Lord-God

=======================

S.I. Radhakrishnan quotes a verse in his book *The Bhagavadgītā*, as a
footnote to his introductory essay, on page 64 of the G. Allen and Unwin,
1948 edition.

Radhakrishnan does not mention the source. Here is the verse as he shows it
in this book:

rujāsu nāthaḥ paramaṃ hi bheṣajyaṃ

tamaḥ pradīpo viṣameṣu saṃkramaḥ |

bhayeṣu rakṣā vyasaneṣu bandhavo

bhavaty agādhe viṣayāṃbhasi plavaḥ ||

रुजासु नाथः परमं हि भेषज्यं
तमः प्रदीपो विषमेषु संक्रमः |
भयेषु रक्षा व्यसनेषु बन्धवो
भवत्यगाधे विषयांभसि प्लवः ||
The meaning is clear enough:

*The Lord is the best remedy for any sickness, *
*a light in the darkness, a bridge across difficulties, *
*a protector against fears, a friend amidst troubles, *
*a boat to carry us across the deep sea of phenomenal existence.*

puṇyaṃ narāṇāṃ tamasi pradīpo
bhayeṣu rakṣā vyasaneṣu bandhuḥ |
rujāsu bhaiṣajyam anuttaraṃ ca
plavaṃ ca saṃsāra-mahāsamudre || kaṭhināvadāna 31.1 ||

*The purity of humankind (is) a light in darkness, *
*protector in fears, friend in difficulties, *
*remedy in illness, and above all, *
*a boat (for crossing over) the great ocean of samsara.*

Story of Kandu Maharishi

Kandu

There was a sage named Kandu. He had a hermitage on the banks of the Goutami Ganga. The ashrama was a beautiful place and Kandu performed very difficult tapasya there. In the summer Kandu meditated in the hot sun, in the monsoon he meditated on the wet ground, and in the winter he meditated dressed in wet clothing.

Indra got scared as a result of all this tapasya. He thought that the sage Kandu might want to become Indra, the king of the gods. He therefore called an apsara named Pramlocha and told her, Go and disturb Kandu's tapasya.

Pramlocha went to the hermitage and began to sing there in a beautiful voice. This disturbed Kandu and he discovered a beautiful woman wandering around in his ashrama.

Who are you? Kandu asked the woman.

I have come here to pluck flowers, replied Pramlocha, I am your servant, I will do whatever you wish me to.

Kandu had fallen in love with Pramlocha and he married her. He forgot all about his tapasya and Indra haved a sigh of relief. Years passed. Pramlocha wished to return to heaven but Kandu would not let her.

After years and years had passed, Kandu came out of his hut, looking rather distracted. It was then evening and Kandu was obviously going somewhere.

Where are you going? pramlocha asked.

What a stupid question! exclaimed Kandu. Can't you see that it is now evening? I have got to go and observe the evening rites. The day has passed.

What day?, asked Pramlocha. Several days have passed and several evenings have come and gone.

No, you came here this morning, said Kandu. I brought you to my hut and it is now evening. I don't understand what you are trying to say. Explain yourself.

It is true that I came here in the morning. Answered Pramlocha. But that was a morning which dawned many years ago. Hundreds of years have passed since tha tday.

How many years? asked Kandu. When did you come here?

Sixteen hundred years, six months and three days ago, replied Pramlocha.

Are you sure? asked Kandu. It seems like a single day to me.

I am sure, said Pramlocha. I dare not to lie to you.

You have dislodged me from my tapasaya, responded Kandu. But I will not curse you, since you have been my wife. Go back to heaven. I have to atone for my sins.

The sage Kandu went to Purushottama kshetra and performed penance for his sins. He was blessed by Vishnu.

Kandu and Pramlocha had a daughter named Marisha.

The Brahma Purana also describes several other tirthas. Most of these are on the banks of the river Goutami Ganga. This is now identified as the river Godavari

Story of Ekalavya

courtesy: Sri.Bryan Hill
=================

Hare srinivasa

  • Ekalavya is known for the Guru bhakti in the popular history,
  • His story has been celebrated as cruelty on part of Guru Dronacharya
  • Also Ekalavya has been portrayed as that of being a victim to the partiality of Acharya Drona ,for his love towards Arjun.
  • Ekalavya is supposed to have learnt everything all by himself .
  • Ekalvya is portrayed as one from lower caste and untouchable.
  • Ekalavya is seen as another victim of Pandav favoritism ,just like Karna
  • Incidently Ekalavya is brother-in law of Karna .

