Dear All,
Greetings and Namaste. My apologies for being off-air for quite sometime due to lack of spare time - which is likely to continue a while more.
Lord Dhanvantari Jayanti falls on Saturday (10-Nov-2012) and in that connection I am happy to share a very rare hymn on Lord Dhanvantari titled Amrita Sanjivana Dhanvantari Stotram from Sudarshana Samhita.
As usual a few snippets:
- There is another stotra with a similar name (Amrita Sanjivana Stotram) with a similar purpose/efficacy - but it is by Sage Vasishta on Lord Shiva.
- Though Lord Dhanvantari's Avatar is concomitant with Lord Kurma, Lord Mohini and Goddess Lakshmi, the number of hymns on Lord Dhanvantari are not many. - Not many purans, including Vishnu Purans, elaborate on the Avatar of Dhanvantari.
- I have seen an Ashottaram and a Sahasranama on Lord Dhanvantari. The Sahasranama (in Namavali form in Tamil) contains too many typo errors. Dhanvantari Kavacham is also said to be there. A separate treatise on Dhanvantari titled Dhanvantari Kalpa is said to be there.
- As we know, Dhanvantari is the bearer of the nectar and therefore is considered the presiding deity of Ayurveda and cure for all illnesses.
- Though Lord Dhanvantari is available as a Parivara Devata (minor Sannadhi) in many temples, I have not come across any temple where Lord Dhanvantari is the main deity.
- As I mentioned in an earlier mail a year ago, our texts claim that one's Purva Karma (accrued Karma over births) afflict in the form of diseases (pUrva janma kRRitaM pApaM vyAdhi rUpeNa bAdhayati) and Dhanvantari worship is said to be an effective remedy to cure such illnesses. An elaborate Dhanvantari Homa is prescribed for chronic illnesses.
- There are scores and scores of temples that claim to cure specific and generic illnesses, though not directly attributed to Lord Dhanvantari. A few of important ones are :
- Sri Vaidya Veeraraghava Perumal Temple in Thiruvallur near Chennai (one of the 108 Divya Desams) (All diseases)
- Thiruvelliyangudi near Kumbhakonam (cure for diabetes/Sukra related afflictions)
- Gunaseelam near Trichy (mental disorders)
- Ghatikachala (Singaperumal Koil) near Chennai (for mental illnesses)
- Doddamallur Aprameya Swamy Temple near Channapatna on the to Mysore from Bangalore (conception/progeny, cure for barrenness)
- Hrudayaleeswarar Temple in Thiruninravur near Chennai (for heart problems)
- Vaideeswaran Temple near Mayavaram (All diseases)
- Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thiruchendur (stomach related problems and cure from black magic)
- Sri Vanchinathar Temple, SriVanchiam near Kumbhakonam (cure for chronic and fatal diseases and revival of near-death cases)
- Sri Perumbudur Adikeshava Perumal Temple near Chennai - eyesight related problems
May Lord Dhanvantari bless us all with disease-free and long lives!
