श्लोक: — शतं विहाय (विधुर नीतिः)

शतं विहाय भोक्तव्यं सहस्रं स्नानमाचरेत्
लक्षं विहाय दातव्यं कोटिं त्यक्त्वा हरिं भजेत्

पदपरिचय:

द्वितीयाशतं सहस्रं लक्षं कोटिं  हरिं स्नानम्क्रियापदम्भोक्तव्यं (तव्यत्) आचरेत् (लोट्) दातव्यं (तव्यत् प्रत्यय: ) भजेत् (लोट् लकार: )  विहाय (ल्यप् प्रत्यय: ) त्यक्त्वा  (क्त्वा प्रत्यय: )

प्रतिपदार्थ:

शतम् = 100  (hundred)

विहाय = giving up

भोक्तव्यम् = enjoyment has to be done

सहस्रम् = 1,000 (thousand)

स्नानमाचरेत् = bathing has to be done  (in sacred waters)
लक्षम् = 1,00,000 (lakh)

विहाय = giving up

दातव्यम् = charity has to be done

कोटिम् = 1,00,00,000 (crore)

त्यक्त्वा = giving up

हरिम् = Lord Krishna (Hari)

भजेत् = is to be worshipped.

तात्पर्यम्

Abandon or spend a hundred and eat your food, spend a thousand and take a bath, spend a lakh and give charity, and giving up 1 crore and remember God. (First one provides happiness to the body, the second one obtains punya for the happiness beyond the body, the third one is for the happiness of others and the fourth one is for eternal happiness).

(Another perspective is to consider the number to indicate the count of tasks that are to be given up:  Having abandoned a 100 things, eat; having abandoned a 1000 jobs, perform ablutions; having abandoned 100,000 chores, give charity; having abandoned a crore tasks, serve the Lord).

This sloka reminds us of the Tamil Poet Avvaiyar, who wrote "4 crores songs" in 4 verses with each verse indicating an action that is worth a crore, namely, (1) not entering the house of those who do not give respect, (2) not eating in the house where the host do not demonstrate hospitality, (3) having friendship only with good people even if offered a crore and (4) controlling the tongue even if offered many crores.

அவ்வையார் நூல்கள் – நாலு கோடிப் பாடல்கள்

ஔவையார் ஒரு சமயம் சில புலவர்களைக் காணச் சென்றபோது அப்புலவர்கள் கவலைதோய்ந்த முகத்தோடு காணப்படவே அதன் காரணத்தை வினவினார்.

"நாளைப் பொழுது விடிவதற்குள் நான்கு கோடிப் பாடல்கள்" இயற்றவேண்டும் என மன்னவன் ஆணையிட்டுள்ளான். அதனால் தான் கவலையடைந்துள்ளோம்" என்று அவர்கள் கூறினராம்.

இதைக்கேட்ட ஔவையார், "இவ்வளவுதானா, இதற்காகவா கவலை கொண்டுள்ளீர்கள்" என்று கூறி கோடி என்ற வார்த்தையை அடக்கிய 4 பாடல்களைக் சொன்னார். இதுவே நாலு கோடிப் பாடல்கள் எனப்படும்.

"மதியாதார் முற்றம் மதித்தொரு கால்சென்று
மிதியாமை கோடி பெறும்"

"உண்ணீர் உண்ணீரென்று உபசரியார் தம்மனையில்
உண்ணாமை கோடி பெரும்"

"கோடி கொடுப்பினும் குடிப்பிறந்தார் தம்முடனே
கூடுதலே கோடி பெறும்"

"கோடானு கோடி கொடுப்பினுந் தன்னுடைநாக்
கோடாமை கோடி பெறும்"