Contrary to the above popular belief let me give you the real facts to uncover the myth  about EKALAVYA .

Before venturing into the character named Ekalavya ,it is important to know the greatness of Acharya Drona .

  • Dronacharya was a man without desires ,he used to live on shillonch vrutti [ that which prohibits one to ask anything from anyone ]
  • He was taught astra Vidya By Lord Parshurama [ not different from Krishna] .
  • He was very devoted to Lord and his Guru .
  • He was true to his profession of teaching and to his employers and kept his words always.
Arjuna had promised to caryy his mission [ to conquer Drupad] ,and thus HE had promised Arjun to make him the greatest Archer .
  • Archery consists of plain skill of holding bow and relieving arrows + knowledge of astras [missiles]
  • Without knowledge  of missiles plain archery is of limited use.
  • Astras involve usage of vedic techniques .[these can be learnt only from Guru ]
Drona was divine personality , his grace would make anyone a great .

Now let us move to Ekalavya ,

  • Ekalavya was not a lower caste , He was nishada prince [ a son of nishad king].
  • Nishada is a caste sprung from the intermixing of bramhins and sudras[ parasava + kshatra] . These are tribes that dwell in forests and are adept in various skills from hunting to boating . They form an important part of forest life and governance in general , as they are cheitains overwhich a kingdom stands.
  • Ekalavya and his father etc were in the service of Kashi raja .
Ekalavya went to Drona to learn Vidya Why?
  • Ekalavya had a inherent hate towards Lord Krishna .
  • Ekalavya was the incarnation of demon MAnimanta .
  • He had gone into deep forest to learn astras from Pisachas .[ Paisaach vidya and paisaach astras]
  • He had used them against Krishna but could not succeed ,thus he understood that he should acquire Deva astras .
  • Only Guru Drona could impart such Knowledge .
  • Thus he Approached Drona
  • Why did Drona reject Ekalavya ?
    • Drona knew he was inherently a hater of Lord Srikrishna [ His Guru not diffrent from Parashurama]
    • Entertaining him would be to go against his Guru .
    • Secondly By then Guru Drona was in the service of teaching Princes of Hastinapur.
    • School where Princes are taught ordinary citizens are not allowed to learn by their side.
    • Only Royals  and bramhins in Royal service  could enroll themselves in such schools.
    • This is the reason why even Karna was rejected .
    • Those were the days when Governance itself was beased on a caste .
    • Hence an outcaste could not have dared to go to a bramhin [ A Royal servicemenin the service of Monarch of the world] to teach him if it were against rules .So Ekalavya was not an
outcaste . neither a low born because astra vidya could be taught to only higher caste warriors. Disappointed Ekalavya went to the forest , prepared a IDOL of Dronachary and started practising the archery .
  • This gave him profound mastery in archery .
  • This is not the greatness of Ekalavya but greatness of Dronacharya himself ,that even worshipping his idol too gave extraordinary brilliance in the vidya. If this was not so , then Ekalavya could have practised all by himself without the idol . But He knew the greatness of Drona and thus resorted to this form of Practise.
  • This shows extreme determination of Ekalvya to gain the vidya [ determination to kill Krishna] .
  • But all daitya [rakshasas ,demons] are known to have done tapasya earlier and gained boons from Shiva and others , this is just another example of Ekalavya doing tapasya to Dronacharya.
Dronacharya asked his right thumb
  • Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya Adhyaya 15 - shlokaas 61, 62, 63
  • Ekalavya shooted "Shabdavedi" arrow at a dog which was barking, from a long distance, without injuring the dog.  The dog went near Paandavaas.     On seeing the dog, both Pandavaas - Kauravaas were searching for the one who has shooted at the dog.    There they saw Ekalavya.
  • This Ekalavya had earlier joined Jarasandha in his fight with Krishna.  He had learnt some astra vidye from Pishachees.  He wanted to learn divyastra from Drona, which Drona had rejected.  So, Ekalavya had created an idol of Dronacharya with mud and was worshipping Dronacharya with the desire of learning Divyastra.
  • Arjuna told Drona that "your words to me went wrong".  Drona had told Arjuna in Astra Kaushala vidya no one can be more stronger than Arjuna.  Now, with Ekalavya using Shabdavedi, which Arjuna had not learnt, this has become negative.
  • Here Acharya Madhwa clarifies that "Shabdavedi Astra Vidya which was known to Ekalavya not known to Arjuna is wrong".  Actually Arjuna knows the Shabdavedi astra vidya.   Arjuna had learnt Shabdavedi astravidya of his own (self learning).
  • He had learnt throwing shabdavedi arrow in the dark itself and was an expert in the use of Shabdavedi.
  • As such, both Ekalavya and Arjuna were known of Shabdavedi use.   But were equal in their capacity of using that arrow.  As such, it does not mean that Arjuna was not known of Ekalavya's vidya. When in the forst ,royal dog was stopped from barking by Ekalavya [without hurting the dog , ekalavya had gagged the dog with the arrows]
  • This created a concern in the mind of Arjun and asked whether Drona was true to his words.
  • Drona to keep his words and to prevent Ekalavya from going against his guru [ Lord] and
principles , asked for his right Thumb as Gurudakshina .
  • Ekalavya cut off his thumb
    • because , he knew refusing Gurudaksina would render his Vidya useless [ just as Karna had suffered] thus it is better to give up the thumb rather than risking curse.
    • Dronacharya was divine from the fact that he restored The THUMB equivalent to Arjun in plain archery and less stiff when using astras .
    • This way Acharya Drona fulfilled his words and also kept his duty .
  • Later on th mount Raivat Dronacharya taught Astra Vidyas to Ekalavya .
  • Equipped with the Astra Vidya ,

