The secretive upAsanA of shrI gaNDabheruNDa nR^isiMha has remain concealed among qualified practitioners for ages. The basic form of the Lord constitutes of eight faces:

1.    gANDabheruNDa pakShirAja:

4.    hayagrIva:

Worship of this face with the associated mantra grants one proficiency in all shAstras and ultimately the liberating knowledge.

5.    AdivarAha:

8.    bhallUka:

Worship of this face with the associated mantra grants one ShoDasha siddhis.

The hidden ninth face of the Lord, sometimes referred to as baDabAnala mukha, refers to Adi nArAyaNa and is visible to a true prapanna bhAgavata alone. This face grants one kaivalya. The three mantras associated with this face are the kaivalya nR^isiMha mantra, aShTAkSharI and mantrarAja.

An advanced upAsaka who has earned the grace of AchArya is blessed with the secret of the upAsanA of dvAdasha mukha gaNDabheruNDa nR^isiMha whose form constitutes of the following nR^isiMha mUrtis:

1.    gaNDabheruNDa nR^isiMha
2.    vyAghra nR^isiMha
3.    hayAnana nR^isiMha
4.    vAnarendra nR^isiMha
5.    Adi varAha nR^isiMha
6.    gAruDa nR^isiMha
7.    bhallUka nR^isiMha
8.    vR^ishabhArUDha nR^isiMha
9.    haMsArUDha nR^isiMha
10.    kUrmArUDha nR^isiMha
11.    sharabhArUDha nr^isiMha
12.    mahAvishNumukha garuDArUDha nR^isiMha

The Lord in this form is worshipped with thirteen mAlA mantras and the 118 lettered mUla mantra. The uttarA~Ngas for this mantra are eight including mahAsudarshana.

An upAsaka with greater qualification and control on the senses is blessed by the AchArya with the details of the worship of Urdhvamukha gaNDabheruNDA nR^isiMha, who, along with the previous 12 forms, includes the following:

1.    mAyA nR^isiMha
2.    raudra nR^isiMha
3.    vidAraNa nR^isiMh
4.    vAruNa nR^isiMha
5.    jvAlA nR^isiMha
6.    vIra nR^isiMha

8.    mahogra vIra vijayapratApa nR^isiMha
9.    sudarshana nR^isiMha (propitiated by jayanta)
10.    lakShmI nr^isiMha (propitiated by mahAdeva)

The dhyAna for each of these faces, the mAhAtmya and details of the associated shaktis (For e.g. shakti for haMsArUDha nR^isiMha is vAgvAdinI; padmAvatI is the consort of kUrmArUDha nR^isiMha who is nidhipradAyaka) should be understood from Sadguru. Other forms of the Lord which include the dvAtriMshanmukha and panchAshanmukha gaNDabheruNDa nR^isiMhas are also worshipped by upAsakas for attaining various siddhis. The gaNDabheruNDa nR^ihari nAma stotra popular among upAsakas is simply a list of the fifty faces/forms of the Lord. The shAstras declare aShTAkSharI and mantrarAja as the basic qualification for the initiation into the worship of the wondrous form of bhagavAn known as gaNDabheruNDa nR^isiMha.

After death what....???

Radhe Krishna To all,

What happens to the soul after it is departed from the body?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

If someone commits suicide to escape trifle worldly issues, it is indeed pitiable and deplorable. This is because the soul undergoes unbearable pain until their 'karma' on earth comes to an end.

Such a soul roams around and tries to catch other weak people and trouble them. Those people who practice black magic deploy these roaming spirits for their mundane and sinister needs. Exactly the same thing happens, if someone dies in an accident or account of murder etc. I have witnessed this myself.

The rest go to 'Pitru Lokas' and wait to be born once again on Earth. There are a lot of heavens and hells described in Srimad Bhagavatam which the souls experience
accordingly.

While the soul experiences the benefits of the merits ('punya') in the heaven or the hells for their sins, it is sent back to earth for re-birth if there is balance 'karma' to undergo. However, there is absolutely no assurance that it will be a human birth again. Human birth is the rarest of the rarest and it can take yugas and yugas to get one.

There are some higher 'lokas' like Satya loka, Brahma loka etc., which can be attained only by penances and not by 'punya'.

Apart from this, the soul reaches the 'lokas' according to the Guru or God that one worships.

If a person had worshipped a devil or followed an evil master, then he goes to devil's lokas.

If 'Saguna Bhakti' was performed, a soul reaches Vaikuntam and if 'Nirguna Bhakti' was performed, the soul reaches Kaivalyam, otherwise known as Jivan Mukti or liberation.

However, if a soul is not liberated until 'pralaya', it carries over to the next
cycle of creation.

So my dear children, where ever you are, you are all my children.

I beseech you, falling in your feet with love and request you to chant the Maha Mantra to come out of this cycle of births and deaths.

Enroll your name with Nama Dwaar, and I will chant on your behalf and ensure that  you will be liberated!"

Some clarifications about Devasam(Sraadham)

Q1. In Sraddhams at our homes it said the left out food should not be given to all and sundry and is either given to a cow or it is buried under earth. why?

According Dharma sastras ( Sastrigal was quoting the Sraddha Mantrams) -

a.  On Sraddha day the entire food is prepared for our Pithrus who are our guests on that day ; one should the Bhava the whole day and night that ancestors are guests and therefore one should not think about food for self.  The ancestors after partaking the food bless us and tell the family to share the left out food amongst themselves and with blood relationships or Daayadis. They have not permitted to share the food with all and sundry.
Sastrigal's suggestion, which is very valid, is if at all one wishes to feed many others, one can cook separately many items as desired and feed those people who are not blood related without transgressing sastras.

