared in the battle field driven by Lord Krishna who is his cousin, mentor and guide. But once Arjuna faced the prospect of killing his own cousins aided by his teachers, uncle and grandfather, he suddenly felt aghast and decided that, even starving to death would be a better option than killing them all. Lord Krishna then advises him (possibly the first recorded psychological counseling). Arjuna is not easily convinced. The next 700 stanzas of conversation between them in the battle field is Bhagawad Gita (The song of the Lord). Apart from simple advice to him, that Arjuna should fight, Lord Krishna summarizes the entire Hindu thought process on Sanathana Dharma in these 700 verses. By the blessing of Veda Vyasa all these was seen and heard by Sanjaya (collector and reporter) to Drutharashtra and were called the Bhagawad Gita. This was considered as a summary of Hindu religious thought and was revered by all Hindus. For a long time, this state of thought existed. Things changed with the writing of a commentary to this great work by Adhi Sankara, who proved that this great book provided support to his interpretation of Hindu philosophy of Advaitha (non dualism). The great Ramanuja who came out with a different philosophy called Visisthadvaitha (specialized non dualism) again wrote a commentary and claimed that Gita supported his system of philosophy. It was again followed by another interpretation to gather support to the philosophy of Dwaitha (dualism) propounded by sage Madhwa. After this period Bhagawad Gita became the most important religious book of Hindus .Several more commentaries and translations to Indian languages followed. The great commentators were by Abhinava Guptha, Nimbarka, Vallabha, and Gnaneswar in Marathi etc. The book became so popular in the Hindu psyche that, Hindus took oath on Bhagawad Gita like Christians took oath on Bible. In 1785 Charles Wilkins published an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita, which was the first time that a Sanskrit book had been translated directly into a European language. In 1808 passages from the Gita were part of the first direct translation of Sanskrit into German, appearing in a book through which Friedrich Schlegel, who became known as the founder of Indian philology in Germany. Edwin Arnold was the first one to publish a translation in to English verse in 1885. Many commentaries and translations followed with great regularity. Mahatma Gandhi who also wrote a commentary was so impressed by this great work that he wrote
"I find a solace in the Bhagavagītā that I miss even in the Sermon on the Mount. When disappointment stares me in the face and all alone I see not one ray of light, I go back to the Bhagavagītā. I find a verse here and a verse there and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming tragedies - and my life has been full of external tragedies - and if they have left no visible, no indelible scar on me, I owe it all to the teaching of Bhagawad Gita."

The first chapter of Gita details the back ground circumstances, which lead to this teaching. In the second chapter Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that he should fight because
It is his duty and that by killing a body he does not kill a soul and the highest form of action is when action is done without bothering about the fruits of such action. In this connection he also tells him that inaction is a great sin. Later at the request of Arjuna he explains about the difference between, deeds which take you to heaven but you are reborn later and that deed which once for all merges you with the lord. Some of the prominent approaches explained by him are:-

1. Doing action without bothering about fruits of such action.
2. Simple and steadfast devotion, surrendering all results to him.
3. Physical meditation of the highest order by which one becomes him.
4. The path through intelligent search of the God.
5. Simple and pure renunciation

During this discussion , he also shows him his supreme form, tells him , in which beings his presence will be felt more, the differences between the three states of Sathwa, Rajas and Thamas, the differences between the four varnas and so on. In short it is concise encyclopedia of all that for which Hinduism stands for.
Thousands of translations, interpretations and commentaries of the Bhagawad Gita in English as well as various other languages are already available. As mentioned before Edwin Arnold attempted to do a translation in English verse. Recently a similar effort was made by Sanderson Beck. The present translation is done in free English verse in as simple language as possible. I have tried to understand what has been written in Gita and wrote what I have understood, after reading various translations and commentaries, in a simple verse form. Not being a great scholar, I have not attempted for a commentary on what is the implication of each verse.
I dedicate my translation to the lay English reader interested in Hindu philosophy with a request to him to treat this translation as an appetizer. I am hoping that my effort would make him read several, more scholarly commentaries on Gita by very great souls and try to clear his various doubts. I am making this request because I have still not understood the treasure house of Gita and am doing exactly that.
Given below is what great people all over the world told about Bhagawad Gita from a collection published by Sri.M.P.Bhattathiri (www.tamilnation.org)
When I read the Bhagavad-Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous." Albert Einstein