    • Ekalavya along with Paundraka Vaasudeva [ another son of Vasudev from the diti ] attacked Dwaraka in the night .
    • Krishna had gone to Kailash to beget a son .
    • Satyaki and Balaraam alongwith the army fought with the Ekalavya and Paundraka Vaasudeva
their army with lamps. Ekalavya and others extinguished all the lamps . So Balaraam went to back to bring additional Lamps Satyaki kept at bay both Ekalvya and Paundraka . Just then Krishna returned , he cut all the weapons of Ekalavya and Paundraka and destroyed their chariots. Balaraam then happy at the return of Krishna , with full vigour raised his musal and attacked Ekalavya . Ekalvya afraid of furious Balraam , started running away . HE ran and fell in the ocean . Balaram stood near the banks , but ekalavya fearing and assuming Balraam is chasing , swam 80 yojanas and reached an island . there he looked back and seeing Balraam at the banks relieved a sigh . Then Ekalavya undervent tapasya to Shiva to get the boon of being defeatless . ever victorious . Shiva granted him the boon . Now with much more pride and strength Ekalavya attacked Krishna again and used all the astras given by Drona and Shiva but Krishna cut all the astras and finally with his Sudarshan cut his head off .

Story of Ekalavya is the portrayal of greatness of Dronacharya as how when in dilemma a man shouldcut his head off .

Story of Ekalavya is the portrayal of greatness of Dronacharya as how when in dilemma a man should act and yet uphold the Dharma ,and duty towards society , king , Guru and pupils and finally towards GOD .

Gurubhakti is not in showing histrionics before GURU , Guru bhakti is in total surrender to teacher , obeying his everyword , upholding his every value and treading the path shown by him. Ekalavya only showed histrionics and acted contrarily to his guru's views , loyalties and culture and principles. This is GURU DROHA , thus  finally he achieved nothing and met with death at a young age at the hands of Lord SRIKRISHNA .

Thirumoola nayanar

Courtesy; Sri.Lakshmi narayanan subramanian
=================================
Dear all,
Sivaayanamaha
As before we are now able to think a GreatSaintNayanamaar by name
thirumUla n^AyanAr
He had be4en considere to have lived on this globe extending to a tenure of
3000years,His extraordinary spritual Qualification brought him to show the
mankind with 3000 songs of 4 lines each during his earthily life. Each of such
song narrated an yearlong experience had in this world leading to give uslots of
thoughts and a trasparent meaning.