Q2. Does sharddha to be done as Parvanam (i.e. with homam) or Hiranyam ( no homam)   In pindam and when food is served to Shraddha brhamanas some " annam" is scattered. why? - again quoting mantrams from Sraddha Kaandam

All religions in one way or the other observe annual ceremony for the departed souls. But all of them do for the one dead ALONE, while in our Dharma one does not only for one's father, grand father and great grand father ( or substitute mother instead of father) but for the entire " Kulam" means starting from the first person of the kulam.
In Parvanam ( doing Homamam) - there are certain Devathas who never get haavir Bhagams ( i.e. these devathas are not called while doing any of the homams in ones life time);
and these un -called devathas get satisfied in Parvan Sraddham. Therefore doing Hiranya sraddham these devathas are deprived.
The scattering of annam is for those boys ( who died when young and before their Upanaynam ) and those girls who dies before they were married off are satisfied by Mantras and by this annam.
Not only the above - Brhamanas have to be in Agni Sambhandham always ; that is why Samithadaanam for Brhamacharis and from the day of marriage Oupasnam - both these are to be done by Brhamachari and Gruhastha in the morning and evening after Sandhya Vandnams to be done and the Oupasana agni should never die; if dies needs to do Prayaschittam and re-start.  Therefore Brhamnas can never be without Agni Sambhandham . Today where is Agni with Brhamins?  Those Brhamins who are w/o Agni Sambandham are condemned and if Sraddham takes care even these Brhamanas in one's kulam to get Sad gaati.

Q3.  What to do when one's swashaka ( Sage Veda Vyasa split  Vedas into different Shakhas so that all need not learn the entire Vedas . This Vyasa did knowing fully weel people will be incapable of learning all the Vedas; the shakha one follows heriditerily is swa Shakha) Brhamana is not available for Sraddha ?

This question will not arise b'cause there is one year time before hand to search and find out some one in any of the cities and bring them by paying train or air fare . If absolutely one cannot find any one then he needs carry out Sraddha with any of the brhamanas available from other shakhas.

Q4.  Vishnu ealai - only Brhamachari must sit........ carify

According to Shastras only Vaiswadeva and Pithru brhamans are specified ( in each category ideal is 4 Brhamana / category but today getting one/ category is getting tough).
The mantras cover ( Janardhana Priyantaam ) Vishnu also ; there need not be separate Vishnu elai; but due to tradition this has come and Vishnu elai any one brhamachari or gruhastha can eat but should not be from the same family

Hari as Sarvottama

Hare shrinivasa,
A little input(adhyatmika view) on the issue of Bhrugu  events while establishing Hari sarvottamatwa.
1)      It is not "the only" event which proves hari sarvottama, it is one of the many, hence it needs different angle of view to understand completely. There are many instances available in purana prapacha which looks strange if we take superficial meanings or word to word meanings. So it needs to be judged based on Bhasha-jnaana as explained in MBTN

2)      It is well known that " maharSheenaam bhrugurahaM". Among maharshis, bhrugu is blessed with  vibhooti roopa of paramatma. This also get confirmed when "bhrugu" was selected for establishing sarvottama devate

3)      Bhrugu  is "mantra drishtaara" and he enjoys 15th level in Taratamya kakshe. Taittareeya upanishat has a "bhruguvalli" chapter and he was enlightened by his father Varuna about paramatma tatwa etc. So he was aware of Hari sarvottama tatwa prior to this. However, it needs to be explained to universe through this event was the reason behind the drama(hari sankalpa).

4)      And the act was completely supported by Brahma and Shiva. They never objected about the question, infact they helped in establishing the Hari sarvottama by guiding Bhrugu.

5)      When Bhrugu visited  first Satyaloka , brahma was doing dhyana and Veda paraayana (stuvantaM jagadeeshaanaaM naaraayaNa manaayamayam...")
It implies that he wanted to show that "He is not sarvottama" as he is praising Vedagamya Shri Hari and hence bhrugu was indirectly instructed to decide as hari sarvottam only. Similarly, bhrugu says " when yourself stating as I am not a sarvottama, let your worship also be not done as sarvottama devate anusandhaana"..

6)      Next visit was at the place of Rudradeva. Rudradeva was in privacy with Parvati. During this period bhrugu arrives to test. Shiva ignores since shiva does not wanted to make Bhrugu to feel that Shiva-sarvottama which is against the vaidika sidhanta. And also he makes an act of attacking Bhrugu with his trishoola to show that one should not test "hari-hara-brahmaadigala" instead arrive through tatwajnaana jijnaase.

7)      Later Bhrugu visits vaikuntha. Sarvajna hari ignores him which makes bhrugu to reach angry state. He stamps his feet on Hari's chest.
If the person(bhrugu) who wanted to test sarvottamatwa and looses his temper means he is bound by prakrati. However, Naraayana is above this all, because he is "purushOttama".
He cares bhrugu " kimartham taaDitaM vipra kOmalaanghritalEn tat ".... and makes him feel good  with warm-water.

"this body is representing Vaikuntha; Heart is private place; asthadala kamala is sacred spot; here hari dwells and rests on shesha(pancharaatra abhimaani) i.e., Vedas are seat for Hari. He is present along with shruti-tati abhimani lakshmi. Bhrugu with his swaroopa jnaana(paada talEna = with stamping foot) understands that the hari who is outside is the same who dwells in my heart(bimba darshana)"

Bhrugu decides, when Hari cared with peaceful mind without any anger which shows he is devoid of kaama-krOdha etc praakrata guna.
Bhrugu announces that AhaMkaara tatwa(shiva) is not supreme, vijnana tatwa also not complete supreme as it requires Hari help and Avyakta(mahalaksmi) is dependent on Naryana, and hence Narayana is sarvottama.
        "hari sarvOttamaH saakShaat ramaadevi tadaMtaram|
        Vidhi-vaayustadaMtEcha tadaMtE sharvapoorvakaaH.......

This drama was prelude for shrinivasa kalyana which was a hari sankalpa.

