Karunya Stavam (Brahma Puranam)- An Exquisite Hymn

Courtesy : Sri.Krishnan Muralidharan
Dear All,

Greetings. I have pleasure in sharing a rare, exquisite and very potent Stuti titled Karunya Stavam from Brahma Puranam, Chapter 49. The hymn was created by Indradyumna on Lord Vishnu and seeks Lord's mercy on him (and hence the name Karunya Stavam).

Indraduyman beautifully explains the various phases of his Atma's journey - from creatures to humans going in and out of Svarga and Naraka. I have endeavored to give a brief translation (excerpts only) to the best of my limited faculty in Sanskrit. The Phalashruti of the hymn stands embodiment to the sacredness and potency of this hymn.

Though there are innumerable hymns on Bhagavan seeking his blessings, I am honestly wonderstruck by the beauty and currency of the hymn. It is everyone's journey and each one of us can identify with the description of the journey of Jeevatma. The pleasures and sorrows described are our own as well and the prayer can't be more apt than unto ourselves. A leisurely and repeated deliberation on the hymn, its meaning and its import could perhaps make a profound change in our attitude to life!

On a personal note, I would think the following set of hymns could make a very good combination for those in pursuit of Lord's Grace/Emancipation:

1. Karunya Stavam - attached - seeking Lord's Grace/mercy
2. Vairagya Panchakam by Swami Vedanta Desikar - seeking Vairagya in one's pursuit
3. Dhi Shuddhi Stotram by Srimad Vadiraja - seeking mental hygiene from Lord Hayagriva
4. Shatpadi Storam - By Adi Shankara - seeking constancy of one's prayers
5. Yogasara Vishnu Stotram - from Padma Purana (I had shared this in Dec 2011) - seeking Vishnu Yoga, the fruit of Vishnu Bhakti.

May Lord Bless us all!
