He was my Carnatic music guru. He was a friend, philosopher & guide and treated me like his own son. He was full of wits & humour, famous for Maharajapuram wits. A very good critic & will find the exact fault where there is further scope of improvement. He was a regular audition judge at Air Tiruchirapalli being an A Grade artist apart from his regular programmes at Air Puducherry for light music programmes.
His tukadas are unique & carefully tuned so as to get the public recognition.
He was very straight forward in his dealings & damn punctual for all the cutcheris booked by the individual. He will do fullest justice to the every penny he was paid for.
He had lot of friends at Air Trichy including Mridangam Rangarajan, fiddle TV Ramanujacharlu, Vasantha, Nagai Muralidharan & many more.
He was an ardent devotee of Saint Thyagaraja & will often spend tears on hearing his name itself. Saint thyagarja was more than his Kuladeivam, & he learnt this bhakti from his periyappa Maharajapuram Viswantha Iyer. He learnt carnatic music under the direct tutelage of MVI staying at maharajapuram through out performing clothes washing & other sishrooshas for his guru.
Going to Thiruvaiyaru every year for bahula pancami was the only vrata he was observing for more than 75 years in succession. He will go 4 days in advance & stay there till pancami and return.
I was fortunate to have sung at Thiruvaiyaru along with him on the same dais for vocal support at his age of 78, perhaps the only disciple to have sung with him at Thiruvaiyaru.
He knew more than 400 tyagaraja kritis by heart and would chisel each kriti with utmost care carrying the torch of Umayalpuram tradition.
He
He was a regular performer at Srirangam Goratha moolai margazhi utsavam & at Ayyampettai tyagaraja utsavam organsied by Valajapettai Venkataramana bhagavata mandali.
He worked as the prinicipal of Saraswati Vidyalayam at BHEL Trichy for more than 22 years.
He took tuitions at Pondy Judge Vasanta & his husband Srinivasan was his best friend.
My annan Santhanam comes to Maharajapuram very less & I am the only who lives true to the name of Maharajapuram staying in Maharajapuram., He owned a few acres of land and was doing cultivation & was fondly called as Maharajapuram Mirazdar. Ettayapuram Narasimhan at AIR Puduchery was his best friend & both will get into a quarrel when mohanam was sung. MKN will tell come I will take you to MVI because it was he who taught me this mohanam. That will pacify narasimhan.
he wont accept anybody as his disciple & would put him/her through an audition test.
He lived a very very simple & humble life along with his wife in BHEL Township Trichy. He was never greedy & will say what ever God has given is enough for me.
Once he lost a 50 rs note & when maami complained with fear what MKN will say...
MKN told, Viduree, uzhaichu sampaadicha panam, enge poyidaporatu...? ( the money I earned through my hardwork will not go waste) and just after few hours it was found. He told similar would have been my reaction if the amount lost was one lac, Ramesh ... remember one thing whatever earned through hardwork can never go waste.
He observed mouna vrata on every Thursday so as to give the vocal chords a rest. That was his secret of maintaining the shruti upto the age of 83 years after which he himself voluntraily withdrew from AIR programmes.
He was a perfect mimicry artist & could imitate most of the carnatic musicians including his periyappa. He made a venture on Kalyani - Old & New .while visiting Palakkad school of music.
He explored how a raga undergoes change with time & used to demonstrate often.
His famous ragas that are earworming are hamsadwani,kalyani,mohanam,todi, begada,madhuvanti..
The best I have ever heard from him is his peelu... & nanda gopala in yamuna kalyani..They will melt the heart. He reserved them for best pupils.
He has composed few thillanas & few songs with the mudra as Ganaraja ( Naga raja reversed)
He once sang Adamodi galada at Thiruvaiyaru with more than 22 sangatis & got applause after applause , perhaps in the year 2002 or so. He had many nagaswara vidwans as his friends.
Thiruvaiyaru committee proceedings will always start with MKN singing the prayer song & will conclude with his singing of pavamana..
MKN Sir has have left this world but not my heart...
Sad to know the demise. I am staying nearby on Rangarajapuram Main Road, but was not fortunate to have met him. May God bless the noble soul with Sadhgathi. Narasimhan R.
