Kankadhara stotram with English translation

Kanakadhaaraa sthothram

 

1. angam hareH pulaka bhooshaNam aasrayanthee

    bhrngaanganaa ive mukulaabharaNam thamaalam

    angeekrtha akhila vibhoothiH apaangaleelaa

    maangalyadhaa asthu mama mangala dhevathaayaaH

 

May the playful glance of Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of all things auspicious, which resorts to the limbs of Lord Hari, which are adorned with horripilation, like a female bee to the Thamala tree adorned with buds and which is in accordance with all the glory of the Lord, bestow auspiciousness to me.

 

apaanga leelaa- the playful glance,( apaanga is the  sidelong glance)

 

mangala dhevathayaaH- the Goddess of all things auspicious(Mahalakshmi)

 

aaSrayanthee- that which resorts to(adjective to the glance)

 

hareH angam- the limbs of Lord Hari,

 

pulakabhooshaNam- adorned with horripilation ( may be due to the glances of Mahalskshmi)

 

bhrngaanaganaa iva- like a female bee (glances are compared to a female bee because of their darkcolour)

 

(aaSraynthee- resorts to)

 

thamaalam – the Thamala tree ( The Lord is compared to the thamala tree due to His dark green hue)

 

mukulaabharaNam – which is adorned with buds

 

asthu- be

 

maangalayadhaa- giver of auspiciousness

 

mama- for me.

 

Lakshmi looking at her Lord creates pulakaankitha for Him also

 

2. mugDhaa muhuH vidhaDhathi vadhane muraareH

    premathrapaa praNihithaani gathaagathaani

    maalaadhrSoH maDhukaree iva mahothpale yaa

    saa me Sriyam dhiSathu saagarasambhavaayaaH

 

May that beautiful  glance of the daughter of the ocean, which causes garland of loving and bashful glances  that go and come towards the face of Lord Murari, like the female bee that goes to the large blue lotus and returns continuously, may bring me prosperity.

Sriyam- prosperity

 

The blue lotus is compared to the face of the Lord and the beeis compared to the glance of Lakshmee. Continuous going and coming of the glances at the face creates an impression of a garland of the glances.

 

3.aameelithaaksham adhigamya mudhaa mukundham

   aanandha kandham animesham anangathanthram

   aakekarasThitha kaneenika pakshma nethram

   bhoothyai bhaveth mama bhujangaSayaanganaayaaH

 

May the eye of Mahlakshmi, the consort of the Lord who reclines on the serpent Sesha, which, reaching the Lord Mukunda, who has half-closed His eyes out of joy, and which is full of love, without batting the eyelids, the source of joy  and with eye balls and eyelashes half closed, secure my well being.

 

aakekarasThitha kaneenika pakshmanethram- the eye (nethram) with is half closed (akeekarasThitha) eyeballs ( kaneenika) and eyelashes (pakshma)

bhujangaSayaanganaayaaH-of Mahalakshmi who is the consort of the Lord who reclines on serpent bed

adhigamya – which on reaching

mukundham- Lord Mukundha

aameelithaaksham- whose eyes are half closed

mudhaa – due to joy,

animesham- do not batt

aanandha kanDham- and  a source of joy

anangathanthram – and which are the ploy of cupid

bhaveth- may be

mama bhoothyai- for my welfare

 

 

 

 

4. baahvanthre maDhujithaH Srithakousthubhe yaa

    haaraavaleeva harineelamyee vibhaathi

    kaamapradhaa bhagavathoapi kataakshamaalaa

    kalyaaNam aavahathu me kamalaalayaayaaH

 

May the garland of the glance  of Lakshmi who dwells in lotus, which shines like a necklace made of blue sapphire on the chest of the slayer of Madhu adorned with the gem kousthubha, which is desirable even to the Lord, give me the blessing.

kamalaalayaayaaH- of Lakshmi who resides in lotus,

 

vibhaathi- shines

 

haaraavaleeiva- like a necklace

 

harineelamayee- made of blue sapphire  (the glances dark in colour look like blue sapphire and the frequent glances make a necklace on the chest of the Lord.