His writing is adorned as Paththaam THirumurai called as Thirumandiram itself.
In the Growing-moon crowned Lord's mount kayilai being the lead of that very
ancient abode of Lord showing the righteous path to the vishNu, braHma, indra
and others is the n^an^dhi. One of his disciples, vEdhAs learnt sage who
attained the eight great achievements beginning from aNimA wanted to visit and
stay with sage agasthyar at the podhikai mountains in thamiz land. Worshiping
the Lord at kEdhAr the sage praised the pashupati at Nepal. He reached the banks
of the holy river ga.nga which as a small stream falls from His vast matted Hair
glittering like the lightning. Bathing in the river he saluted the Lord's
avimuththam abode and proceeded towards the South. Saluting the shrishailam of
sha.nkara, he reached thirukkALaththi. Praising the enchanting Everlasting Lord
at thirukkALaththi entered His dancing field Alavanam and bowed down to His
raised foot. He came to kAnychi worshipping Lord EkAmbaranAthar. Involving in
discussions with the yOga munis of that city he left in his journey and bowed
down to the Black-throated Mercy at thiruvadhikai. He arrived in the Master of
Dance's thillai. With his heart brimming with love he saw the dance of the
Golden Beauty that acts making the matters to exist. Staying and saluting the
Lord there for some time he came to the banks of river kAviri.

Bathing in the chill refreshing water of river kAviri he went into the Lord's
abode AvaduthuRai. The yOgi praised in undiminishing love the Lord of pashus
there. In spite of a feeling of not leaving that holy place emerging strongly he
went out of the town continuing his journey towards podhikai. But in a short
distance he saw the cows crying on the Cauvery bank. mUlan a herdsman who used
to take care of the cows of the village chAththanUr died when he brought the
cowherds for grazing on the banks of the river. The cows out of their affection
for their herdsman went around his body smelling him, licking him and crying.
The yOgi who told the world that Love is Lord shiva felt he would remove their
suffering by His grace. Realizing that only if mUlan came alive the cows would
get consoled, he, a splendid sidhdha fortified his body and introduced his soul
into the body of the herdsman through air. He rose as thirumUlar. The cows
relieved of their gloom licked him in joy, went around happily grazing on the
riverbanks. The merciful n^AyanAr safeguarded them till they grazed enough and
returned after drinking water from the river. As the sun red in the heat went to
have a dip in the ocean the cows thinking of their calves started walking back
towards the village. The sage who showed a supreme path to the world calmly
followed them to chAththanUr.

He waited till all the cows entered their respective houses. Wife of the
herdsman mUlan saw him delaying to enter the house. Anxiously she went to touch
him, but he refused saying there was no relation between them and went into a
common mutt. The lady who had no offspring or relatives could not sleep
throughout the night. She cried and lamented to the elderly people of the town
about his new behavior. Those people of well analyzing capacity told the girl
that he was neither mad nor had he any other association. He staying beyond the
skewedness of mind, in the crystal clear shivayOga, in the height of glory
unmeasurable for any human would not fit into relationship she had, they advised
her. The sage thirumUla n^AyanAr in such a wonderful state got up and returned
the way he came following the cowherd. The sage could not find the body he had
kept it safe. He realized through his vision of spiritual wisdom that it was
God's grace that way in order to give in thamiz through his words the supreme
AgamAs that the Cool-matted haired Lord gave for this world to follow and get
enlightened. He explained to the relatives who continued behind him the
non-continuation of the bonds. After they all left thinking the holy feet of the
Lord of Bull flag n^AyanAr went with great enthusiasm to salute the Supreme at
thiruvAvaduthuRai. Sitting under the shade of arachu tree in ultimate shivayOgam
he gave the holy thiruman^dhiram (1) a marvelous medicine for the illness of
incarnation. Starting from 'onRavan thAnE' he completed the thamiz garland of
three thousand flowers for the Lord who charmingly wears the horn of the boar.
Staying on this earth for those three thousand years, a blessed time for the
upbringing of humankind he reached in non-separation the holy feet of the
Almighty. Let the coveted wisdom of shiva yOga of thirumUla n^AyanAr stay in the
mind.

GOD!

YOU ME & GOD

Swami Chinmayananda

"Swamiji, I don't believe in God".

It was a young man, modern, tight pants, tobacco pipe stuck at waist, trim thin moustache. He spoke English with an Americanized drawl, and was evidently one of our university products, with higher education abroad. Sophisticated, to the points of his pointed toes.