Finally: " sarvam karmaakhilam paartha jnaanEna parisamaapyate"

Karmas

Once an old man was travelling by train on a pilgrimage to Brindavan. At night, whilst he was asleep, his wallet fell from his pocket. A co-passenger found it the next morning and enquired as to whom the wallet belonged. The old man said it was his. A picture of Sri Krishna inside the wallet was proof that the wallet really belonged to him.

The old man then began to relate the story of the wallet. He soon had a group of eager listeners around him. Lifting up the purse for all to see, the old man said: This purse has a long history behind it. My father gave it to me years ago when I was a mere schoolboy. I kept my little pocket money in it and also a photograph of my parents.

Years passed. I grew up and began studying at university. Like every youth, I became conscious of my appearance. I replaced my parents´ photograph with that of my own and I would look at it often. I had become my own admirer.

Then came marriage. Self-admiration gave way to the consciousness of a family. Out went my own picture and I replaced it with that of my wife´s. During the day I would open the wallet many times and gaze at the picture. All tiredness vanished and I would resume my work with enthusiasm.

Then came the birth of my first child. What a joy I experienced when I became a father! I would eagerly rush home after work to play with my little baby. Needless to say, my wife´s picture had already made way for the child´s.

The old man paused. Wiping his tearful eyes, he looked around and said in a sad voice: Friends, my parents passed away long ago. My wife too died five years ago. My son- my only son- is now married. He is too busy with his career and his family. He has no time for me. I now stand on the brink of death. I do not know what awaits me in future. Everything I loved, everything I considered my own, has left me.

A picture of Lord Krishna now occupies the place in my wallet. I know He will never leave me. I wish now that I had kept HIS picture with me right from the beginning! He alone is true; all others are just passing shadows.

Sri Sarada Devi, the holy mother, says: Don´t be afraid my child, these earthly ties are transitory. Today they seem to be the be-all and end-all of life, and tomorrow they vanish. Your real tie is with God. God is one´s very own. It is the eternal relationship. He is ever looking after you. Call on the Lord who pervades the entire universe. He will shower His blessings upon you.

Your wealth will remain on earth; your cattle will remain in the stables, your wife will come till the entrance door, your relatives and friends will come till the cremation ground, your body will accompany you till the funeral pyre, but on the way beyond this life only your Karmas will accompany you.

Indian way of doing Business

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in
D.C. One from Bangladesh, another from India and the third, from China.

They go with a White House office to examine the fence.

The Bangladesh contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring,
then works some figures with a pencil. "Well", he says, "I figure the job will run about $900. ($400 for materials, $400 for my team and $100 profit for me)".

The Chinese contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700. ($300 for materials, $300 for my team and $100 profit for me)".

The Indian contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."

The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"

The Indian contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we
hire the guy from China to fix the fence."

         "Done!" replies the government official.