 

baahvanthare- between the arms, that is His chest,

 

Srithakousthubhe- adorned with Kousthubhagem,

 

maDhujithaH- of the slayer of maDhu, Lord Narayana,

 

kaamapradha, which creates love

 

bhavatho api -even to the Lord

5. kaalaambudhaali lalithorasi kaitabhaareH

    DhaaraaDhare sphurathi yaa thadidhanganeva

    maathussamastha jagathaam mahaneeya moorthiH

    bhadhraaNi ma dhaiSathu bhaargavanandhanaayaaH

 

May the glorious form of Mahalakshmi, the mother of the universe, who was the daughter of Brgu, who shines like a lightning  among the clouds on the chest of the enemy of the demon Kaitabha, Vishnu, which is beautiful and blue like the rainbearing cloud, shower blessings on me.

 

mahaneeya moorthiH- The glorious form,

 

bhaargavanandhnaayaaH-  of Mahalakshmi who was the daughter of Bhrgu ,

 

Vishnu purana says that Mahalaksmi was the daughter of sage Bhrgu, mind-born  from Brahma and Khyathi , his wife. Due to a curse she resorted to the milky ocean, from where she emerged as Mahalakshmi during the churning of it for amrtha.

 

Samasthajagathaam maathuH – who is the mother of the whole universe,

 

Yaa sphurathi- who shines

 

thadithanganaa iva- like a lightning,

 

DharaaDhare- among the rain-bearing clouds

 

lalitha urasi- on the  beautiful chest

 

kaalaambudhaali- like a dark rain-bearing cloud

 

kaitabhaareH- of the enemy of the demon Kaitabha- Lord Vishnu

 

dhisathu- may shower

 

badhraaNi blessings

 

me – for me.

 

 

6. praptham padham praThamaThaH khalu yathprabhaavaath

    maangalya bhaaji maDhummaaThini manmanThena

    mayyaapatheth thadhiha manTharam eekshaNaarDham

    mandhaalasam cha majkaraalaya kanyakaayaaH

 

May the smiling half-glance looking askance , of the daughter of the ocean by the power of which Manmatha set his foot first in the Lord of auspiciousness and the destroyer of the demon Madhu, fall on me.

manTharam- looking askance, manThara actually means slow which may mean here the slow glance not a quick one that comes and goes,

 

saagarasambhavaayaaH- of the one who originated from the ocean,Mahalakshmi,

 

yath prabhaavaath- by the power of which (glance)

 

padham- a footing

 

praThamathaH- for the first time

 

praptham – was obtained

 

manmanThena- by Manmatha, the god of love,

 

maDhumaaThini- in the slayer of the demon Madhu, Lord Vishnu, That is,  by the powerful glance of Mahalashmi ManmaTha was able to enter the heart of the Lord Naryana.

 

maangalayabhaaji- describes the Lord Vishnu meaning the one who is the abode of all auspicious qualities, anantha kalyaNa guNa viSjshta.

 

aapatheth- (the glance) may fall

7.viSvaamarendhra padha vibhrama dhaana dhaksham

   aanandhahethuH aDhikam muravidhvishaH api

   eeshath nisheedhathu mayi kshaNam eekshaNaarDham

   indheevarodharasahodharam indhitraayaaH

 

May the half glance of Mahalakshmi, which is the sibling of the inside of blue lotus, which is capable of giving the sovereignty of this world and also devaloka, whimsically and the cause of immense joy to the slayer of the demon Mura, rest a little on me for a moment.

indheevara udhara sahodharam- which is the sibling of the inner part of the blue lotus, meaning, it resembles the inside of the blue lotus and looks as though it was born along with it.

vibhrama- by mere whim

 

visva amara indra padha –the sovereignty  of this world . visva indra padha and also the celestial world devendra padha,

 

aDhikam aanandha hethuH- the cause of great joy

 

muravidhvisaH api- also to the slayer of  demon Madhu,

 

nisheedhathu- may rest

eeshath kshaNam- for a short while.

