                       Dhanur Maasa's
                                 Special Dharma
                  [ from Saturday  the 17th Decr 2011 till Saturday  14th Jan 2012(bhogi)].
UttarayaNa is Day for devathas and Dakshinaayana as Night.
This night starts from Ashaada shukla ekaadashi .
The day on which Soorya enters DhanurRaashi till Makara sankramaNa  is called Dhanur Masa.
Dhanur maasa Arambha is the time- AruNodhaya  Kaala, being the last phase of the night for Devathas ;
According to tradition, the Gods wake up early in the morning during the month of Dhanurmas.
They perform special prayers to Sri Maha Vishnu during the auspicious period of "Brahm Muhurta", which is one and half hours before sunrise.
During this month, devotees offer prayers to the Lord very early in the morning. The month of Dhanurmas is considered a very special month for performing Puja of Vishnu.
The Devathas performed Pooja and offered Huggi to Sri Hari at that time. Hence during the Dhanurmaasa period, God is worshipped in the early morning
Sri Hari explains the significance of this masa to the Devatas.
More details are available in Smruthi MuktaavaLi-

In this month, preference to be given to POOJA only and not Bhojana-
Therefore Pooja for Deva, Rushi, Pitru TaRpaNa, Vaishya Devaadi kaRma and feeding Brahmins to be done and he should take food in the PRATHAH KALA itself. Or punah pooja could be done and have food in the afternoon also- both type of sampradaaya are permitted, as per Loka Vyvahaara.
The key to the timing of many rituals and festivals and other important social events, is the weather and harvest!

As the customs and traditions evolved, man had to take into the weather conditions as one among the most vital factors.

The cold weather in 'Markazhi' and limited number of day hours, called for special efforts to shake off lethargy, a natural tendency (hibernation!), and some reasons were created for early rising and early morning vigour of activities on the social plane!

Religion and spirituality being the easiest routes to motivation, the 'Bhakti' marga showed the way to effective measures to keep man active in healthy social interactions!

Therefore, as adjuncts, the concepts of gods' last few sleeping hours before the gods got up (in 'Uttarayana', after the 'dakshinayana', at the end of 'Markazhi'!) from sleep to commence their day (six months of 'uttarayana'!), and the ideal days for religious worship, were evolved and refined in all regions where winter peaked around those days, with similar thoughts and allied traditions evolving in other comparable religious practices!

Cold weather is the most 'creative' weather for production of all kinds, stamina for work being maximum, once the inertia and initial lethargy are successfully tackled, thus Lord Krishna also acknowledged the prime place of that month of winter, as top among the months!

This period of month is considered as highly auspicious for Vishnu devotees.
Old Hindu scriptures have set apart this month to be completely focused on devotional activities. Other non-devotional social activities (such as weddings) are prohibited during this month so that attention can be given exclusively to the worship of God without any diversions.
In South India, especially the Vaikunta Ekadasi, which falls during Dhanur Mas, attracts thousands of devotees.
Temples conduct special pujas during this period

People should attempt to complete the puja to the Lord before sunrise. All other activities like sandhya vandane, tarpaNa to Rishis, celestials and ancestors that one performs as part of the puja routine should be taken up after the puja has been completed. Timing is so critical that the shastras rate the quality of the puja based on when it completes. Puja that finishes when the stars are still twinkling is deemed to be the highest quality. Puja that finishes after the stars have vanished, but before sunrise, is deemed to be medium, whereas puja that finishes after sunrise is inferior. Puja performed in the afternoon is practically useless.
Preparation of Mudganna: (Huggi)

Since Shree Krishna had said in the Geetha that his presence is more in the month MaRgashira.
His pooja is to be completed before sunrise everyday with Mudgadanna [ HUGGI]  { good for body and mind}
Best: 1 part  rice: 2 parts  Moong Dhal (Hesaru Bele= Paitham Parapu);
Better: 1 rice: 1 Moong Dhal
Middle: 1 rice: ½ Moong dhal
Bad: 1 rice: ¼ Moong dhal
Hence the quantity of rice; Moong dhal should be as far as possible equal in proportion.
To add ginger  (Shunti, Curds, Jagerry.) as neivedyam so as to be blessed with His illimitable grace.
Scriptures recommend Dhanur Masa Pooja for prosperity., longevity and above all to be born again and again as a Vaishnavite.
Phala is offering Mudganna to Sri Hari:

"Smruti muktAvaLi" the reference work and authority for rituals says
"yathaa sankOchya satkarma bhunktElpa dvaadashIdinE |
tathaa praatardhanurmaasE kRutvaa karmaarchayEchCha maam "
meaning
that just as one curtails rituals on a saadhana dvaadashi so as to be able to partake the meal within the prescribed time, one should curtail rituals during dhanur maasa so as to finish the puja before sunrise.
However, there is one important difference. During saadhana dvaadashi the emphasis is on completing the puja and the meal on time, whereas here it is only on finishing the puja before sunrise and not the meal.

Smrithi Mukatavali says; that by preparing "Mudganna., i e, Huggi according to Shastra, and offering to Bhagavantha, he would
bestow the Bhaktha, " Sakala Bhoga" and in the end (Jnana dwara) Moksha.

Dhanurmas Phal Shruti:
Worshiping Vishnu on a single day during this auspicious period is equal to worshiping Vishnu with devotion for 1000 years. Every single step taken towards the nearby lake, river etc. for morning dip during this month brings forth merit equal to performing an Ashvamedha Yaga.
During this period the sun is in the Sagittarius or "Dhanur Rashi''the period when the sun passes from Sagittarius to Capricorn or "Makar Rashi'' is considered as a period of scarcity to the plenty in India. Feeding or giving alms to the deserving poor and Brahmins during this period is believed to confer great merit ie Punya

Lakshim Strotra to be recited during DhanuRmaasa.
According to Smruthi Muktavali, once Indra had lost his kingdom. Shachidevi offered Huggi as Neivedya to Mahalakshmi with these Dwadasha Naama. On account of this. Indra got back his kingdom and lived happily. So after offering Huggi to Bhagavantha, one should invariably recite this Lakshmi Dwadasha Naama Stotra without fail.
This is an interesting stotram, with 12 namas of Mahalakshmi. The Phalashruti verses say that if one chants this stotram for one year, that person becomes worthy of worship by Lakshmi Herself.

DANA , Dharma :  If any daana were given during this month especially on Vyateepatha day,. i.e. 31st  Decr 2011, Saturday,  to a worthy person, it would be most effective.
Argya to be given to Vyathipaathi Devatha in the form of Chakra Roopi Vishnu:
ವ್ಯತಿಪಾತ ಮಹಾಸತ್ವನ್
ಸರ್ವ ಪಾಪ ಪ್ರಣಾಶನ|
ಸಹಸ್ರ ಬಾಹೋ ವಿಶ್ವಾತ್ಮಾನ್

Now turn to South Direction,

Remembering the Pitrus, give Argya:

Vishnu priya Vyathipaatha

PitruNaam mama Vaikuntam
Prayachcha Bhghavan hare||

Twatrasaadhena Me Bhakthi
Rasve vamana paayini|

Prayachcha Bhaghavan mamaH||

Give ThaRpaNa.
During Dhanurmasa by offering "Mudganna" to Sri Hari, one would be blessed with 1000 years of Pooja Phala. It is the only Vratha that would give so much of Punys Phala compared to performing other vrathas.
Dhanurmaasa Pooja is very important and instrumental to attain Shatru Jaya, Dheeragyush, Dhanasampathu, Vedaaadhi shastra Abhyasay. By so doing one can fulfil his ambitions, attain yoga and above all he can be sure to born as VaishNava .in all his future Janma. That mahaabhagya is bestowed on him. In other words, it means that it is essential and a duty to perform pooja during Dhanurmasa as we do duty during other vratas.
Pancharatra says:
ಕೋದಂಡಸ್ಥೇ ಸವಿತರಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೂಷ: ಪೂಜನಾದ್ಧರೇ: |

kOdaMDasthE savitari
pratyUSha: pUjanaaddharE: |

It means, as said above, by doing Dhanurmaasa pooja at Usha Kala, it would fetch 1000 years pooja phala, in one day itself (Here we should not forget that it is essential and a duty to do Devara pooja on other days also)

