How to manage a variety of people?
लुब्धमर्थेन गृह्णीयात् स्तब्धमञ्जलिकर्मणा ।
मूर्खं छन्दोऽनुवृत्तेन यथार्थत्वेन पण्डितम् ।। CN
Meaning: A greedy person has to be won over by (paying) money; a stubborn person by folding hands; a fool by playing to his tune and a learned person by truthful dealing.
Explanation: An old text names Chanakya-Niti is quite popular among Indian readers. Chanakya was the legendary minister for the king Chandragupta of the Gupta dynasty. He is credited to have established the Mauryan empire with Chandragupta as the first king. His personal life was an extremely simple and pious one. However he gave practical, sometimes crooked tips to the king in the interest of the kingdom. The present verse is from his book. A worldly wise person is also called street-smart and a go-getter. He manages different types of people differently. He wins over a miserly person by money. This can be in any form – it can be in form of expensive gifts or money.
Some people are stubborn and head-strong. Such person too can be won over by show of proper courtesies, even in excess. The poet actually says anjali, which means salutation by folding hands, which is usually done by a student to the teacher or a son to the parent.
A foolish person, if one is forced to deal with, has to be allowed his foolishness to some extent. This may be particularly needed in the case of a foolish boss.
Finally, a learned man can be won over only by honest and truthful interaction. There is no need for crookedness here. Crookedness may boomerang.