"When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day." Mahatma Gandhi

"In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad-Gita, in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial." Henry David Thoreau

"The Bhagavad-Gita has a profound influence on the spirit of mankind by its devotion to God which is manifested by actions." Dr. Albert Schweitzer

"The Bhagavad-Gita is a true scripture of the human race a living creation rather than a book, with a new message for every age and a new meaning for every civilization." Sri Aurobindo

"The idea that man is like unto an inverted tree seems to have been current in by gone ages. The link with Vedic conceptions is provided by Plato in his Timaeus in which it states 'behold we are not an earthly but a heavenly plant.' This correlation can be discerned by what Krishna expresses in chapter 15 of Bhagavad-Gita." Carl Jung

"The Bhagavad-Gita deals essentially with the spiritual foundation of human existence. It is a call of action to meet the obligations and duties of life; yet keeping in view the spiritual nature and grander purpose of the universe." Prime Minister Nehru

"The marvel of the Bhagavad-Gita is its truly beautiful revelation of life's wisdom which enables philosophy to blossom into religion." Herman Hesse

"I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-Gita. It was the first of books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"In order to approach a creation as sublime as the Bhagavad-Gita with full understanding it is necessary to attune our soul to it." Rudolph Steiner

"From a clear knowledge of the Bhagavad-Gita all the goals of human existence become fulfilled. Bhagavad-Gita is the manifest quintessence of all the teachings of the Vedic scriptures." Adi Shankara

"The Bhagavad-Gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity." Aldous Huxley

"The Bhagavad-Gita was spoken by Lord Krishna to reveal the science of devotion to God which is the essence of all spiritual knowledge. The Supreme Lord Krishna's primary purpose for descending and incarnating is relieve the world of any demoniac and negative, undesirable influences that are opposed to spiritual development, yet simultaneously it is His incomparable intention to be perpetually within reach of all humanity." Ramanuja

The Bhagavad-Gita is not seperate from the Vaishnava philosophy and the Srimad Bhagavatam fully reveals the true import of this doctrine which is transmigation of the soul. On perusal of the first chapter of Bhagavad-Gita one may think that they are advised to engage in warfare. When the second chapter has been read it can be clearly understood that knowledge and the soul is the ultimate goal to be attained. On studying the third chapter it is apparent that acts of righteousness are also of high priority. If we continue and patiently take the time to complete the Bhagavad-Gita and try to ascertain the truth of its closing chapter we can see that the ultimate conclusion is to relinquish all the conceptualized ideas of religion which we possess and fully surrender directly unto the Supreme Lord. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati

"The Mahabharata has all the essential ingredients necessary to evolve and protect humanity and that within it the Bhagavad-Gita is the epitome of the Mahabharata just as ghee is the essence of milk and pollen is the essence of flowers." Madhvacarya
"Yoga has two different meanings - a general meaning and a technical meaning. The general meaning is the joining together or union of any two or more things. The technical meaning is "a state of stability and peace and the means or practices which lead to that state." The Bhagavad Gita uses the word with both meanings. Lord Krishna is a real Yogi who can maintain a peaceful mind in the midst of any crisis." Mata Amritanandamayi Devi

Uddhava Gita

Gita

courtesy: Sri.Srinivasan,palakkad
vasudeva para veda vasudeva para makhah

vasudeva para yoga vasudeva para kriyah

vasudeva param jnanam vasudeva param tapah

vasudeva paro dharmo vasudeva para gatih

Translation
The ultimate goal of all knowledge is the Supreme Lord Krishna known as Vasudeva. The purpose of all austerities is to please Vasudeva. The purpose of yoga is to realize Vasudeva. All benefits which we receive are awarded by Vasudeva solely and all penances are performed to learn Vasudeva only. Vasudeva is the Supreme knowledge. Righteousness in its most complete form is rendering loving devotional service unto Him. Vasudeva is the supreme goal and ultimate reality of all existence.