 

 

8. ishtaaviSishtamathayopi yayaa dhayaardhara

    dhrshtyaa thrivishtapapadham sulabham labhanthe

   dhrshtiH prakrshtakamalodhara dheepthiH ishtaam

    pushtim krsheeshta mama pushkaravishtaraayaaH

 

  May that glance which shines like the inner part of lotus, of Mahaklakshmi, who resides in lotus,  by which even those who have never done the vedic rites like yajna etc. reach the heaven easily, may bestow the fulfillment of my wishes.

prakrshtakamalodhara dheepthiH- which shines like the inner part of lotus,

 

pushkara vishtaraayaaH-of Mahalakshmi who resides in lotus, pushkara means lotus  and vishtara means the seat.

 

yayaa dhrshtyaa- by which glance

 

dhayaardhraa- full of mercy

 

ishta aviSishtamathayaH api- even those who have never done the vedic rites like yajna etc., ishta refers to the sacrificial rites, viSishta mathayaH are those whose mind is engrossed in vedic rites and aviSishta mathayaH means the opposite.

 

labhanthe- attain

 

sulabham- easily

 

thrivishtapa padham – the place of the devas.

 

krsheeshta – may do

 

ishtaam pushtim-the fulfillment of my desires.

 

 

 

9. dhaDhyaath dhayaanupavano dhraviNaambuDhaaraam

    asmin akinchana vihanga SiSou vishaNNe

    dhushkarmaDharmam apaneeya chiraaya dhooram

    naaraayaNapraNayinee nayanaambuvaahaH

 

May  the rain-bearing cloud in the form of the eyes of Mahalakshmi which is with the wind of mercy, give me , the helpless young chathaka, who is suffering, the shower of fortune which will eradicate the effect of bad karma  by removing it very far.

 

 naaraayaNapraNayinee nayanaambuvaahaH- the rain-bearing cloud in the form of the eyes of Mahalakshmi whom is naraayaNa pranayinee, the beloved of Narayana, 

 

dhayanupavanaH- which is followed by the wind of mercy ( the mercy like the wind which follows the eyes which are likened to a cloud,cloud ( ambuvaaha means that which bears water. Here the eyes creates shower of wealth)

 

dhadhyaath- may give

 

akinchana vihanga SiSou- the helpless young chathaka bird, (akinchana means helpless and vihanga= bird, SiSu- the young one.) Chathaka is a mythological bird whih livesonly on rainwater. Here it means the devotee who is helpless and suffering, solely dependent on the mercy of the divine mother Mahalakshmi.

apaneeya- which banishes

 

dhushkarmadharmam- the effects of bad karma

 

chiraaya dhooram- away to a long distance.

 

 

10 geer dhevathethi garudaDhvaja sundhareethi

     Saakambhareethi SaSiSekharavallabhethi

     srshtisThithi pralayakelishu samsThithaa yaa

     thasyai namaH thribhuvanaika guroH tharunyai

 

Salutations to that consort of the sole master of the three worlds, who is known as Sarasvathi, Lakshmi , Bhoodevi and Gouri in her role in creation protection and annihilation.

thasyai tharuNyai – to that consort ( thruNee means a beautiful woman)

 

thribhuvana eka guroH- of the master of the three worlds. Guru here means the one who ordains the three worlds

samsThithaa- firmly established as

 

geerdhevathaa ithi- as Sarasvati the goddess of speech, giraH (speech) dhevathaa

 

garudaDhvaja sundharee ithi- as Lakshmi, the consort of Naryana (garudadhvaja)

 

Saakambaree ithi- as the earth goddess, Saaka means plants and trees and the earth goddess has them as her garment, ambara.

 

SasiSekharavallabhaa ithi- as Parvati, the consort of Siva who wears the moon on his crown,

 

Srshti sThithi pralaya kelishu- in her sport of creation, sustenance and annihilation. This refers to Sarasvathi, the shakthi of Brahma the creator, Lakshmi the shakthi of Vishnu the protector and Parvati, the shakthi of Siva the annihilator.

 

 

 

11. Sruthyai namosthu Subhakarmaphalaprasoothyai

      rathyai namosthu ramaNeeya guNaarnavaayai

      Sakthyai namosthu Sathapathranikethanaayai

      pushtyai namosthu purushotthama vallabhaayai

 

Salutations to her who is the embodiment of Vedas and the giver of the fruit of good deeds , salutations to her who is embodiment of love and an ocean of beautiful attributes, salutations to her who is embodiment of power and resides in a lotus, who is the embodiment of  prosperity and the beloved of the Supreme Purusha.