Swamiji beamed. "Excellent!" With a broad welcoming smile, nodding his head slowly, Swamiji continued: "That's fine. I like you. You are the man I have been wanting to meet. I like your outspokenness. You are intelligent and you think independently. You have the courage to speak out your conviction, straight from the shoulder, as they say. Now come, WHAT KIND of GOD is it, that you don't believe in?"

The young man, who had made his statement about his non-believing, with a little hesitation, probably at his own audacity at denying GOD before a God-man, was pleasantly surprised at Swamiji's cordial tone and benign smile, and, feeling encouraged, went on:

"This God, who sits above the clouds, and judges men, and dispenses favours and punishments by remote-control, at his own sweet will, don't you think Swamiji, it is all hocus pocus?"

Swamiji laughed. "Shake hands, young man. I am entirely with you. Now, we are two, together. I too, don't believe in THAT KIND OF GOD. But........hmm, did you have breakfast before coming?"

"Yes, Swamiji."

"Well, What did you have for breakfast?"

"The usual things, porridge, toast, scrambled eggs, coffee...."

"Eggs. That's nice. Eggs! Now, where did the eggs come from Ram, that's your name isn't it?"

Ram, with his brows raised, feeling that Swamiji was leading up to something, said: " I don't exactly know, probably one of those new poultry farms near Poona".

Swamiji: "I don't mean that. How are eggs made? Do they grow in fields, or are they made in factories?"

"Simple. I think you are trying to pull my legs, but all the same I'll answer you. Hens, of course. Hens lay eggs, you know!" Ram said with an air of flippancy.

Nodding his head, up and down, thoughtfully, Swamiji continued: " I see, I see, so the eggs come from hens. Now where do the hens come from?"

Ram, an intelligent man, could see the trap he was being led into. He started saying: "Of course from.....". Then wide eyed, looked at Swamiji silently.

Swamiji smiled: "So, eggs come from hens, hens come from eggs, which again come from other hens, and so on, ad-infinitum. Can you, Ram, say with any certainty, which was the first cause? Egg or hen? How and why?

Swamiji, now addressing all the devotees present, went on: "You see, God is not just a person or individual, sitting in a palace above the clouds, dispensing favours. It stands to reason that every effect must have had a cause prior to it. The watch that you are wearing did not make itself. Your breakfast did not cook itself. There was a cause, in each case. The cause must have emerged from a previous cause. GOD is now the first cause. The sole cause. The UNCAUSED CAUSE. There was no cause before Him. He is the oldest, the most ancient, He was before TIME. The Sanaatanah, the Puraanah. This `Causation hunting' is the favourite pastime of the evolving human intellect -- trying to trace everything to its ultimate origin. That which is beyond the point, at which the intellect gets stalled, is G-O-D. The intellect cannot come to a conclusion as to the ultimate cause as in the age - old example of the hen and the egg. `Thus far -- not farther' is the limitation of the capacity of the human intellect."

Ram was flushed with excitement. He was thrilled. In a faltering voice he asked " There does seem to be something in what you say, Swamiji. Am I to understand that THAT is God?"

"That, which you now speak of as GOD, my boy, the muslim calls Allah; the christian refers to as "My father in Heaven"; the Parsee as Ahura Mazda. These are a few of the different ways in which HE or IT is referred to, but all are referring to the SAME SUPREME PRINCIPLE. The cause behind all causes. The source of all that was, now is, and ever will be. The Vedas refer to it as BRAHMAN, the Absolute, the infinite. THE TRUTH IS ONE. THE WISE SPEAK OF IT VARIOUSLY."

" But, Swamiji, the description does not seem to be complete. Is that all that God is? How can one come to know Him?"

"Now, you are really getting somewhere. I have not `described' God. He cannot be described. To define is Him is to defile Him. What I pointed out only constitutes one way, one manner, of approaching the Truth. It is just one aspect. Now, Your second question asks `How can one come to know Him?'

`Know him!' He cannot be `known' as you know this table or this chair or your wife or your pipe. He is not an object of the intellect. He is the VERY SUBJECT. Have you heard of the great disciple of the Kenopanishad who approached the Master and enquired :"Revered Sir, What is IT, directed by which the mind cognizes objects, the eyes see, the ears hear and so on?' The master cryptically answered :"It is the eye of the eye; the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind'. In fact It is the VERY Subject that enables the eyes to see, the ear to hear etc. It is not an object of the senses or the Mind or the Intellect. Hence, to answer your question, I have to tell you that you cannot make God an object of Knowledge.