Agneya PuraNa says:

Agneya PuraNa says:
In the following First stanza that if you do not perform Dhanurmasa Pooja, at the prathah kala, it is said to be MahApApa:

In the second stanza it says that the person who does not perform Dhanur maasa pooja would suffer daridrya , becomes "manda Buddhi", gets diseases for 7 Janmas.,

Jyothis Shastra (Bhaskareeya) says:
That the last day of Margashiramaasa and the dawn of Pushyamaasa, it would  be cold and one may find difficult to get up first. And to take bath, in the lake, river, and pond so early, is the second problem for him. To perform Sri Hari Pooja, that too  in wet clothes, in case he had not planned, he may feel difficult.
The Shastras say that all efforts should be made to get up early in the morning whatever be the conditions of oneself or weather, or ruthu kaala.,

One is doing duty to God who has given us this Vaisnava janma and we should make it ":SaRthaka" During Dhanurmaasa, finish snana, sandhyavandana etc and perform Devara pooja. Pray, sing hymns in the name of Sri Hari and offers Mudganna, i. e.  Huggi. During alpa dwadashi,, the pooja system are abridged so as to complete the PaaraNe within the stipulated time.
In the month of Dhanurmasa some changes will be made in daily schedule of the mutts/Temples  as per customs and usage. The schedule  are displayed in advance   for  the  devotees  to  plan accordingly for good conveniences.
So also during Dhanurmaasa the same  system to be adopted and pooja performed and neivedya completed before the stipulated time.
The following sanskrit sloka is simple:

Better for deva Pooja after stars are invisible:
Worst for deva pooja after SooRyodaya kala and
"NiraRthaka" - performing deva pooja in the afternoon.

The sanskrit sloka here is very simple to understand.

In all the mutts the poojas are performed very early in the morning and the  Food is served before 7 am.

Significance of this Masa ( Margazli Maasa) in Tamil nadu
Specially in Tamil Nadu, people get up very early in the morning The front yard of the house or the street, is cleaned at 4 am and decorated  with colourful Rangavalli, called "Kolam" by them. Vidwaans/pundits with their students  of Madras Sanskrit college at  Mylapore, perform Nagra SankeeRthana by  reciting vedaas and going round the  streets,  in groups. Ladies  prostrate before them, as they marched in the  streets.
So also we see "Harinama sankeeRthana" conducted by many bhajan mandalis,   with various Instruments and Bhaktas drawing a  small  chariot, wherein  a  decorated deity or Photo of a God  is placed. . Papanaasan sivan, the great Vaggeyakaara of Chennai Patnam used to go round  the Sri Kapaleswara temple, performing Nagara SankeeRthana and  also in  the streets near by singing the hymns of the Lord, like Sri Purandara daasaru.
The Puranadara dasara Bhaktha Manadali at Triplicane  also perform  Nagara  sankeerthana during MaRGazali Maasa.Temples are opened  through out Tamil Nadu at 4-30 am and Stotras are aired  from the temple loud speakers. Bhaktaas  after performing their  Nithya  pooja at house go  to the temple, perform PradhakshiNa and Namskaaram and  offer prayer and return with  hot Prasadam in their  palms distributing  to   other Bhakthas whom they meet. It is a pleasure to see God in  such  real  Bhakthas.
Andaal chose MargaLi maasa for the Vratha.
The term dhanur mAsam automatically brings up thoughts of Andaal and her Tirupaavai
The life of Andal is remarkable in its romantic
simplicity.
There was a devout Brahmin named
Vishnuchitta in Villiputtur, a town near Madurai.
His  daily duties included procuring flowers for the worship
of Lord Ranganatha at the local temple.
One morning, he discovered a baby girl lying under a Tulasi plant in
his flower garden.
Having no family of his own, Vishnuchitta felt it was God's grace that gave him this child.
Unknown to her father, she adorned herself daily with the flower garland he prepared for the Lord at the temple, admiring her reflection and thinking of herself as the Lord's ideal bride. When Vishnuchitta noticed it he was shocked and saddened by this desecration. That night, the Lord appeared to Vishnuchitta in his dream and told him that He missed the scent of Goda's body in the flowers, and that He preferred them only that way.