Story of Ganga

 Ganga Devi
In Hinduisam, the river Ganga or Ganges as called by westerners is considered sacred. It is worshipped by all Hindus and personified as a goddess in Hinduism, who holds an important place in the Hindu religion. Hindus believe that bathing in the river on certain occasions causes the remission of sins and facilitates the attainment of salvation. Many people believe that this effect obtains from bathing in Ganga at any time. People travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga; this immersion also is believed to be meritorious as the ashes are believed to go to heaven. Several places sacred to Hindus lie along the banks of the river Ganga, including Haridwar, Allahabad and Varanasi.
Of course in 2004 I had been to Allahabad and Varanasi and could have a dip in its waters at Hanuman Ghat. Really I could feel something special getting in to Ganga water at the vast spread river. Travelling through boat and erforming sraadha at Different Ghats further added to my feeling of her sanctity.
At harichandra ghat I could see dead bodies burning as well as waiting on her bank. Two things I could observe were1. We couldnot feel the burning smell of the bodies there 2. No terror dreams occurred. We had been at Varansi for three days.
During the Loykrothong festival in Thailand, candlelit floats are released into waterways in honoring the Buddaha and the goddess Ganga for good fortune and washing away sins.
6.1 Birth of Ganga
There are several Hindu beliefs that give various versions of the birth of Ganga. According to one version, the sacred water in Brahma's Kamandalu (water-vessel) became personified as a maiden, Ganga. According to another legend, Brahma had reverently washed the feet of Vishnu and collected this water in his Kamandalu. A third version is Ganga was the daughter of Himavan, king of the mountains, and his consort Mena; she was thus a sister of the goddess Parvati. Every version declares that she was raised in the heavens, under the tutelage of Brhama.
6.2 Descent to Earth- Ganga and Bhageeratha
Several years later, a king named Sagara magically acquired sixty thousand sons. Once the King Sagara performed a yagya for the good of the wellbeing of his Kingdom. One of the integral parts of the ritual was a horse , which was stolen by the jealous Indra . Sagara sent his sons all over the earth to search for the horse. They found it in the nether-world next to a meditating sage Kapila. Kapila did not answer the queries of the children's of Sagara being in meditation. Believing that the sage had stolen the horse, sons of Sagara hurled insults at him and caused his penance to be disturbed. The sage opened his eyes for the first time in several years, and looked at the sons of Sagara. With this glance, all sixty thousand were burnt to death.( Throwing a dead snake in to the neck of Kapila is NOT told here)
The souls of the sons of Sagara wandered as ghosts since their final rites had not been performed. When Bhageeratha one of the descendants of Sagara, son of Dilip, learnt of this fate, he vowed to bring Ganga down to Earth so that her waters could cleanse their souls and release them to heaven.
Let me make a small diversion here- 1. One of the important thing told is penace under water. 2. Bhageeratha believed Ganga water can cleanse the souls and release to heaven. Please note- release to heaven, though the sons of Sagara committed an offence.3. If death related functions are not performed the souls become ghosts . These beleifs were there in the times of Bhageeratha himself.
Bhagiratha prayed to Brahma that Ganga come down to Earth. Brahma agreed, and he ordered Ganga to go down to the Earth and then on to the nether regions so that the souls of Bhagiratha's ancestors would be able to go to heaven . Ganga felt that this was insulting and decided to sweep the whole earth away as she fell from the heavens. Alarmed, Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva that he break up Ganga's descent.
6.3 Descent Of Ganga
Ganga arrogantly fell on Shiva's head. But Shiva calmly trapped her in his hair and let her out in small streams. The touch of Shiva further sanctified Ganga. As Ganga travelled to the nether-worlds, she created a different stream to remain on Earth to help purify unfortunate souls there. She is the only river to follow from all the three worlds –Swarga (heaven), Bhoomi (earth) and, patala (neitherworld or hell). Thus she is called "Tripathagâ" ( one who travels the three worlds) in sanskrit language. Shiva Bearing the Descent of the Ganges River as Parvati and Bhagiratha, and the bull Nandi look is depicted in picture form by Raja Ravi varma.
Because of Bhagiratha's efforts Ganga descended on to earth and hence the river is also known as Bhagirathi, and the term "Bhagirath prayatna" is used to describe valiant efforts or difficult achievements. Normally it is a synonium for hard and tough efforts to get achieve some thing difficult.
6.4 Ganga is also called Jahnavi
Another name that Ganga is known by is Jahnavi. Story has it that once Ganga came down to earth, on her way to Bhagiratha, her rushing waters created turbulence and destroyed the fields and the penace of a sage called Jahanu. He was angered by this and drank up all of Ganga's waters. Upon this, the Gods prayed to Jahnu to release Ganga so that she could proceed on her mission. Pleased with their prayers, Jahnu released Ganga (her waters) from his ears. Hence the name "Jahnavi" (daughter of Jahnu) for Ganga.
6.5 Drying of Ganga
It is sometime believed that the river will finally dry up at the end of Kaliyuga (the era of darkness, the current era) just as with the saraswathi river and this era will end. Next in cyclic order will be the Satya yuga or the era of Truth.( This is a new information to me also)
6.6 Ganga mother of Muruga and Ganesha
According to the Hindu scriptures like Skanda purana the goddess Ganga is foster-mother to Murugan, who was actually a son of Shiva and Parvathi.
Parvati who created an image of Ganesha out of her bodily impurities but which became endowed with life after immersion in the sacred waters of the Ganga. Therefore Ganesha is said to have two mothers--Pârvati and Gangâ and hence called Dvaimâtura and also Gângeya (the son of Ganga).
6.7 Ganga originally wife of Vishnu
According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana 2.6.13-95 Vishnu has three wives, who constantly quarrel with each other, so that eventually, he keeps only Lakshmi, giving Ganga to Shiva and Saraswati to Brahma.
6.8 Ashta vasus and Ganga Devi
The Hindu epic, Mahâbhârata tells that the Vasus, cursed by Vashishta had requested Ganga to be their mother. Ganga incarnated and became the wife of King Santanu on condition that at no stage shall he question her actions, or she would leave him.. As seven Vasus were born as their children, one after the other, Ganga drowned them in her own waters( Kindly note the purification) , freeing them from their punishment and the king made no opposition. Only when the eighth was born did the king finally oppose his wife, who therefore left him. So the eighth son, Dyaus incarnated, remained alive, imprisoned in mortal form, and later became known in his mortal incarnation as Bhishma (Devavrata), who is one of the most respected characters of the Mahâbhârata. I have many times posted the legend about Ganga taking human form and not repeating here
6.9 Ganga in Rig Veda
The Ganga is definitely mentioned in the Rig-Veda, the earliest and theoretically the holiest of the Hindu scriptures. The Ganga is mentioned in the nadistuti (Rig Veda 10.75), which lists the rivers from east to west. In RV 6.45.31, the word Ganga is also mentioned, but it is not clear if the reference is to the river.
RV 3.58.6 says that "your ancient home, your auspicious friendship, O Heroes, your wealth is on the banks of the Jahnavi (JahnAvyAm)". This verse could possibly refer to the Ganga. In RV 1.116.18-19, the Jahnavi and the Gangetic dolphin occur in two adjacent verses.
6.10 Ganga in icnography
In the canons of Indian art, Ganga is visualized as voluptuous and beautiful, carrying an overflowing pot in her hand. The vessel conveys the idea of abundant life and fertility, which nourishes and sustains the universe.South Indian temples specially many in Kerala adorn Ganga in the entrance pillar to the temple. Earlier I was wondering who the woman depicted with pot in temples before my extensive reading.
The second distinguishing aspect of Ganga's iconography is her animal mount, which is often shown serving as a pedestal for her. This is the makara, a hybrid creature having the body of a crocodile and the tail of a fish. The makara in Hindu thought corresponds to the star sign of Capricorn in western astrology.
The makara is also the vehicle of the Vedic god of waters, Varuna, thus establishing firmly Goddess Ganga's Vedic roots.
6.11 Ganga Devi
Ganga is affiliated as Devi, on that account most of the rivers as feminine. Taking bath naked in river is considered as sin. Her abode is Kailasa and she is consdered as consort of Shiva in deva form and Santanu in human form. Her mount is makara. Her mantra is "om hili hili mili mili ganga devi namaha"

Every day evening worship is done to her at Varanasi and Haridwar.

Story of Saint Tukaram

Courtesy : Sri.Gopalakrishnan
==========================================
1.Introduction
Tukaram was a great saint who lived only for his God vittala. He faced lot of
difficulties with astonishing patience. He refused diamonds and opals offered by
Shivaji Maharaj himself. His devotional songs are an invaluable contribution to
Marathi spiritual literature.
2. Parents and family
The temple of Pandharinath is situated in the village Dehu on the banks of the
river Indrayani flowing through Hillock Bhandari Hillocks near Pune.
Vishwambhara Buva and his wife Amoobai were in charge of worship at that temple.
In their dynasty Balhoba and Kanakayi were an ideal couple. Kindness, pity and
compassion found a home in their heart. The long-standing family business was
going on briskly. But this couple had no children. They were more worried about
children.
At last the wish of the couple was fulfilled. A male child was born to them. His
name was Shahaji. Thereafter in 1608 another son was born. They named him
Tukaram. After that a girl and a boy Kanhoji were bor.

