*A Crucial Lesson*
His Holiness is an adept at employing the right method of correcting an erring man.
Once, a man started a conversation with His Holiness. His very first sentence was a complaint about another man who was also well known to His Holiness. Immediately, His Holiness put forth a good aspect of the other person. The visitor then lodged a different complaint about the same person. The Saint recalled another good quality of him. The scene went on for quite some time with the visitor filing complaint after complaint and His Holiness countering them all! Tired, the visitor said, "What is this, Guruji? You seem to be stubborn in defending him." His Holiness replied with His characteristic sense of humour: "No, certainly not. I am defending Myself against sin." Confused, the man requested an explanation. His Holiness explained: "The scriptures warn that the one who listens to the criticism of others incurs sin. It has also been advised that recalling the goodness in others fetch Punyam. So, I was only trying to neutralize the sin thrust on Me, by acquiring Punyam!" Dumbstruck, the visitor tendered his apologies, but was worried that he was a sinner. The compassionate Guru said: "Were you too not listening to the good aspects of the other person? So, you too should have got your sins neutralised! Why worry yourself now? Hereafter, refrain from finding faults with others." The visitor accepted the sacred water from His Holiness and left, fully reformed!
