On Onion - In charak samhita

Courtesy: Sri.Bryan Hill
=================
From the charaka - saMhitA, sUtrasthAna, adhyAya 27, shlokas 175 - 176 on palANDu and lashuna:
श्लेष्मलो मारतुघ्नश्च पलाण्डुर्न च पित्तनुत् । आहारयोगी बल्यश्च गुरुर्वृष्योऽथ रोचनः ॥१७५॥
क्रिमिकुष्ठकिलासघ्नो वातघ्नो गुल्मनाशनः । स्निग्धश्चोष्णश्च वृष्यश्च लशुनः कटुको गुरुः ॥१७६॥
" The palANDu (onion) aggravates kapha, alleviates vAta and not pitta, is useful in diet, strengh - promoting, heavy, aphrodisiac and relishing.
The lashuna (garlic) alleviates worms, leprosy, leucoderma, vAta and gulma and is unctuous, hot, aphrodisiac, pungent and heavy. "
Onion and garlic should be consumed only when one is diseased, otherwise the nishhedhas forbidding their consumption are correct due to the effects of the items, such as vR^ishhya (aphrodisiac). Certainly celibate brahmacharis, vanaprasthas and sannyAsis cannot be eating these items as a regular part of their diet!

onion & Garlic

Courtesy: Smt.Nirmala Narayanan
============================
We are advised to avoid onion and garlic in our diet.
Why? Some explain that they trigger lustful tendencies; hence, we should avoid
them in our diet. But what is the real reason behind this?

During the 'amruta matanam' [churning the Divine Ocean of Milk ('Ksheeraabdi')
for acquiring 'amrut'] Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful maiden to obtain
the 'amrut' for the Devas from the hands of the Asuras
who had snatched away the pot containing the 'amrut'. Taking even a small drop
of 'Amrut', the tastiest of all things in all worlds, one faces no death, has no
fear of disease, no hunger or sleep and always remains fresh and active.

Mohini holding the pot of 'amrut' in her hand asked the Devas and the Asuras to
sit in a row facing each other so that she could distribute the 'amrut' to them.
The Asuras dumbstruck by Mohini's beauty sat gaping at her and failed to notice
her action. She was serving the 'amrut' only to the Devas. However, Rahu, one of
the Asuras, noticed it and surreptitiously moved to the row of the Devas and sat
between the Sun and the Moon gods and received the 'amrut'. The Sun and the Moon
noticed him and quietly warned the Lord who was in the form of Mohini. The Lord
hit Rahu on the head with the ladle and ordered him to spit out the 'amrut'. He
spat out the 'amrut' and that fell out as onion and garlic.

Since they have come out of the 'amrut' they are good for health but since they
have come out of an Asura's [demon] mouth they contain demonic elements in them.

Our Puranas detail how a 'jiva' takes birth on earth. The 'jivas' remain as tiny
atoms in space. At the appropriate time, they enter the rain clouds, fall down
as rain and enter the 'Oshadiis' [food grains] on earth. They enter the male as
'retas' [sperm] through the food he consumes and then is transferred to the womb
of the mother where it begins to take form. The demonic qualities are present in
onion and garlic. Thus, one who consumes onion and garlic begets children with
demonic qualities. It is for this reason that one avoids onion and garlic.

Tulsi as Medicine

Tulsi or basil is a herbal remedy for a lot of common ailments.
·         The juice of tulsi leaves can be used to bring down fever. Extract of
tulsi leaves in fresh water should be given every 2 to 3 hours. In between one
can keep giving sips of cold water. In children, it is every effective in
bringing down the temperature.
·         Tulsi is an important constituent of many Ayurvedic cough syrups and
expectorants. It helps to mobilize mucus in bronchitis and asthma. Chewing tulsi
leaves relieves cold and flu.
·         For earache a few drops of tulsi extract, if instilled, relieves the
symptoms promptly.
·         The juice of fresh leaves, flower tops and slender roots is a very god
antidote for snake and scorpion bite.
·         Its oil is rich in vitamin C, carotene, calcium and phosphorus.
Besides, it has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.
·         Ayurvedic tulsi preparations have significantly reduced the symptoms
of viral hepatitis.
·         In diabetics it helps in lowering the blood sugar level.
·         Its anti-spasmodic property can be utilized to relieve abdominal
colics. The extracts are also helpful in digestive disorders.
·         Tulsi leaves have properties similar to the currently available
anti-TB drugs like Streptomycin and Isoniazide.
·         Oil of tulsi has been used as a potent anti-malarial drug. It also has
mosquito repellent properties.
·         It raises the human body immunity by increasing the antibody
production.
·         Experimental studies on animals have shown anti-stress activity with
tulsi extract.
·         Tulsi has anti-fertility effect by reducing the estrogen hormone
levels in females and decreasing the sperm count in men.
·         It is also used to treat ringworm of the skin.

Onion, garlic & chillies -Why forbidden for Brahmana?

Courtesy : G.Balasubramaniam & Raj Pundit
===================================================================

So far as our knowledge and belief goes, onions are forbidden not only for those seeking "self-realization" but also for consumption as such by all Hindus, especially the Dvijas.

lashunaM gRnjanam chaiva palANDu kavakAni cha
abhyakshAni dvijAtinAma medhya prabhavAni cha |MS V.5

One would have thought that it was obvious that onions and garlic affect the body as the former causes a defensive reaction by making the eyes water as propanethial- S-oxide is a gas that's released when the cell wall of an onion is broken. This gas reacts with the water in the eyes and produces sulphuric acid. Though users of garlic often extol its virtues they fail to mention its adverse effects including halitosis (nonbacterial bad breath), indigestion, nausea, emesis, and diarrhoea. Garlic can interact with warfarin (used by many patients with heart/blood pressure issues) antiplatelets, saquinavir, antihypertensives, calcium channel blockers and hypoglycaemic medicines (used by diabetics).

Not only that, even garlic, turnips, mushrooms, white brinjal (baingan) and red radish have been forbidden. And these names appear along with pork and chicken! (Yet some brothers think they can be consumed!) Here is the evidence in substantiation:

Chhatra-aakam vid-vaaraaham ch lashunam graam-kukkutam/
Palaandum grinjanam chaiva matyaa jagdhvaa patet dvijah// Manu 5:19

Vyas Smriti adds white brinjal and red radish also to the above when it says: palaandum shveta-vrintaakam rakta-moolakam-eva ch // (3:60).

We may point out here that onions if eaten knowingly cause a Dvija to fall from his jAti (matyaa jagdhvaa patet dvijah), to regain which he has to undergo a repentance by way of performance of Chaandraayan Vrata for one month. How can it, therefore, be a permitted food item food then? If some modernised Hindus have started consuming it these days to impart a mlechha taste and flavour to their dishes that would not make it a Hindu food item.

The fact remains that the kind of food one eats has impact on his or her purity of thoughts and concentration. They do not become a popular Hindu food simply because some nominal Hindus in the North have started using it as a result of Mlechh Sansarg (company of Muslims and Firangis) and un-Aryan influence on them of their Aachaar, Vichaar, Vihaar and Aahaar in the course of last few centuries.

They have always been a forbidden item. Even there is a Hukam Naamaa in the name of the Ninth Guru, Hind kee chaadar Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh ji, in which he has ordered his disciples, the Sikhs, not to go even near onion and garlic! The words therein are: "gaNDA lassan de nerhe naheen jAnA." All religiously inclined people, even in the North (including Kashmiri Pandits), abhor its use to this day, especially the Vaishnava.
