Nair's disguise as a brahmin - joke

A story going round my native village in Kerala in the 1930's was that a Nair, seeing the generosity of the thampurattis towards Brahmin beggars, once persuaded a Brahmachaari to take him along. The Brahmachaari made the Nair dress up with mundu and thorthu, put a brand new fake poonal on him; and both went out on their rounds wearing broad vibhoothi pattais on their foreheads, and rudraaksha malais round their necks..

At the first house they came to, the Brahmachaari called out:|-

ഭവതി ഭിക്ഷാന്ദേഹി. ( Bhavati bhikshan dehi)The Brahmin housewife came out and poured out some husked rice into the Brahmachaari's uttareeyam.

Thereupon his companion called out:|-

ഞാനും അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ, ( Gnaanum anganaa tanne) causing consternation all round.
