About the word उपदेश in Paninian Grammar
         While studying the rules of Sanskrit grammar we usually find this word उपदेश.  What does this mean?  Let us try to understand it in simple. Here उप denotes the meaning आद्य (primitive/foremost) and root दिश् means उच्चारणम् (utterance, declaration). आद्यानाम् उच्चारणम् = आद्योच्चारणम् means the utterance or declaration of foremost Grammarians such as Panini, Katyayana, Vararuchi etc.
        What are those उपदेशा's? For this question there are two verses which answer it. Such as
      
      1.  प्रत्ययाः शिवसूत्राणि आदेशा आगमास्तथा ।
            धातुपाठो गणपाठश्च उपदेशाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।।
     ¤    प्रत्ययाः = suffixes
     ¤    शिवसूत्राणि = Fourteen rules by Lord Maheshwara.
     ¤    आदेशाः = Substitutes.
     ¤    आगमाः = A grammatical augment, a syllable or letter inserted in any part of the radical word.
     ¤    धातुपाठः =  ancient list of roots.
     ¤    गणपाठः = Collection of words following the same grammatical rule.

       2. धातुसूत्रगणोणादिवाक्यलिङ्गानुशासनम् ।
            आगमप्रत्ययादेशाः उपदेशाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥
      ¤    धातुः – Root of the verbal form/A verbal root. (भू, गम्, पच् etc).
      ¤    सूत्रम् – Rules. (हलन्त्यम्, वृद्धिरादैच् etc.)
      ¤    गणः – Set of words (अजादिगणः, भ्वादिगणः etc.).
      ¤    उणादिः – Rules composed by शाकटायन.
      ¤    वाक्यम् – Sentence.
      ¤    लिङ्गानुशासनम् – Rules on the gender/explanation of gender.
      ¤    आगमः – An augment (letters which are inserted or added).
      ¤    आदेशः – A substitute.
      ¤    प्रत्ययः – A suffix.
