Contentment and dispassion are inborn in His Holiness. The following incident took place during His pre-sanyasa days when He was serving His Guru, His Holiness Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamigal as a brahmacharin.
One day, a devotee visited Sringeri along with his family and had darshan of His Holiness. While conversing with Acharyal, they expressed their desire to present a few vastras to Sri Seetharama Anjaneyalu. His Holiness said, "He doesn't accept gifts. Anyway I shall call Him and you can see for yourselves." He then sent for His disciple. As soon as the young brahmacharin arrived, His Guru said, "These people have come from Bangalore. They have brought some vastras for Your use. They would like You to accept them."
The disciple politely replied, "I have an adequate number of vastras with Me and therefore require no more." His Holiness looked at the devotees, smiled and then again turned towards His disciple and said, "They ardently desire to offer You these vestments. Why don't You accept them?" On hearing His Guru's words, the disciple said with obvious discomfiture, "Even if I were to accept the dhotis, I cannot wear them, since they have zari (woven gold) on them."
The visitors left awe-struck at the young boy's strict adherence to a simple and principled lifestyle.
Sri Gurubhyoh Namaha!!
