1. Padma –Introduction lines

Padma means Lotus (Thamara). Padma is a common name in all Hindu communities. There are many nair ladies with name Padmakumari. Among Brahmins it is simply Padma, Padmini or Padmavathi. Rarely Padma Ammal. But we may fondly   name as Patthu also sometimes.

Padmanabhan is also common in all Hindu communities. Late Mannathu Padmanabhan Nair is known to all Keralites, founder of Nair Service society in Kerala. They run a number of Educational institutions- schools, colleges and Hospitals. My home Pandalam is the 2nd Headquarters of Nair service society. 1st one Chenganassery.

We have two high schools, one college and one Medical mission hospital at Pandalam. It has to be mentioned that I had all my education with NSS institutions. This writing capacity I have earned by studying in those institutions. NSS has got only one engineering college at Palghat.Padmanabha Iyer is a common name among iyer males.

For performing Bhagavathi seva we make out a Padmam with rice powder and colors from Turmeric etc and place the Nilavialkku over it on a plantain leaf. When talking of Padma I have to talk of Anantha Padmaabha swamy at Anantha puri (Trivandrum) where I had been from 1991 to 2004 on account of my career.

Before I go over to Padma river details let me also refer to Padmavyuham of Army formation, many times referred in Mahabharatha.

2. Padma trans Boudary River

The Padmais a major trans-boundary river in Bangladesh. It is the main tributary of the Ganges, which originates in the Himalaya. The Padma enters Bangladesh from India near Chapai Nababganj. It meets the Jamuna near Aricha and retains its name, but finally meets with the Meghna near Chandpur and adopts the name 'Meghna' before flowing into the Bay of Bengal.

Rajshahi, a major city in western Bangladesh, is situated on the north bank of the Padma. It's maximum depth is 479 m and average depth is 295 m.

3. Course

Padma river originates in the Gangotri Glacier of the Himalaya, flows along with Ganges to the Bay of Bengal through India, entering Bangladesh at Shibganj in the district of Chapai Nababganj. Just west of Shibganj, the distributary Bhagirathi emerges and flows southwards as the Hooghly.

After the point where the Bhagirathi branches off, the Ganges is officially referred to as the Padma and the river Bhagirathi uses the name of Ganga. Later the Britishers started calling Bhagirathi as Hoogly river.

Dear friends, I was earlier totally confused when my friends from Calcutta say Hoogly river. Now I very clearly understand it is Padma which in turn a distributary of Ganges!!!

Further downstream, in Goalando, 2200 km away from the source, the Padma is joined by the mighty Jamuna (Lower Brahmaputra) and the resulting combination flows with the name Padma further east, to Chandpur. Here, the widest river in Bangladesh, the Meghna, joins the Padma, continuing as the Meghna almost in a straight line to the south, ending in the Bay of Bengal.

 4. Mythology

The Padma is numerously mentioned in Hindu Mythology including the Vedas, the Puranas, the Ramayana and the MahabharataIn all myths, the river is mentioned as a Goddess though the origin differs.

5. Padma losing its glory

After building of Farakka Barrage on the upstream of the river in Indian West Bengal the water carrying capacity reduces significantly that put harm to a large part of southern Bangladesh as well as fish life and other living creatures of the river.

6. RAVI RIVER INTRODUCTION

Friends

I was thinking only Brahma puthra is the river having a male name. Very late I understood there is a river by Name Ravi. In fact it is from some military co- passengers in a train journey.

Though Ravi and Raveendran are common among other communities recently I read somewhere the name Ravi Iyer. In Tamilnadu Ravichandran is named for male Brahmins though rare. Late Tamil actor Ravichandran (who married actress Sheila) is a Brahmin from Pudukkottai where I have worked for more than two years. Ravi means SUN.

7. Ravi- another Trans flowing river

Ravi is a river flowing through India and Pakistan. It is one of the five rivers, which gives the Punjab region its name. The Ravi was known as Iravati to Indians in Vedic period and as Hydraotes to the Ancient Greeks. Its waters drain to the Indian Ocean through the Indus River.

8. Course

Ravi River originates in the Himalayas in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India following a north westerly course, and is a perennial river. It turns to the southwest, near Dalhousie, and then cuts a gorge in the Dhaola Dhar range entering the Punjab plain near Madhopur near Pathankot.

It then flows along the Indo-Pak border for some distance before entering Pakistan and joining the Chenab River. The total length of the river is about 720 km.

The waters of the Ravi River are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan and the resulting Indus Basin Project.

It is also called 'The river of Lahore' since that city is located on its eastern bank. (Lahore where Nehru was born).  On its western bank is located the famous town of Shahdara Bagh with the tomb of Jahangir and the Tomb of Noor Jahan.

9. History

Part of the battle of the ten kings was fought on the Parushni river, which according to Yaska (Nirukta 9.26) refers to the Iravati River (Ravi River) in the Punjab. Macdonell and Keith write, "the name [Parushni] is certainly that of the river later called Ravi (Iravati)".

10 Poorna swaraj Flag hoisting

When Congress under the president ship of Jawahar Lal Nehru changed its goal to Purna Swaraj, the national tricolour was unfurled at the bank of river Ravi at mid-night on 31 December 1929 amidst the Vande Mataram and Inquilab Zindabad Slogans
