understand at least one Shloka of Adi Shankara - HH.Bharati Teertha Mahaswamigal

Short Messages from Sringeri Jagadgurus:

Sringeri Jagadguru explains We must try to understand at least one Shloka of Adi Shankara (Tamil):

(a rough translation)

Some people ask whether the teachings (Upadeshas) of Adi Shankaracharya are applicable for the modern age. Further, one person mentioned that we are currently living in the 21st century. For people belonging to this century, to what extent do the teachings of Bhagavatpada Adi Shankara given 1200 years ago be applicable?

I told him that the teachings of Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya are not only applicable for this age but will be applicable even after 1000 years.

For instance, Adi Shankara in one of His teachings had instructed us on what we should pray to Bhagavan (God) for. He said that in our prayers, we must:

1. Pray to remove our ego
2. Pray to remove our desires
3. Pray that we cultivate compassion
4. Pray that we cross the ocean of Samsara

This prayer must not only be done now but even after 1000 years. Only then will our lives be meaningful (saarthakam). In this way, He has given many instructions and teachings to illuminate the path of welfare for all of us. Even if we adhere to one of His instructions, we will be immensely benefited.

The Jagadguru further said that one cannot forego duties when in the midst of problems, but pray to the Lord. That is why Bhagavan said to Arjuna.

तस्मात्सर्वेषु कालेषु मामनुस्मर युध्य च ।
(Hence remember Me at all times and fight)

It is not right to simply sit in prayer (and not perform your duties). Neither would it be appropriate to forget God completely.

It is with this background that Sri Adi Shankaracharya has asked us to pray in the manner as stated above. Hence, we would do well to reflect upon at least one of His instructions and put it into practice.
