Difficulties are good

Sri Gurubhyonamaha,

Upanishad Saara - Jnana dhaara

#64. Sadhana chatushtaya sampathi

Titiksha (Continued..)

To take the adversities of life in the right spirit there are two more oft quoted examples:

1. If Gold has to be purified, then it can't be done with solid Gold. The Gold is first heated up on fire for a length of time;  after it melts, the impurities are removed and consequently we get pure Gold. Similarly if we need to purify our character/personality, then it can't be done when the personality is solid/rigid. When we go through challenging times in our lives, our ego/pride melts and its easy to purify our character, with some effort. That is why certain experiences are called as humbling experiences; we become humble when ego diminishes.

2. If a beautiful sculpture has to be shaped from a stone, then the stone has to receive a lot of blows. Similarly blows that we receive from life, will shape our character into a beautiful mental personality.

Hence we need not think difficulties are bad for us. In fact difficulties are good if they help us to become a better person.

If we develop a strong conviction that hardships of life are meant to help us evolve mentally, then we will accept and bear them without lamenting. This is Titiksha.