3.Devotee-Clever In Business
Tukaram was a very sharp and shred boy. By his various activities he was keeping
his parents happy and was hospitable to people visiting the house. Bringing
guests and invitees and serving them made him eager and happy.
Tukaram's radiant eyes, long nose, serene face and courteous talk attracted
everybody. When prayers were sung in the house, boy Tukaram was joined them. He
had a good voice and sang melodiously. People used to be pleased with this.
Tukaram, although engrossed in thoughts of God, he knew the ways of living. He
had great respect for the parents. Balhoba, not willing to burden the earlier
born Shahaji or the still young Kalhaji, thrust it on the clever Tukaram's
shoulder and became a carefree man.
Tukaram's generosity, simplicity and other virtues were inherited from his
parents. He was kind to the poor. Tukaram, by his efficiency and hard work,
improved the business and came to be liked by the customers. From boyhood he
secured a place in the ranks of the big businessmen.
4. Tukaram- family
When Tukaram was thirteen years old his marriage to a girl called Rakhamayi was
celebrated with great pomp. As Rakhamayi was suffering from asthma, sometime
later, a second marriage was performed with Jeejabai belonging to a rich family.
Tukaram had come to know of the conditions of people's life. Looking at the hard
life of the ordinary people, he was grieved. He was thinking of devoting his
life for setting rights the defects and drawbacks in the people's life.
4.Series Of Difficulties
Beautiful wife, handsome income, constant work, beloved of the people-thus,
there was no shortcoming in Tukaram'' life. But amidst his busy life, never did
he overlook remembering God.
Shortly there was a big storm in the life of Tukaram. The parents unexpectedly
passed away. At the same time brother Shahaji became an ascetic and went on
pilgrimage. After some time the sister-in-law died
There was a terrible famine also in the same year. On that account business and
industry became dull. The amounts due to him were not received. There was
intense pressure to pay his debts. On account of this the few articles in the
house were sold. At that time the first wife Rakhamayi and her child died for
want of food.
Numerous difficulties and losses followed one another and fell on him. On
account of this his mind became unbalanced. He lost interest in his family. He
surrendered himself to his venerable God Vittala.
5.Bracelet Received At The House
Jeejabai who had grown up in immense wealth and comfort became dismayed by this
misfortune. However, she made up her mind and got the help and cop-operation of
near relations. She inspired Tukaram, who was clever in business, to resume
business.
Once Jeejabai herself bought some chilies, put them on an ox and sent Tukaram to
the neighbouring village for selling it. Tukaram put down the consignment in the
market, tied the ox to nearby tree and became immersed in contemplation of
Panduranga. Meanwhile, the customers appeared and sought the price of chilies.
"You are sure to know the prevailing price in the town, take the chilies at that
price." On knowing this opinion of the ascetic they fought with one another,
everyone wishing to purchase it. They weighed as they pleased and began taking
away the chilies. Of those who took the chilies, some paid for it, some failed
to pay. On hearing this a few good people of the village came forward, recovered
the amount and paid it
6.The ascetic businessman getting cheated.
When he was returning from the market, on the way, a few unscrupulous persons,
on coming to know that he had money, gave him a brass bracelet describing it as
made of gold and plundered the available money.
Looking at the husband who brought home a brass bracelet, Jeejabai became sad.
She began sobbing with grief. The debt remained unpaid. There was no money for
the next day's business. She began worrying. What next?
7.Dis satisfied Jeejabai
Even then, Tukaram was unperturbed and continued praying. Jeejabai spoke to him
harshly: "Yesterday I got money with great difficulty and gave it to you. You
wasted it all. In future you cannot turn out any work. Let us go begging. You
are already having a tamboora. I will clap in concert. Let Kashi and Mahadeva
accompany us." Tukaram was never losing his patience under any circumstances.
Even now, "what are you saying? What has happened to us to make us beg? Wait a
little. God will set right everything", he said.
"It is the same god who is deceiving you. It is your Vittala who is setting fire
to your business proficiency, cleverness and your wisdom capable of earning
handsome money. How wrongly you are acting! Think it over once. The hunger of
the children is unsatisfied. Stand firmly on earth and pray to God. If you work
hard there will be no dearth of food, clothes, prayer, worship and service to
the guests. If you wanted to be roaming about singing the raise of God, then why
did you marry me?"
"When marrying I was not aware of this. If I were aware, I would not have
married. Your father did not give you in marriage looking at me. He has
considered my wealth and given. Now I have lost my wealth. You may go," said
Tukaram.
"My father might have given me considering your wealth. I am not sorry for the
loss of that wealth. You never keep this in your mind and, everything will be
set right," said Jeejabai.
8.Tukaram changes attention to God
Jeejabai again borrowed money from the lender. She purchased salt out of that
money and sent her husband in the company of efficient businessmen. In the
company of businessmen. Tukaram put the salt on an ox and went out to seek
business. Business was brisk that day. A large amount of money was received.
After concluding business in the market place he was on his way home. On the way
he saw a poor Brahmin who, unable to repay his debts, had been arrested by the
bailiff and was struggling. This struck Tukaram with intense pity. He paid off
the amounts due to the bailiff, spoke words of comfort, pacified and sent the
Brahmin home.
In the same road another Brahmin met Tukaram and humbly asked: "You venerable
saint, my son's "Upanayana' (sacred thread-ceremony) is being celebrated at
home. Please help me for this celebration." Instantly Tukaram gave the balance
of amount available with him and said: "Celebrate your son's thread- ceremony."
Jeejabai came to know of the occurrence. Furiously she was waiting for her
husband's return.
Tukaram, instead of returning home, sat on the Bhamanata hillock in
contemplation of God.
9. Knahoji understand change of Tukaram
Kanhoji heard of his brothers' have given as gift to the Brahmin the money he
earned and hiding in fear of the sister- in- law, and was greatly distressed.
"Truly, my brother, the great man, was not born to run a family. He is a great
man born to cleanse earthly life. We are unnecessarily harassing him. If we
continue to trouble him, it would amount to our troubling the righteousness of
Bhagavatas." "Thinking thus, he went in search of his brother. He was overjoyed
at finding his brother a little further on the Bhamanata hillock, sitting in
contemplation of God.
10 Kanhoji return from ascetic life and look after family
"Dear brother, the righteousness of Bhagavata has to prosper by your service.
You are born only for righteous work. In future, you must work for
righteousness. I will look after the household work to the best of my ability.
Give me my part of the accounts and records of the business. I will look after
the disposition of the part of the money coming to your share." Thus he
expressed his opinion.
The brother took his part of property. Tukaram tied well the documents relating
to his property, threw them into the Indrayani River and went to the hillock
Bhandari.

