Vaikunta Ekadasi Special – Two meals on Ekadasi day? (Gems from Deivathin Kural)
Periyava has explained the importance of observing this Vratha in great lengths and depths and the significance behind it.
Two meals on Ekadasi day?
"Ekadashyam thu karthavyam sarvesham bhojana dwayam"
This is the first part of a sloka. What is the meaning of this? "Ekadashyam thu karthavyam Sarvesham" means, "On Ekadasi day, it should be done like this by all the people".
What should be done?
The answer comes as "Bhojana Dwayam".
Don't you understand the meaning? "Dwayam' means Two. "Bhojana Dwayam", means, two times food.
It conveys the meaning that everyone should have food two times on Ekadasi day.
What is this? Normally, we have heard that on Ekadasi, one has to fast, and also go waterless. Whereas, here, you are saying that it is said, not once, but food should be taken twice?
This sloka is actually a wonderful play of words. The word "Bhojana" in this should be split into two words, "Bho" and "Jana'. Then only correct meaning can be had.
"Bho" means, calling all the people, like "Hey". "Bho Jana!" means calling, "Hey, people".
The meaning of this sloka (half sloka) becomes:
"Hey, People! On Ekadasi day, two (things) have to be done by all –that is, "two things are required to be done".
It does not mean two meals but two activities.
What are those two activities which require to be done by all the people?
That is given in the second part of the sloka.
"Sudhopavasa: Prathama: sakkadha sravanam thatha:"
First thing is Upavas (fasting) and the second thing is to listen to divine stories.
"Ekadhachyam thu karthavyam sarvesham bhojana dwayam"
"Sudhopavasa: Prathama: sakkadha sravanam thatha:"
On Ekadasi day, all the people should observe fast; listen to the greatness (stories) of Bhagawan.