Modern men requires tranquility. If today his peace has been badly disturbed,he himself is to blame.Peace can be disturbed owing to several reasons. It is here that gita comes to rescue. This Gita is one of the outstanding religious classics of the world. It is the part and parcel of Mahabharatha the fith veda. The preceptor is sri.Krishna the god incarnate. An ideal comrade,A great statesman,an invisible warrior,a wise teacher and a Yogi Par excellence,he hormanizes in his life the various conflicting activities of life. This makes him the fittest person to preach such a wonderful Postulate classic.Arjuna the recipient of Teaching is a typical representative of humans liable to be upset or confused during periods of crisis.Hence his predicament, very much represents ours,in a similar circumstance and situation. The beauty and the sublimity of the work, its relevance to the problem of human life and its universal approach that helps us view the whole creation as one,may have prompted the scholars to undertake the task of translating it as a labour of love and admiration.Sri krishna has been venerated and worshipped as God himself, come down as human being to save mankind and redirect in the path of Dharma.
Bhagavat Gita has been taken in the Management studies too and it is rightly to be taught to children .In recent times a deliberate attempt is made to destabilise our federal structure and to balkanise it.The children the future pillars in society should be taught Gita and to make them as strong as possible.

Gita Chapter 2/46:
Yaavaanarttha udapaane sarvata: samplutodakeTaavaan sarveshu Vedeshu Braahmanasya vijaanata:
Eknath Easwaran puts it succinctly thus: "Just as a reservoir is little use when the whole countryside is flooded, scriptures are of little use to the illuminated man or woman who sees the Lord every where.
Another Seer opines: "To the one who has known the Supreme Brahman, all the Vedas (holy-books) are of only that much use as a reservoir is, when there is a flood everywhere!
The good Lord has placed this verse (46th) just preceding the 47th ( the quintessence of the Gitaamrutam as many view it?..... "karmanyevaadhikaaraste...etc...almost like saying "coming events cast their shadow")
Chap 6/30 ) where the good Lord Himself declares

" For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me!

Sarvo Upanishado Gavo   Dhoktha Gopala Nandhana:   Partho Vatsa:  Sudhir Bhoktha     Dhuktham Geethamrutham Mahathu.

The cow is all the upanishads   (Geetha is the simplified form of upanishads)   Bhagavan Krishna is the cowherd.  Arjuna is the calf.  Lord Krishna milks the cow after feeding the calf for a while    (which is the custom)   and distributes the milk to all of us which is amrutham.

Secret in Gita

courtesy: Sri.Prof.V.Krishnamurthy
http://www.krishnamurthys.com/profvk/gohitvip/8203.html

  • The first time He does so is at the beginning of the ninth chapter. It is in the seventh chapter that he changes the subject of discussion towards bhakti-yoga by saying: Now I will tell you how you can know Me as I am. He talks about the two prakRti's of His, one of which becomes the Universe and the other is the Life of all lives and about the four different ways of reaching Him. In the eighth chapter He elaborates the technicalities of remembering Him at the time of laying down this body. And now at the beginning of the ninth chapter he says: I will now tell you the Secret of Secrets. It is Knowledge both Theory and Application , the knowing of which will take you across the Ocean of Misery of samsAra:

idam to te guhya-tamam pravkshyAmy-anasUyave /

jnAnam vijnAna-sahitam yaj-jnAtvA mokshyase aSubhAt // ( 9 - 1)

Go to Secret of Secrets - 1

  • The second time Krishna mentions something as the secret of secrets is at the end of the fifteenth chapter when he concludes the chapter by sayingI have just given out the greatest secret to you; understand this, Arjuna, intelligently, and attain fulfillment:

iti guhyatamam Sastram idam-uktam mayA-nagha /

etad-buddhvA buddhimAn-syAt kRta-kRtyaSca bhArata // (15 - 20)

The secret referred to here is the theory of the three purushas, kshara-purusha, akshara-purusha and purushottama - the explanation of which is one of the distinguishing features of the gItA among all the scriptures of Hinduism.

