SreejayadhevabhaNitham aDhareekrtha haaram udhaasitharaamam

Harivinihithamansaam aDhithishTathu kanTathateem aviraamam (mugDhe)

This words of Jayadeva, which eclipses the beauty of a necklace adorn the neck of the devotees whose heart is engrossed in the Lord which makes then indifferent to attractive women.

The implication is that the song of Jayadeva is far more attractive than a beautiful necklace of pearls and other gems because it adorns the neck of the devotees who sing always the praise of the Lord. For them the other attractions like jewels, women etc. do not exist. It is said that listening to the story of Krishna stealing butter removes any dishonest thoughts from the mind and the story of his love sports removes the lust form the heart of the devotees.

jayathi padhmaavathee ramaNa jayadhevakavi bhaarathee bhaNitham athi Saatham (priye)

The poet Jayadeva , the belovedof Padmavathi has related the tender  flattering words spoken by Krishna , the destroyer of Mura. May these sweet words be triumphant.

The anger of Radha in turning Krishna away when he approached her is appeased now when he offered to place her foot on his head. But still she is bashful and Krishna goes and waits for her at the place of their rendezvous. Then goaded by her friend she goes there and unites with him which are realted in the next four ashtapadhis.

The significance behind the scene is that we get angry with the Lord when anything goes against our wishes or when we do not get what we want  blaming Him of having a heart of stone. So when He shows us another way we do not want to look at it always thinking about the one that was closed for us. But He , being full of love for us , never takes no for an answer and tries again and again to make us see His way. Finally when we do we are stricken with remorse and not quite ready to approach Him as a lover and embrace Him. For that we need the sakhi, it may be a guru or our own mind and when we finally accept Him as our beloved all ends in

Asdhtapadhi 18

The friend pacifies Radha and tells her not to be foolish when He Himself had come to her and advises to accept Him with honour. This is what we do in life and we need aguru to tell us the right path. We pine all through several janmas to be united with the Lord and to get rid of the sorrow of samsara but when He comes to us we do not recognize Him and more often than not show Him the door. It needs a guru to open our eyes and to accept the Lord without ego.

Ashtapadhi 17

Krishna finally came to Radha in asubmissive mood quite expecting  her anger. Radha , though overjoyed to see him sulks on account of his delay in coming and also seekrishna ing him she thinks he has had dalliance with some other woman and speaks angrily, even before he starts speaking endearingly which she calls a deceitful speech.

Your eyes seem to be red due to being awake during the night( in love sport) and they are slow in I opening due to sleepiness and you seem to have eyes that display the joy of love blossoming through them.

My body which is tender like a flower is hurt even by the flower garland due to the pain of the arrows of Cupid.( Whom)

Radha has been decorating herself with ornaments and flowers anticipating the arrival of Krishna. When he had not come they seem to be a burden to her and like the one who is pierced by arrows when even a slightest touch of anything on the body is painful, the ornaments and the flowr garland seem to torment her body  attacked by the arrows of Cupid.

ahamiha nivasaami nagaNithavanachethasaa

smarathi maDhusoodhano maamapi na chethasaa ( yaami)

I am waiting here in the cane forest fearlessly but the slayer of Madhu is not remembering me even.(Whom)

Krishna , she thought, has forgotten her because  he is in the company of a more fortunate and beautiful  damsel.

haricharaNa SaraNa jayadheva kavibhaarathee

vasathi hrdhi yuvathiriva komala kalaavathee ( yaami)

May this composition of Jayadeva, who is intent on the service of the lotus feet of Lord Hari reside in the heart like a damsel skilful in arts and beautiful.

Ashtapadhi 12

Ashtapadhi

paSyathiddhisi dhiSirahasi bhavantham

thadhaDhara maDhura madhooni pibantham

Radha sees you every where looking in all directions and also inside her , imagining that  you have come to drink the nectar from her lips.

naaTha hare seedhathi raaDhaa aavaasagrhe( Dhruva padham)

Oh Lord Hari, she is sinking with despair at the place of your usual meeting. (refrain)

thvadhabhisaraNa rabhasena valanthee

pathati padhaani kiyanthi chalanthee ( naaTha hare—)

Moved with the enthusiasm  to meet  you she falls down after taking few steps.

vihitha viSadha bias kisalaya valayaa

jeevathi param iha thava rathikalayaa (naaTha hare--)

She wears the white lotus fibre as her bangles and lives only because of the hope of union with you.

muhuravalokitha mandana leelaa

maDhuripuraham ithi bhaavana Seelaa ( naaTha hare--)

Repeatedly contemplating on the ornaments to put on she imagines "I  am the slayer of Madhu."

thvaritham upaithi na kaTham abhisaaram

haririthi vadhathi sakheem anuvaaram ( naaTha hare)

She again and again tells the salhi, "Why Hari is not coming to the meeting place.?"

