Once there was a devotee who wanted to perform Sahasra Bhojanam (samaradhanai for 1000 Veda Brahmins), but there was no way he could afford it.
He was going pale with the thought of being unable to fulfill his ambition.
One day Periyava enquires about this and said "can I suggest a way you can fulfill your ambition". Devotee was exhilarated..
Periyava said "Take 2 or 3 kgs of rice, stove (குமிட்டி) and vessel to cook rice, go to Thirugokarnam (this is a great Shiva Kshetram near Pudukottai on way to Trichy).
In this temple there is a pool of water in between rocks (சுனை in Tamil) above the temple.
Do snanam in the pond, cool the rice and then take a small pinch of cooked rice and feed the fishes in the pond. When offering every pinch recite one name of Vishnu Sahasranama.
That way you will offer 1000 pinches of rice, which is Sahasra Bhojanam)".
The devotee followed the instructions and came back to Periyava, with tears rolling down his cheeks and asked if he can understand the mystery behind this.
Periyava said that it is said in Thirugokarna kshetram Rishis are in the form of fishes in the pond and this devotee has performed Sahasra Bhojanam to the rishis."
