Dear All,
Greetings and Namaste. Ashada/Adi Amavasya falls on Saturday, 26th July 2014 and in that connection I am glad to share a combined document that consists of four hymns:
1. Svadha Puja (new) - the first section contains a short Svadha Puja adapted from Svadha Upakhyanam, Brahma Vaivarta Puranam, Prakriti Khanda, Chapter 41. As you would see in the conversation between Lord Narayana and Sage Narada, Lord Narayana mentions that one must perform Svadha worship prior to ancestral worship (shrAddha) without which the latter is ineffective. I have endeavoured to convert the Upakhyana into a short puja procedure for the benefit of those who intend to do Svadha Puja prior to shraddha.
2. Pitru Stutis (Old) - this is a repeat of the Pitru Stutis I had sent in the last two years - one from Brihad Dharma Puranam and two from Markandeya Puranam. The one that is in Markandeya Purana also appears in Garuda Puranam. I basically included all in one document for easy reference.
As per Hindu tradition, the blessings of ancestors is the first and foremost requirement without which even other forms of worship will be infructuous. Apart from the yearly shrAddha, three occasions are very important from the ancestral worship - Ashada/Adi Amavasya that occurs in the first month of Dakshinayana, Mahalaya Paksha (15 days) of workship just prior to Navatri, Makara/Thai Amavasya that occurs in the first month of Uttarayana. But it is also given that Pitru Tarpanam is to be given on 96 times in a year.