11 Tukaram return home
"It was wrong on my part to have behaved so harshly with my husband by talking
sarcastically. I hurt his feelings," Jeejabai began to feel. That day,
remembering the husband, she cooked food. She made a food packet for her
husband, and went on her way to Bhandari hillock. Stones and thorns did not
deter her in her eagerness to see Tukaram.
While she was thinking about her future life and how it would shape, a thorn
broke in Jeejabai's foot. The thorn stuck in the sole of the foot. More than he
pain caused by the thorn, the likely hunger of her husband distressed her.
Somehow, dragging her feet, she began to work. On the way an old man came from
the opposite direction. Looking at the sad-faced and limping Jeejabai he said:
"Madam, has a thorn entered your foot?" "Yes, a thorn has stuck", said she.
Instantly, like a person acquainted with her for a long time, the stranger put
Jeejabai's foot on his thigh saying "The thorn has struck deeply", held the
thorn and pulled it out. She was eager to get along. "Mahatma, what is your
name?" she asked. That old man said: "Vittoo". As soon as she heard the sound
"Vittoo" Jeejabai became angry. Without waiting further she left the place. She
went through a slope in the mountain from where the sound "Panduranga,
Panduranga" was heard and there saw her husband.
"You, godly man, is it right for you're to abandon us and live in this hillock?"
asked Jeejabai humbly. TuKkaram, who was immersed in meditation, woke up.' "How
did you come her?" he asked in surprise to her.
"You are my God. You have not eaten food for four or five days. Wash yourself. I
have brought food. Please eat." She opened the food packet, served food to her
husband and herself. Together they both ate to their satisfaction. Both happily
reached home.
12. TuKkaram search for job
That day saint TuKkaram woke up early in the morning bathed and completed
worship and singing in praise of God. "Today I will seek work somewhere," said
he. Hearing such gracious words from her husband, Jeejabai was overjoyed.
While he was walking along the street, Salomala, a bard singing songs in Praise
of God, saw him and said mockingly: "what Tukaji, you wrecked your family and
became a person seeking alms. You destroyed your happy family you did not take
note of the misery of your children. You neglected Jeejabai who contracted debts
neglected Jeejabai who contracted debts running your family. You know nothing of
your own family, who can employ you? Go begging; beggary is the only suitable
employment for you."
When he heard the word `beg', Tukaram suddenly lost his temper. At once his eyes
were filled with teats. "Panduranga, Panduranga," he said and closed his ears.
A man named Jnanoba, on hearing these words said: "Come, Tukaram. There is a
great God who looks after everybody. Tomorrow I am proceeding to Alandi village.
Look after my field till my return." He then showed him the field.
Simultaneously he plucked a juicy sugarcane and said, "Give it to the children,
return in the afternoon to guard the field,' and sent him.
13. Tukaram fail to guard the field
That evening Tukaram came to guard the field of Jnanoba. He looked across the
whole field once. Throughout the field the corns was ripe and ready for
harvesting. Looking at this Tukaram said: "All these are award of Panduranga.
Out of one seed, how much corn has grown! Everything is filled by Panduranga.
Everything is his gracious gift." Saying so he became absorbed in meditation.
Salomalo saw the saint Tukaram, who was absorbed in meditation. Thinking that it
was the proper time for putting him to trouble, he drove the stray cattle of the
town to the field and bolted. Saint Tukaram did not regain consciousness. The
field was mostly destroyed. In fact he too had a share in the crop.
14. Tukkaram getting punished
Jnanoba returned from the village. On hearing that his field had been destroyed
he became grief-stricken. He became angry with Tukaram.
At that time Salomalo came and said: "What, Jnanoba, did you go to the field and
have a look. I told you in advance no to entrust guarding the field to such a
careless fellow. Eat the fruit of your action and questioned his share.
Salomalo abused Tukaram and dragged him to the village headman to seek justice.
For the offence of having spoiled Jnanoba's field Tukaram was directed to make
over his house to Jnanoba. Necessary documents were prepared for the purpose.
15.Corn heap grows by the divinity of Vitala
An uncommon incident occurred at that time. Jnanoba gathered the remaining
stalks left in the field and ears of corn shedding tears. "Every thing is the
play of Panduranga; he himself is our saviour," said he and consoled himself.
Jnaoba cut the stalks, bundled them, prepardet a field and threshed the bundle.
Thinking of Panduranga he made a heap. There was no limit to jnanoba's joy. It
started growing. Setting apart the quantity due to Salomalo, keeping his
portion, he carted the rest to Tukaram's house. Touching Tukaram's feet out of
respect, he humbly said: "Your greatness is immense. Not knowing your helpful
attitude, I a stupid person forced you to make over your house. Pardon me. This
heap of corn, which is more than anticipated, rightly belongs to you."
"Jnanoba, God Vittala, pleased by your devotion, has granted a suitable return,
according to your effort. I have no part in this. Turn round the carts and take
the grain to your home. "The grain in excess of expectation is not mine as it is
not yours," said Tukaram.
Instantly an idea struck Jnanoba. Reserving the heap for the restoration of the
Panduranga temple, which had been built eight generations earlier, keeping one
bag in Tukaram's house, he transported the remaining bags to the temple.
Tukaram gave away as charity the grain kept in his house without leaving even a
grain behind. Poor people, destitute, blind people and lame persons got the
grain and began shouting: "pundarika Varada, Hari Vittala", in praise of God.
16 Again Tukkaram go as Saint
Tukaram now again felt that he should not live in the midst or people. He went
to a cave situated west of the hillock Bhandari and began contemplation. He
began to study the songs composed by Jnaneshwar, Namadeva, and Ekanatha and such
greater saints. Songs began to dance on his tongue. Still he had not obtained
the grace of any Guru. Tukaram felt for it.
17. Tukkaram get blessed by Baba Chaithanya
One night he went to sleep. While sleeping Pandharinnatha himself appeared,
caressed him and said: "Tukaram, do not grieve. You will be initiated by Baba
Chaitanya." Accordingly Baba Chaitanya blessed saint Tukaram at an auspicious
moment on Thursday, tenth day of the month of Magha.