Go to Secret of Secrets - 2

  • The third and last time something is called the secret of secrets by Krishna is at the very end of the eighteenth chapter when he is just about to give the famouscarama Sloka of the gItA where he tops his entire teaching by the concept of SaraNAgati. He has almost finished all that he has to say and he has concluded by saying: Thus have I told you what is more secretive (guhyAd-guhya-taramthan all the secrets of Knowledge; Analyse it carefully and in toto and do what you think is best.:

iti te jnAnam AkhyAtam guhyAd-guhyataram mayA /

vimRSyaitadaSesheNa yathecchasi tathA kuru // (18 - 63)

And then, as a final thought, almost as a postscript, He says: Now listen to My words. It is the innermost Secret of all. Because you are my favourite I am telling this to you as my confirmation of the Best that is good for you:

sarva-guhyatamam bhUyaH SRNu me paramam vacaH /

ishTo'si me dRDham-iti tato vakshyAmi te hitam // (18 -64)

immovables are pervaded . (l)
Salutations to that guru who opened the eyes of the one
blind due to the darkness (cover) of ignorance with the
needle (coated) with the ointment of knowledge . (2)
Salutations to that guru, who is the Creator, Sustainer,
and Destroyer and who indeed is the limitless Brahman . (3)
Salutations to that teacher who showed me the one to be
known, who permeates whatever that is movable and immovable,
sentient and insentient . (4)
Salutations to that teacher who showed me (by teaching)
the pervader of all three worlds comprising the sentient
and insentient . (5)
Salutations to that guru who is the sun to the lotus of
VedAnta and whose lotus feet are made radiant by the
jewel of all Shrutis (UpaniShads).  (The guru is
established in the vision of the Shruti and is the one
by whom the Shruti blossoms forth.) (6)
Salutations to that guru who is Awareness, changeless
(beyond time), who is peace, beyond space, pure (free
from rAga and dveSha) and who is beyond the manifest
and unmanifest (NAda, Bindu, etc.) (7)
Salutations to that guru who is rooted in knowledge
that is power, adorned with the garland of Truth and
who is the bestower of the joy of liberation . (8)
Salutations to that guru who by bestoying the knowledge
of the Self burns up the bondage created by accumulated
actions of innumerable births . (9)
Salutations to that guru; the perennial flow of wisdom
from the one rooted in the vision of the Shhruti dries
up totally the ocean of transmigration (saMsAra) and
reveals (teaches) the essence of all wealth (the fullness,
freedom from want). (10)
There is nothing superior to knowledge of truth; no
truth higher than the truth, and there is no purifying
austerity better than the truth; salutations to that
guru . (11)
Prostrations to that guru who is my Lord and who is
the Lord of the Universe, my teacher who is the teacher
of the Universe, who is the Self in me, and the Self
in all beings . (12)
Salutations to that guru who is the beginning and the
beginningless, who is the highest Deity and to whom
there is none superior .  (13)
Oh God of all Gods!  You alone are my mother, father,
kinsman, friend, the knowledge, and wealth .  You are
to me everything .  (14)

Bhagawad Gita

Shree Bhagwad Geeta
An old Farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson.
Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his  Bhagavat Geeta.
His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Bhagavat Geeta just like you but
I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget  as soon as I close the book.
What good does reading the Bhagavat Geeta do?"
The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied,  "Take this coal
basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of  water."
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back   to the house.
The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent
him back to  the river with the basket  to try again.
This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home.
Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was  impossible to carry water in a basket,
and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water;
I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out the door
to watch the boy try again.
At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that
even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak  out before he got back to the
house.
The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather
the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he   said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"
"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the  basket was different.
It had been transformed from a dirty old  coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.
"Son, that's what happens when you read the Bhagavat Geeta. You might not
understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be  changed,
inside and out. That is the work of Krishna in our lives."