An example will elucidate the idea. You are walking along a dark country road at night, occasionally illuminating your path with the aid of a battery torch; you want to know how the torch gives light; you unscrew the torch, you will not be able to see the battery cells, as the bulb will not emit light unless powered by the battery of cells. Similarly, the eyes, the ears, the mind and the intellect, all of which get their own power to function from the LIFE PRINCIPLE, cannot understand IT as an object. God is thus conceived of as the life principle, in every one."

The audience sat spell bound listening to Swamiji, exposition of a difficult vedantic truth in easy lucid style.

"Then Swamiji, you say that God or Truth is something abstract, that cannot be seen or heard or touched -- or even thought of. Am I right?"

" You are very much right. In fact, God is all this and much more. The Bhagawad Geeta says: `Weapons cleave It not; fire burns It not; water wets It not; wind dries It not. This 'Self' cannot be cut, nor burnt nor wetted nor dried.' It is not material; It is not matter, understand."

"Why did you `Self'?"

"The Supreme, Life Principle, is also the SELF in you, in me and in everybody. It is the innermost core of your personality. The popular misconception is that `man is a body, with a soul'. That it is not correct. The Truth is that `Man is THE SOUL, in a body'. He is eternal. The role of the body is likened to a worn out garment that is discarded by the wearer at his will."

Now, the other members of the audience who had been listening with awe and reverence, took the oppurtunity to clear their doubts.

"Swamiji, if God cannot be seen or thought of, is an abstraction, is there any significance to idol worship?"

"Of course there is a lot. When your dear son is in America, and you cannot see him whenever you want, do you or do you not get solace by looking at his photograph? You do know that the photo IS NOT YOUR SON, but only a piece of paper with various tones of grey, but it reminds you of your beloved boy and his great love for you. So also the idols in temples are to remind the devotees of the ideal, the Supreme. Since the human mind cannot conceive of a formless Supreme, God is conceived of in the form as represented by an idol. To the earnest devotee, the idol appears as a living embodiment of his Lord, and he goes into ecstasy at its sight. It is, however, necessary to remember that the idol is NOT God, but represents God."

" Why is it, Swamiji, that as in Christianity or Islam, a particular day of the week is not earmarked in Hinduism for temple worship?"

At this question, Swamiji drrew himself up, straightened and roared at the top of His voice; " HINDUISM IS NOT A PART TIME RELIGION." He then explained at length that aspiration to associate with divinity cannot be restricted to any particular time." Have you heard of the school boy who said that `the earth is round on Sundays and flat on other days'? So also, a man cannot be made to be divine on Sundays and devilish on all other days. (Maybe, most of us are that way!)

So constant practice, frequent association with the good etc., are needed. The temple visits and worship should elevate the mind of the seeker and help him to keep his mind in a higher plane. He should also take other steps to continue the purification of the mind at all times of the day, at home, in the office, at the market place."

"What is a pure mind, Swamiji?"

"A pure mind is one which is calm, free from agitations. Agitations are caused mainly by our likes and dislikes and desires. Desires spell disaster, fulfilled or frustrated. Mahatma Gnadhi was very fond of the `Sthitha Pragna' portion of the second chapter of the Bhagawad Geeta, in which the causes and consequences of desire are most graphically described.

It is the ladder of fall: "When a man thinks of objects, attachments for them arises; from attachment, desire is born; from desire (unfulfilled) arises anger; from anger comes delusion; from delusion loss of memory, the destruction of discrimination; from destruction of discrimination he perishes."

Swamiji added: " The Lord also points out then the three great entrances to hell are lust, anger and greed."

One in the audience asked: "I have read a good deal Swamiji, I also have convictions. Yet, to put these values in practice is my problem."

Swamiji :"This was exactly Arjuna's problem. The Lord advised him, Recognise your real enemies. They are desire and anger, born of passionate nature, all devouring and sinful'. Knowing your enemies will enable you to destroy them. Knowing your weaknesses, you will make efforts to discard them. Once you locate a dead rat in your wardrobe, that was emitting foul odour, you will promptly pick it up by the tail and throw it as far away as possible."