18. Spark of Jealousy from other ascetics
Tow ascetics Salomo and Mumbaji did not like the fame of Tukkaram. Both these jointly approached Dharmadhikari Rameshwara Bhat and complained. Early next morning Innocent Rameshwara Bhat came to the village. He told village head man " I have come here to enquire about Tukaram." "About what?" the village headman asked.
"What, headman, is it not forbidden non-Brahmins read the Vedas, compose prayers songs and preach morality? If the activities of Tukaram continue like this, it will be the end of virtue. I have come here to restore morality. Get that non-Brahmin Tukaram.
The headman got Tukaram. Tukaram made obeisance to Dharmadhikari Rameswara Bhat and waited.
Dharmadhikari said-Is there any place where non-Brahmins read Vedas, compose songs of prayer and preach to people? I am pardoning you for having committed mistakes so far in ignorance. Don't do such things in future."
"Panduranga himself has ordered me to complete some incomplete songs composed by saint Namadeva. If you do not approve I will stop it." Said submissive Tukkaram.
"Stop it, stop it."
If so, what should I do with the poems completed so far?"
"Bundle them up and throw them into Indravani river,' was the harsh order of Rameshwara Bhat. Following Dharmadhikari's order, Tukaram bundled the palm leaf manuscripts of the songs composed by him and immersed it in the Indrayani River.
19. Palm leaf scripts get returned
An extraordinary incident again occurred during the period. After twelve days, Lord Panduranga appeared in a dream before Tukaram and said: "At dawn tomorrow the songs you have drowned in the Indrayani river will come floating. Collect it back. Don't worry." On the thirteenth day at sunrise, copies of the songs came floating one over the other.
20Jijabai get rejoiced on Chatrpati Shivaji invitation
Chatrpati Shivaji Maharaj came to know that in his kingdom there was a famous saint, a person free from all worldly desires. Immediately he sent some ministers, public men and royal entourage to bring him in a procession with umbrella and fans and seated on a chariot.
The town was filled with joy. Jeejabai was overjoyed. " What more are we likely to need in future! We have the patronage of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Goddess Sarvamangala did not let us down finally. "So saying, she went inside the house, lit the lamp and prostrated.
As the retinue of the Maharaj approached his house Tukaram was surprised. "How highly Chatrapati honour me by sending his retinue to ascetic like me! The maharaja's magnanimity, piety and aid are noble." The ministers arrived, place excellent clothing at these feet and invited him to the place.
21Tukaram refuse gifts from Maharaj Shivaji
The ascetic smiled and said: "Why does an ascetic need all these clothes? Please take them and return them to the Maharaja."
"Wait, wait; you should not reject wealth which come to your doorstep. Honourable ministers are giving those clothes," said Jeejabai coming forward.
"By gifts from the people our poverty will not end. Only if Lord Vittala himself grants it, will we be satisfied. Don't aspire for this," said Tukaram to his wife. The ascetic blessed and said: "Gentlemen, return these gifts and my books of songs to the Maharaja and convey my thanks."
Shivaji Maharaj read the songs sent with Tukaram's blessings, and was overjoyed. He kept them on his head and danced with joy. "Today I am blessed my country is blessed," so saying, he himself went to meet that great saint.
22. Shivaji Maharaj calls on Tukaram and gain inspiration
Without any previous intimation Chatrapti Shivaji Maharaj came to meet the saint. He prostrated at the feet of the great sage Tukaram and requested: "By accepting the small gift of this devotee, you must please bless him."
In view of the diamonds, opals, pearls, gems, numerous types of clothing put in gold vessels and offered to him, and Jeejabai's mind began to be excited. She felt like running forward and grabbing them. Meanwhile Tukaram said: "O! Maharaj, of what use are these diamonds and opals to a poor ascetic? If they are held in the Maharaja's treasury, the poor will benefit. The kingdom will prosper. People will become righteous."
With great respect Shivaji Maharaja Prayed: "For your worshipping God at least take four villages as a present. This is my humble offering."
Maharaj, do not worry about me. Decaying Hindu morality, the growth of India and salvation has to be your concern. This is the wish of Lord Vittala also. Achieve it. This is the gift I seek."
On hearing these words of Tukaram the Maharaja's inner renunciation glowed. The affairs of state were unwanted. He wished to attain his object by serving the ascetic.
On hearing shivaji Maharaj's intention, Tukaram said: " Duty is better than penance. Failure to do one's duty results in loss of what life stands for now or after death. Therefore continue your rule of the kingdom more actively," said the solemnly.
Shivaji Maharaj bowed and said, "Let me have your kind blessings. I will go to my palace to day not as a king but as a servant of the people
23 Last Journey of Tukaram
Saint Tukaram by his immoral voice sowed the seeds of devotion in the people's heart, simplified the foundation of morality and conveyed it to the people. A number of people were moved by the pious songs composed by him and became his disciples. His songs were on the lips of the learned and the ordinary people. They became a valuable heritage of the disciples.
Tukaram wished to end his mortal activities. Sri Hari also granted his wish. One day Tukaram told his disciples: "My mortal activities have come to an end. I am leaving. Live happily. Serve others. Take care of innocent Jeejabai," and blessed them.
He came home and asked Jeejabai: " I am on my way to heaven. I will take you. Will you come along?" She said: "How can I leave behind the children and family members and cattle can calves and come with you?'
Tukaram went into the Indrayani River as if he was about to take a bath and went forward. Once he entered the river he was not visible again. They say that within a few minutes his rug, the cymbals in his hand and the tamboora fell down. The citizens bowed in reverence saying that Tukaram bodily went to heaven. Tukaram died in about 1650. He was then 42 years old.

