                     द्वितीयारण्यके द्वितीयोऽध्यायः

य एष इमं लोकमभ्यार्चत् पुरुषरूपेण य एष तपति प्राणो वाव तदभ्यार्चत् प्राणो ह्येष य एष तपति तं शतं वर्षाण्यभ्यार्चत् तस्माच्छतं वर्षाणि पुरुषायुषो भवन्ति तं यच्छतं वर्षाण्यभ्यार्चत् तस्माच्छतार्चिनस्तस्माच्छतार्चिन इत्याचक्षत एतमेव सन्तं स इदं सर्वं मध्यतो दधे यदिदं किञ्च स यदिदं सर्वं मध्यतो दधै यदिदं किञ्च तसमान्माध्यमास्तस्मान्माध्यमा इत्यचक्षते ।

" The Supreme God entered into the bodies of the jIVas(with laxmI and vAyu) as antaryamin. The Supreme God shines in sUryamaNDala. He is prANa(here referring to Lord nArAyaNa). prANa entered into the bodies of the jIvas, He shines in sUryamaNDala. He entered into the bodies for a hundred years. Therefore, the duration of the life of men is a hundred years. As He remains in these bodies for a hundred years, He is designated as shatArchin, He is called shatArchin.

                 The Supreme God holds the jIvas in His abdomen. He also holds them being within them. Therefore, He is designated as mAdhyama, He is called mAdhyama. "

 

  The Names of the Sages are the Names of the Supreme brahman

एतमेव सन्तं प्राणो वै गृत्सोऽपानो मदः सः यत् प्राणो गृत्सोऽपानो मदस्तस्माद् गृत्समदस्तस्माद् गृत्समद इत्याचक्षत एतमेव सन्तं तस्येदं विश्वं मित्रमासीद्यदिदं किञ्च तद्यदस्येदं विश्वं मित्रमासीद्यदिदं किञ्च तस्मद्विश्वामित्रस्तस्माद्विश्वामित्र इ्तयाचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तं तं देवा अब्रुवन्नयं वै नः सर्वेषां वाम इति तं यद्देवा अब्रुवन्नयं वै नः सर्वेषां वाम इति तस्माद्वामदेवस्तस्माद्वामदेव इत्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तं स इदं पाप्मनोऽत्रायत यदिदं किञ्च स यदिदं सर्वं पाप्मनोऽत्रायत यदिदं किञ्च तस्मादत्रयस्तस्मादत्रय इत्याचक्षत एतमेव सन्तम् ॥२.२.१॥

" The Supreme God present in prANa and called prANa is gR^itsa, present in apAna and called apAna is mada. Therefore, He is called gR^itsamada.

The whole universe is liked by the Supreme God, therefore He is called vishvAmitra. The gods said that the Supreme God is vAma i.e., Auspicious to all of us, therefore, He is called vAmadeva. The Supreme God protects all from evil activities, therefore He is called atri. "  

 

एष उ एव बिभ्रद्वाजः प्रजा वै वाजस्ता एष बिभर्ति यद्बिभर्ति तस्माद् भारद्वाजः तस्माद् भारद्वाज इत्याचक्षत ।

एतमेव सन्तं तं देवा अब्रुवन्नयं वे नः सर्वेषां वसिष्ठ इति तं यद्देवा अब्रुवन्नयं वै नः सर्वेषां वसिष्ठ इति तस्माद् वसिष्ठः तस्माद् वसिष्ठ इत्याचक्षत ।

एतमेव सन्तं स इदं सर्वम्भिप्रागाद्यदिदं किञ्च स यदिदं सर्वमभिप्रागाद्यदिदं किञ्च तस्मात् प्रगाथाः तस्मात् प्रगाथा इत्याचक्षत ।

एतमेव सन्तं स इदं सर्वमभ्यपवयत यदिदं किञ्च स यदिदं सर्वमभ्यपवयत यदिदं किञ्च तस्मात् पावमान्यस्तस्मात् पावमान्य इत्याचक्षत ।

एतमेव सन्तं सोऽब्रवीदहमिदं सर्वमसानि यच्च क्षुद्रं  यच्च महदिति  ते क्षुद्रसूक्ताभवन् महासूक्ताश्च तस्मात् क्षुद्रसूक्तास्तस्मात् क्षुद्रसूक्ता इत्याचक्षते । 

" The Supreme God supports living beings. The living beings are called vAjas. He supports them. Therefore, He is called bhAradvAja, He is called BharadvAja.

 

The gods said: The Supreme God resides everywhere independently. Since the gods called Him vasishhTHa i.e., He who resides everywhere independently, He is designated as vasishhTHa.

 

The Supreme God recited the entire veda. As He recited the entire veda, He is called pragAthA, He is called pragAthA.

 

The Supreme God purifies all, therefore, He is called pAvamAnya, He is called pAvamAnya.

 

The Supreme God said: I will remain in all, in the small and the large. Therefore, the forms of the Lord in the small are called xudrasUkta, and the forms of the Lord present in the large are mahAsUkta. These are called the xudrasUkta and the mahAsUkta."

 

The terms sUkta, R^ik, axara etc., are Names of brahman

 

एतमेव सन्तं सूक्तं बतावोचतेति तत्सूक्तमभवत् तस्मात् सूक्तमित्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तमेष व ऋगेष ह्येभ्यः सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्योऽर्चत स यदेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्योऽर्चत तस्मादृगित्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तमेष वा अर्धर्च एष ह्येभ्यः सर्वेभ्योऽर्द्धेभ्योऽर्चत स यदेभ्यः सर्वेभ्योऽर्द्धेभ्योऽर्चत तस्मादर्धर्चस्तस्मादर्धर्च इत्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तमेष वै पदमेष हीमानि सर्वाणि भूतानि पादि स यदिमानि भूतानि पादि तस्मात् पदं तस्मात् पदमित्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तमेष वा अक्षरमेष ह्येभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः भूतेभ्यः क्षरति न चैनमतिक्षरन्ति स यदेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः भूतेभ्यः क्षरति न चैनमतिक्षरन्ति तस्मादक्षरं तस्मादक्षरमित्याचक्षते ।

एतमेव सन्तं ता वा एताः सर्वा ऋचः सर्वे वेदाः सर्वे घोषाः एकैव व्याहृतिः प्राण एव प्राण ऋच इत्येव विद्यात् ॥२.२.२॥

 

" The Supreme God taught the vedas to chaturmukha - brahmA and others, therefore He is called sUkta.

The Supreme God is R^ik. He moves away from the living beings when these die. Therefore He is called R^ik. He is called ardharcha, as He moves from their bodies. He is called pada, as all beings approach Him. He is called axara, as He bestows the desires of all. All R^iks convey Him. All vedas convey Him. All sounds, such as those of the sea, clouds, drumbeating, etc., also convey Him. He is one who is conveyed by all. All R^iks especially convey prANa i.e., Lord nArAyaNa. "
