Dear All,
Greetings and Namaste. Sri Kalki Jayanti falls on Monday, 17-Sep-2012. In that connection, I am happy to share a couple of rare hymns on Lord Vishnu.
1. Sri Sampatkumara Ashtottara Shata Namavali - This is a rare 108 names of Lord Sampatkumara (Lord Selvapillai in Tamil) which presumably is the Ashtottaram on the Mulvar of Melkote Thirunaraynapuram Temple in Karnataka (near Mandya). This was taken from a 130-year old Telugu manuscript and my sincere thanks goes to Sri. Haranath Jayanti, my colleague's father, who helped in transliterating the same from the manuscript. There is a possibility that there may some errors in the original script itself.

2. Sri Kalki Stotram - Kalki Puranam - This is one of the few stotrams on Lord Kalki as given in Chapter 7 of Kalki Puranam. As can be seen from the Phalashruti, this is an effective hymn to ward off all evils and beget all benefits.
As usual, a few snippets on the topic:
- Since Kalki Avatar is yet to happen (for this Chaturyuga), one might wonder what would be the context of this Purana (which normally narrates the past. There are two possible explanations and I leave it to the individuals to choose one that they feel more appealing. The first is that this Purana is actually prognosticative in nature (i.e. it predicts future) and the second could be that several Kalki Avatars would have happened in the bygone Chaturyugas and this could be a delineation of the past Kalki Avatar. We can cite illustrations for both:
- From the prognostication perspective, almost every Puran contains illustration of how Kali Yuga will be (e.g Bhagavatam, Vishnu Puranam, Bhavishya Puranam, etc. One will be wonderstruck how accurate some of the predictions are (some added below).
- From the past narration perspective - Varaha Avatar as happened in different Manvataras are given different purans. Similarly Varaha Puran contains details of various forms of Lord Kartikeya and Brahma Vaivarta Purana (and Mudkala Purana) on various forms of Lord Vinayaka. There is also a Tamil poem attributed to Sage Kaka Bhujandar that he has seen hundreds of Ramas and Krishnas in his lifetime. It is up to us to take it or leave it.
- Kalki Puran explains the situation in which Kalki Avara happened (or when it happens):
- At the time of Pralaya, Lord Brahma created Adharma as the embodiment of all sins. One who listens to the story of Adharma gets absolved of all sins.
- Adharma's wife was mithyA (lust). The couple had a son known as dambha (embodiment of anger) and daughter known as mAyA. From the womb of mAyA, dambha created a son known as lobha and daughter nikRRiti. By the conjugation of lobha and niRRiti, a son known as krodha and a daughter known as himsA were born. Between krodha and himsA, kali was born. Kali also had a sister named durukti with whom he had two children named bhaya(son) and mRRityu (daughter).Bhaya and mRRityu gave birth to niraya (son) and yAtanA (daughter). Thousands were the children of niraya and yAtana who embodied the Kali yuga. (On the lighter side - too many incest stories - sorry, just kidding!!)
- When Kali wanders in this world - people become lustful (kAmuka), kill their own father/mother, Brahmins (the varna, not today's caste) abdicate Vedas to become extremely poor and end up in the servitude of the lowly. Yajnopavita (Upanayana ceremony for trivarna) does not happen at the right time (or does not happen), they sell meat and perform pet puja (worship of stomach); they always set eye on other ladies illicitly (parastrI); the life of humans becomes 16 years; they become very engaged in vivAda (jagadA) and kalaha; sannyasis will adopt grihastha life (meaning they will not be celibate); people will cast aspersions on own preceptors (Gurus) Men and women marry by mutual consent only; rich are counted as Sadhus; Brahmins are left only with Yajnopavita and nothing else; the only residual identification of Sannyasi is Danda (the stick). People occupy the banks of river as rivers become dry; lands grow less and less; ladies talk like traders and go after material/conjugal pleasures ignoring their own husbands. Brahmins go after the food of others and even do Purohita for Chandalas....
- The above are the characteristics of Kaliyuga, First part (prathama pAda). In second part, no one chants Lord Krishna's name. In third phase, the varnas start vanishing/mixing. In fourth part, all varnas become one and no one prays Lord Vishnu. All devatas like svAhA, svadhA, vaShaT, oMkAra, etc. become devoid of their divine food (havis). They all go to the feet of Lord Brahma. All start prayer on Lord Vishnu to end this calamity by taking Kalki Avatar (Then the Kalki Avatar's full description in tens of chapters follows).
As an aside, a friend of mine sent me some links which I found interesting.
