Magha Pournami - Lalita Jayanti
A verse from Devyaparadha Kshamapana Stotram
विधेरज्ञानेन द्रविणविरहेणालसतया
विधेयाशक्यत्वात्तव चरणयोर्या च्युतिरभूत् ।
तदेतत् क्षन्तव्यं जननि सकलोद्धारिणि शिवे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति ॥
O Mother, please forgive me as I lost your feet due to lack of knowledge of ways of worship, due to lack of wealth and the means that wealth can provide for worship and even if all of them are there, due to my laziness and not performing duties. You are the up-lifter of all those fallen and the one who graces auspiciousness on everyone. A bad son might be there, but there will be no bad mother.
In explanation of this verse, Swami Maheshananda Giri of Dakshinamurty Math, Varanasi says -
Just like knowledge, money and the means are there for performing any karma or worship, similarly, these are all there for knowledge based worship too. Śruti has stated - 'श्रोतव्यो मन्तव्यः' But how to do śravaṇam? I do not know how to do śravaṇam and mananam. And the means (wealth) required i.e., sādhana catushṭaya sampatti is absent (विरह). Even if one gets a Guru and does śravaṇam there might be lack of various means like viveka, vairāgya etc.
We are so much engrossed in our pancha-koshas that we are unable to remove our identity with them. Even if we understand a little bit after śravaṇa-manana, we couldn't remove the samskāras that bind us to the pancha-koshas. We are unable to do विधेय - the ज्ञाननिष्ठा after श्रवण-मनन. We do not understand even the वाच्यार्थ that the pure power that resides in our hearts is the cause of all. Then how do we get the लक्ष्यार्थ ? So because of this I couldn't hold on (च्युति) to your feet and fall again and again.
Please forgive my constant loosing of your feet because you are सकलोद्धारिणि शिवे . Your nature is to uplift all the jīvas and drive them to the paramātmā. It is your nature to grace auspiciousness on all of us. This form of मुमुक्षुता you have taken in me, keep strengthening it and keep forgiving my mistakes.
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति - A mother takes care of her children even if they do not care for her. O mother, due to our indulgence in the samsāra, we are not doing what we ought to do for you, but you are constantly taking care of us. So you are never a कुमाता but we are कुपुत्र. Please forgive us.
