How a serpent hears.
In Sanskrit a serpent is called chakshusravah meaning hearing through the eyes. It will either see or hear, but not both simultaneously. In olden days when there were no torch lights, people were passing through narrow lanes in the night by clapping hands. This would make the serpents hear with their eyes and they would not see the person.