Salutations to her who has a face like the lotus, salutations to her who was born from the milky ocean, salutations to her who was born along with the Moon and the nectar and salutations to her who is the beloved of Lord Narayana.

 

13.namosthu hemaambhujapeetikaayai

     namosthu bhoomandala naayikaayai

     namosthu dhevaadhidhayaaparaayai

     namosthu SaarngaayuDhavallabhaayai

 

salutations to her who sits on a golden lotus throne, salutations to her who is the sovereign of the world, salutations to her who is merciful to devas and salutations to her who is the beloved of the wielder of the bow Saarnga.

 

14.namosthu dhevyai bhrgunandhanaayai

     namosthu vishNorurasisThithaayai

     namosthu lakshmyai kamalaalayaayai

     namosthu dhaamodhara vallabhaayai

 

salutations to her who was the daughter of sage Bhrgu, salutations to her who is residing in the chest of Lord Vishnu, salutations to Lakshmi whose abode is the lotus and salutations to her who is the beloved of Damodhara.

  

15. namosthu kaanthyai kamalekshaNaayai

      namosthu bhoothyai bhuvanaprasoothyai

      namosthu dhevaadhibhiH archithaayai

      namosthu nandhathmaja vallabhaayai

 

salutations to her who is lustrous and has eyes like lotus, salutations to her who is wealth and who gave birth to the world, salutations to her who is worshipped by the devas and salutations to her who is the beloved of the son of Nandha.

 

16.sampathkaraaNi sakalendhriyanandhanaani

      saamraajyadhaana vibhavaani saroruhakshi

      thvadhvandhanaani dhurithaaharaNodhyathaani

      maameva maatharaniSam kalayanthu maanye

 

The salutations to You, oh the worshipful lotus-eyed mother, are capable of giving prosperity, please the senses, are powerful to give even the kingdoms and they strive to remove the obstacles. May they always perform these to me.

maanye maathaH revered mother,

 

sampathkaraaNi are capable of giving prosperity

 

Sakalendhriyanandhanaani , please the senses

 

saamraajyadhaana vibhavaani are powerful to give even the kingdoms

 

dhurithaaharaNodhyathaani and they strive to remove the obstacles.

17.yathkataakshasamupaasanaaviDhiH

      sevakasya sakalaarTha sampadhaH

      santhanothi vachanaangamaansaiH

      thvaam muraarihrdheyeSvareem bhaje

 

I worship Thee, who is dear to the heart of Murari, and meditating on whose glances  gives all riches to those devotees  who serve them,   with my body, words and deed.

18. sarasijanilaye sarojahasthe

      Dhavalathama amSuka ganDhamaalya Sobhe

      bhagavathi harivallabhe manojne

      thribhuvanbhoothikari praseedha mahyam

 

Be pleased with me oh devi,  who resides in lotus, and has lotus in your hands, wearing whitest robes and fragrant garlands, and who is the loving wife of Lord Hari  and who is beautiful and the benefactor of the three worlds.

sarojahasthe and has lotus in your hands,

ganDhamaalya Sobhe     and fragrant garlands

19. dhighasthibhiH kanakakumbhamukhaavasrshta

      svarvaahinee vimalachaarujalaapluthaangeem

      praatharnamaami jagathaam jananeem aSesha

      lokaaDhinaaTha grhiNeem amrthaabDhiputhreem

 

I bow down to her, in the morning who is being bathed by the elephants of the quarters with the pure and  nice water of the heavenly Ganges drawn with golden vessels, who is the mother of the universe and the wife of the master of all the worlds and who is the daughter of the ocean of nectar.

Oh Lakshmi the consort of the lotus-eyed Lord. You look at me , who is the most natural and deserving receptacle of  your mercy, among all who are  helpless, with your glance which is full of waves of mercy.

     bhavanthi the bhuvi buDhabhaavithaaSayaaH

 

Those who worships everyday Mahalakshmi who is the embodiment of the three vedas and the mother of all the three worlds, with these hymns will become endowed with all good qualities and  good fortune and also will be honoured in this world by the wise for their knowledge.
