Dear All,
Greetings and Namaste. As Mahashivaratri falls on Tuesday (17-Feb-2015), I am happy to share a very rare Sahasranama on Lord Mahakaleshwara of Ujjain, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This Sahasranama was given to Sudama (Kushela) by Lord Krishna at former's request who enquired which Sahasranama should be used for performing Archana to Lord Shiva with Bilva leaves. This is said to be from Sri Prakrishtanandoktagama.
I will be failing in my duty if I don't thank Sri. Sivakumar Thyagarajan from Dubai who sourced this Sahasranama from his contacts. He has also managed to source a few other texts not in print for me and I will share some of them in due course. In fact we are working together to source yet another rare Sahasranama on Lord Shiva of Thirukodikaval (a famous Shiva Kshetra near Kumbhakonam - where Lord Shiva absolves the three crores of Mantras from the curse of Sage Agastya). Thanks will be too cheap an utterance for this invaluable service by Sri Sivakumar. Thank you once again.
This Phalashruti of this Sahasranama is very elaborate and specific benefits are given for chanting this hymn at various places in Ujjain. Please refer to the preface for a brief description on the benefits. (As an aside, like Kanchi, Ujjain (formerly known as Avanti), apparently was a land of thousand temples once upon a time with Mahakaleshwara temple being the main one. Currently there are about 100+ temples and I had darshan in about a dozen). Sage Sandipani Ashram is on the outskirts of this city where Lord Krishna and Sudama had their tutelage. Unlike other places, Vamachara is in active practice by many there, I was told. People offer toddy to Lord Kalabhairava. Skanda Purana devotes one entire Canto to Avanti and all its sacred places (I shares some hymns from this volume in the past including the other Kalabhairavashtakam).
It is mentioned that one who recites this on the day of Shivaratri for 100 times (while fasting) gets all desires fulfilled. May we pray to Lord Shiva with this Sahasranama on Maha Shivaratri day! Those who could perform archana with Bilwa leaves with this sahasranama will be the most blessed ones.
