#63. Sadhana chatushtaya sampathi

Titiksha

After Shama, Dama and Uparati, the next sampathi to be biuilt as a preparation to receive Atma Vidya, is Titiksha. Titiksha is the practice of tolerating the difficulties of life without complaining/cribbing or being anxious about them.

Titiksha can be practiced only if we develop a right attitude towards the hardships of life. If we carefully analyze, its all about how we receive and respond to the hardships.

There is an interesting analogy to demonstrate this:
1. Carrots are initially strong, but when boiled they loose their strength.
2. Eggs are initially fragile, but when boiled the inside gets hard, though they look the same externally.
3. Coffee beans when boiled, gives a beautiful aroma and flavour to the very water that boiled it.

Similarly when we are subjected to difficulties we may become one of the 3 kinds:

1. We can loose our inner strength and be shattered (like carrots after boiling).
2. Or we may turn bitter and become stone hearted from inside, though we may look the same from outside (like eggs after boiling).
3. Or amazingly, we may make the best of the hardships that we go through and:
         - emerge out with great inner strength.
         - learn from the experiences and become wise.
         - be humbled by the blows and build virtues like
            compassion, forgiveness, etc.

If we choose to be of the third kind, then we will accept difficulties of life, as experiences that make us better people.
