*Translation of the Speech about Sanskrit Language.. By the most revered Sri Sri Sri Mahasannidhaanam.. Bharathitheertha Mahaaswaaminah of Sringeri Sarada Peetham,*.
If you try to differentiate between languages and try to call some particular language as eternal, there would not be any language that would qualify for such consideration by you.
Then another distinguishing feature is introduced to compare.
If we try to say No one is engaging in conversation using this language (Sanskrit ) and hence we try to say that this is a dead language, that is not true. Even in the present time many lakhs of people are conversing and having communication in this language.
Are there not many scholars (In Sanskrit )
Are there not people who are not scholars and yet hold the Language in great respect and reverence ? Are there not many people who are ever eagerly attempting to converse in Sanskrit? Are there not many people who actually converse and exchange ideas in Sanskrit ? Therefore if someone says that Sanskrit is a dead language because non one is using that language for conversation, how can that statement be true.. and how can Sanskrit be a dead language ? Since this language is used by many people to converse with many other people, the language cannot be called a dead language.
It is just madness and illusory to call this language as dead language.
In fact, in respect of Sanskrit, there is a lot more of respect shown in foreigh lands in comparison to our own country, and that is in a way very shameful for us. ( We in India have failed to realize the value of our own Sanskrit)
It is indeed shameful that the students and scholars in foreign lands praise the language, and devoting greatest respect for the language, they are giving special place of honour for this language in their universities, whereas our interest and devotion for the language is very lukewarm in comparison.
By all means, it our duty to throw away such attitude of negligence to Sankrit. The wrong belief among people that Sanskrit is a dead language should be erased.
There is another crazy notion among some people that the grammatical rules in Sanskrit are too many, and that those rules are beyond the comprehension of people. It is therefore canvassed that we do not desire to use a languge which is so difficult to use because of its pure and strict grammatical rules. This wrong idea often keeps people away from learning the the language.
That idea is neither right nor valid.
Is there any language without its own rules of grammar?
Is there rules of grammar in Sanskrit alone ?
Is there no grammar in English languge ? Is there no grammar in Tamil? Is there no grammar in Telugu, the languge of Andhra.?
Show me a language without grammar.
If there is a languge, that language is structured by some rules of grammar. In every language there is grammar. Grammar is not unique to Sanskrit language.
In other languages too there are rules of grammar.. and such rules are to be leant if one is to use that languge. A person can converse and transact in a language only after mastering the rules of grammar unique to that language. In the same way, when one uses Sanskrit, one has to learn the rules of grammar of that language. And the language has to be applied in its purity.
It is just improper to state that there are rules of grammar in Sankrit and therefore we do not prefer to use this language.
Therefore, if at all there some reason or excuse for not using Sanskrit, it is just our lack of commitment or attention to the language.
Only that lack of commitment prevents you from learning this language.
If that attitude of lack of commitment is removed, Then you will definitely learn this language.
Then you will acquire erudition in this language.
Then you will become experts in making conversation in this language.
Nowadays, are you not seeing small boys conversing in Sanskrit ?
How do they converse in Sanskrit ?
They have devotion and commitment to the cause of that languae.
This is our own language. She is the mother of all the languages used by us.. Therefore we should all learn Sanskrit.