"Our sastras have laid down a clearcut procedure. The three - fold practice consists of Sravana, Manana and Nidhidhyasana - Hearing is not in one-ear-out-the other, `It is attentive listening to discourses on our great scriptures (including reading them), contemplating on the ideas contained therein, and lastly meditation.

Many people come and tell me that they have gone through the Geeta many times. I tell them `Let the Geeta go through you once atleast. It will do you more good.'

Not just hearing or reading but absorption of the great ideas contained therein, assimilating them, and living those values will alone produce a radiance in the life of an individual. Proper understanding, and correct attitudes are important. For example, we often meet the allegation that Hinduism is an `out-of-the world religion' meant only for the recluse. The spirit of Hinduism is not understood by those who say this. Wealth is not taboo for the seeker, but the constant craving for wealth IS. Property is not prohibited, but one is enjoined to use it in the service of society.

The vedantic concept of renunciation has nothing to do with have or have-not, in a physical sense; it means the attitude of non-attachment. The classical example of our ancient lore is that of Emperor Janaka, living in the luxury of a palace, but still considered such a great saint and sage that great aspirants went to him for guidance.

If you ask me `how to start', my answer is `Just start'. when? Now !

Today is the best day. A better day will not come.

The greatest master who lived and worked for the cause of religion in India, Adi Sankara, has laid down the prescription:

"Bhagawad Geeta and Vishnu Sahasranama are to be chanted; always the form of the Lord of Lakshmi is to be meditated upon. The mind is to be led towards the company of the good. wealth is to be shared with the needy".

Now, many people wait for retirement to take to religion. They will never take to it, because they will have new problems in the way.

Hari om! Hari Om!! Hari Om!

Who is GOD? Where is GOD?

Rev. Thirumuruga Krubananda Variyaar in his preface to his Tamil Book called Thiruvarudselvar mentioned a story which I want to give below very precise.

A King had asked three questions which a teen aged girl had answered to the satisfaction of the King and all others.

The questions are (1) Where is God? (2) In which direction is God looking? (3) What is God doing? The teen aged girl asked for the following articles and they were supplied. The articles were:-
(1) a table. (2) a glass of water (3) few ounzes of sugar (4) a spoon (6) a candle (7) a box of matches.

To answer the first question, viz: Where is God? she kept the glass of water on the table for everybody to see and then she showed the sugar to all. Then she put the entire sugar in the water in the glass and she stirred the water well with the spoon till the entire sugar was no more seen. She then asked the King where is the sugar? The King replied it is dissolved in the water. The girl said this is the reply to your first question. Just like the sugar which is not seen but it is dissolved in the water, God cannot be seen but He is omnipresent; He dwells in all objects and living beings in all worlds. The King was entirely satisfied with that answer.

For the second question - viz: In which direction is God looking? the girl put the candle to stand erect on the table and she took the box of matches in her hand. Then she asked the King to ask his servants to shut off all lights and make the place dark. This was done. Then the girl struck one stick of the box of matches and lit the candle. The candle light was burning. She asked the King, Can your Magesty the King say in which direction is the light from the candle going. The King said the light is going in all directions. The girl said that is the answer to your second question. God's vision is in all directions on all things in world.

For the third question - viz: what is God doing? the girl said she can answer that question only if the King will get down from the throne, allow her (the girl herself) to be seated on the throne and exercise all powers of the King. This was done. The girl sat in the throne and told the ex-king, while being a King you should set an example to the ordinary people of the country. But you raised silly questions viz., (1) Where is God? (2) In which direction is God looking? (3) What is God doing? For this, you will be punished. Then she called the Army commander and asked him to handcuff the ex-king. The Army commander did this. Then she told the Army Commander, you have obeyed the orders given by me from the throne and for this I will reward you. I will make you one Minister of this kingdom. After this she got down from the throne and asked the ex-king to sit in the throne. Then she said this is the answer to your third question, viz: What is God doing?
The God conducts the entire world, making those who do sins to suffer punishments and thereby become persons who do good deeds, making persons who do good deeds to be blessed and rewarded and so on and so forth. The King was satisfied with the answers and felt ashamed of having raised the questions. Thereafter he conducted himself properly and ruled his kingdom very well.