Fwd: FW: [SUMADHWASEVA] SURYA GRAHANA ON 15.01.2010

Surya Grahana on 15.01.2010

Shubha Phala – Mesha, simha, vrushchika and Meena Rashi

Mishra Phala – Vrushabha, Karka, kanyaa, dhanu

Ashubha phala – Mithuna, tula, makara, kumba rashi

Vishesha Ashubha phala – Uttarashada Nakshatra & Makara Rashi

Grahana Sparsha Time 11.05am (IST)

Madhya Kaala – 1.14 pm

Grahana Moksha Time 3.38pm (IST)

  1. On Grahana day –  We must not do panchamrutha, phalasamarpane and Hastodaka, to yathigalu, as the Yathigalu will be on fasting on this day.

  2. We can take food upto 9.22 pm on 14.1.2010

  3. Vedarambha starts @ 9.22 pm on 14.1.2010

  4. On 15.1.2010 Morning nothing to be taken.

  5. Grahana period is termed as "Parva kaala".  As such, one can get upadesha of various mantraas during the period, and if it is done, it will have more significance and have siddhi.

  6. Shraddha if it is falling on 15.1..2010 can be done on

  7. Vedarambha period is the period from which we are not supposed to take anything whether it is liquid/solid.   From this period as the Grahana dosha starts, whatever we eat will be converted as germs and spoils our food.    Another important thing is that by that time the real grahana starts, our stomach to be empty.

  8. Why we are keeping Darba on all the items during Grahana? -   Darba is born from the body of Varaha devaru.   In Darba, there is sannidhana of Srihari, Brahma and Rudradevaru.  So, Darba is always pure.    During Grahana, all these items like milk, curds, vegetables, which are being kept will loose their power and becomes unusable.  But with the use of Darba being kept on these items, their shuddatwa will be maintained and one can use the same after Grahana also.

  9. Kethugrasta Chandra Grahana -  & Rahugrasta Surya Grahana. Who is Kethu and who is Rahu? During  Samudra Mathana,  when Mohini roopi Srihari was distributing the amrutha, one daithya by name Svarbhanu,  came in a disguise and sat among the devate's row.   Srihari gave him Amrutha also.  At that time Sun and Moon, on seeing that Swarbhanu has come in Devate's row and taking amrutha, complained to Mohini, when Srihari through his Sudarshana removed the head of that daithya.  Actually that daithya had done penance asking for Amrutha to be falling to his mouth.  As such, Srihari had allowed Amrutha to be swallowed upto its mouth, but it didn't enter beyond mouth, Srihari had removed his head.  As such, the head of the daithya was fixed to a snake's body to become "Rahu", and the other portion without head is called as "Kethu".   To take a revenge on Surya Chandraru,  Rahu tries to swallow Surya and Kethu tries to swallow Moon during Surya Grahana and Chandra Grahana respectively.  That is why the eclipses are termed as Rahugrasta Suryagrahana and Kethugrasta Chandragrahana.

  10. We must take bath once when the Grahana starts (sparsha) and once when the grahana ends (moksha).  Snaana done at the beginning of Grahana gets phala which is equal to Laksha tirtha snaana and mokshanantara snaana gets you phala which is termed as "ananta" (uncountable).

  11. Homa and shanthi done during Grahana period gets phala which is more than crore time phala.

  12. Even those who are observing soothaka also must observe Grahana snaana.

  13. Even the Rajaswala ladies must observe Grahana snaana.

  14. While doing sparsha snaana, we must do the snaana with the clothes we are wearing in.

  15. Tarpana during Grahana Madhya kaala : – Tarpanaadhikarigalu must give tarpana to sarva pitrugalu during madhyakaala of grahana.  This will fetch us punya equal to samasta bhoodhana.   The pitru devategalu, if Tarpana is done, will get drop of amrutha during the period.

  16. During Grahana we must do daanaas – Godaana, Suvarna Daana, Bhoodana, dhaanya dhaana  (yathaashakthi. )

  17. Milk, curds, vegetables, water and other items are free from Grahana dosha provided a kusha (darbe) is kept on the items.   But baked items are not free from grahana dosha, even though darbe is kept on them.

  18. Two days prior and two days after Grahana are Varjya for "Shubha Kaarya".

  19. Tarpana during Grahana period

  20. During Grahana period do as much japa as possible, do paarayana of Vayustuthi, Rayara Stotra, Sumadhwa Vijaya, etc (depending upon the time available).  Those who does not know Rayara Stotra,  and ladies atleast then can chant the following mantra :

harE raama harE raama raama raama harE harE |

harE kRiShNa harE kRiShNa kRiShNa kRiShNa harE harE |

Ladies can chant Madhwanaama, sing devaranamagalu, they can do guru mantra, etc. Grahana dosha pariharaartha stotra to be chanted