Andal imagines herself to be a Gopi or cowherd girl during the incarnation of Lord Krishna. She
yearns to serve Him and achieve happiness not just in this birth, but for all eternity, and describes the religious vows (pavai) that she and her fellow cowherd girls will observe for this purpose. Andal observed the Pavai Nonbu, (Vrat) early in the mornings in the month of Margazhi (December - January). It is believed that if girls observe the 'nonbu' or 'vrat', the Lord will bless them with good husbands. Andal wrote and sang 30 verses in praise of Lord Ranganatha and these verses called Thirupaavai.
Thiruppavai  will be sung in all the Vishnu Temple during Dhanurmasa specially in Tamilnadu and Temples worshipped by Sri VaishNavas in other parts of India and abroad.
This is the Masa approved by their elders. " Mahaa jano Yena Gathassa pantha".
Not only this, Shree Krishna in Bhagavad Geetha has said:
"Brihatsaama Kathaanaamnam\
Gayathri Chandasaam|
Maasaanam MaRgashirorsmi|
Kusumanaam Kusumaa karah|
Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita, says MasAnAm MarghasheerShaM- मासानां मार्गशीर्षोहम् . I manifest more in Margashirsha Maas among the different months in a year.

Hence Margashira maasa is Vishnu maasa - Shree Krishna Maasa for Tamilians.  Here also we can observe the same Bhakthi Bhava
Andal in her Thiruppavai poem says
"Narayanee  Namakke Parai tharuvaan"
Such was her belief and  attained  Moksha .  She says that NARAYAnA is Sarvottama.
Some  say  that  Dhanur masa-Marghazhi  is a Shoonya  Masa, why?.

Considered as inauspicious to do any good things other than Godly functions.
This month  is allotted to Gods and for us it a blank - meaning Shoonya -

The month Marghazhi (December-January) derives its name from the star Mrigasirsha occurring on or immediately after the month's Pournami (Purnima - full moon).
It is also known as Dhanur masa since during this month the sun transits through Dhanur rasi (Sagittarius).
Vedas and agamas say mornings in this month are ideal for worship of the Lord.

Krishna underlines its special nature by saying in Bhagavad Gita that among months he is Marghazhi, due to it's Jayanti this month.

In temples all over India during this month there is special pre-dawn worship.

Udipi:   Every Day throughout the month of Dhanur Masa there is a special Pooja which takes place at dawn. Pongal and many  other sweets are prepared as an offering for this pooja which is later on served to the few invited people.
Since this month is set apart exclusively for worship, the month is considered as –Shoonya masa - inauspicious for all Shubha events like marriages and other such functions ,  Any good deeds are not performed in Marghazhi.

The shaivite composition Thiruvembavai and the  Sri-vaishnavite Thiruppavai are particularly recited during this month in Tamil NaDu..

In Hindu Mythology we set off certain days or months for celebrating gods only and these are considered inauspicious for other functions.
In Andhra Pradesh and Karanataka,  during Dhanur Masa they observe  Katyayani  Vrata  dedicated to  goddesses Katyayani.

Vaikunta  EKadashi and Bhogi are observed as auspicious days
In TTD Goda Kalyanam is a major event.
In Sri Rangam Ranaganatha swamy Temple, Dhanur Masa is a Major event. In Tamil Nadu Dhanur Masa is observed as 'Pavai Nombu'

This is  a note on the significance of  Dhanurmaasa

That  is the greatness of Dhanur Masa.
  Why not we observe !