Slishyathi chumbathi jalaDharakalpam

harirupagatha ithi thimiram analpam ( naaTha hare--)

She embraces the dense darkness that is like dark rain bearing cloud , sayin, "Hari has come."

bhavathi vilambini vigalitha lajjaa

vilapathi rodhothi vaasaka sajjaa ( naaTHa hare---)

When she regains her senses and realize that you havenot come , she cries shamelessly.

Sreejayadhevakaveridham udhitham

rasika janam thanuthaam athimudhitham  ( naaTha hare--)

These words of the poet Jayadeva may give great joy to the rasikas.

Ashtapadhis 10 and 11

Ashtapadhi 10.

Krishna on hearing about the suffering of Radha due to her separation from him tells her that hewill reamin there and asks her to go and bring Radha. Sakhi returns to Radha and tells her that Krishna is equally in anguish about being separated from her.

Ashatapadhi

Vahathi Malaya sameere madhanam upaniDhaaya

Sphutathi kusuma nikare virahihrdhaya dhalnaaya

The gentle breeze of Malaya is wafting , creating the emotion of love , the flowers are opening  and pains the heart of the separated lovers.

Dear friend, Krishna , who wears the garland of forest flowers, is sighing in grief over the separation from you.

dhahathi SiSiramayookhe maraNa anukarothi

pathathi madhana viSikhe vilapathi vikala tharo athi (sakhi seedhathi)

The cool breeze is burning him and he feels as though he is nearing death. The flowers, which fall are the arrows of Cupid and he laments about his state. ( dear friend---)

Dhvanathi maDhupasamoohe Sravanam api dhaDhaathi

manasi valithavirahe niSi niSi rujam upayaathi ( sakhi seedhathi)

When  the bees make humming sound he close his ears and every night he feels the absence of you and is miserable.( dearfriend---)

Vasathi vipina vithaane thyajathi lalitha Dhaama

luTathi DharaNi Sayane bahu vilapathi thava naama ( sakhi seedhathi)

He lives in the forest abandoning his  abode and lies on the floor restlessly calling out your name.(dear friend---)

bhaNathi kavijayadheve viraha vilasithena

manasi rabhasavibhave harirudhayathu sukrthena( sakhi seedhathi)

Jayadeva tells about the anguish of separation of the Lord from His beloved. May Krishna rise in the hearts of those who reads this with piety .

Radha on hearing the plight of Krishna swoons and that is the reason why this ashtapadhi consists of only five verses.

Ashtapadhi 11

Sakhi encourages Radha to go where Krishna is waiting for her.

rathisukha saare kathamabhisaare madhana manoharavesham

na kuru nithambini gamanavilambanam anusara tham hrdhayesam

Krishna is waiting at the spot marked for meeting you with his form beautiful like Cupid, Do not tarry , oh heavy hipped one, and go quickly to him , who is the lord of your heart.

Dheerasameere yamunaatheere vasathi vane vanamaalee

gopeepeena payodhara parisaramardhana chanchala karayuga Saalee( dhruvapadham)

Krishna wearing the garland of the forest flowers is there in the place signaled for your meeting on the banks of Yamuna where the breeze is gentle. He who is fond of playing with gopis is there.

nama sametham krthasanketham vaadhyathe mrdhuveNum

bahu manuthe nanu the thanusangatha pavanachalitham api reNum (Dheera sameere)

He is playing the flute as though signalling to you and calling your name. He feels enamoured of the very dust of  brought  by the breeze as they are from your body.

pathathi pathathre vichalitha pathre Sankitha bhavadhupayaanam

rachayathi sayanam sachaktha nayanam paSyathi thava panThaanam ( Dheerasameere)

He anticipated your arrival whenever there is a rustle by leaves falling on account of  a bird landing on a tree and keeps looking at the path by which you are expected to come.

mukharam aDheeram thyaja manjeeram ripum iva kelishu lolam

chala sakhi kunjam sathimirapunjam Seelaya neela nicholam ( Dheerasameere)

Cast off your anklets which are your enemy to your love  as they are making noise and dear friend go to the bower where he waits for you and wear this dark garment ( so that no one will see you)

urasi muraarerupahithahaare ghana iva tharala balaake

thadidhiva peethe rathivipareethe raajasi sukrthavipaake (Dheerasameere)

When you, yellow like aflash of lightning,  rest on the chest of Krishna who is dark like a cloud, wearing necklaces , you will shine like arestless and crooked streak of lightning on a dark cloud.

vigalitha vasanam parihrtha rasanam ghataya jaghanam apiDhaanam

kisalayaSayane pankajanayane niDhimiva harsha niDhaanam ( Dheerasmeere)

Enjoy with Krishna in a bed of tender sprouts , Oh lotus eyed one , by removing your waist chain and other impediments.

harirabhimaaneem rajaniridhaaneem iyam api yaathi viraamam

kuru mama vachanam sathvararachanam pooraya maDhuripukaamam (Dheera sameere)

Hari is proud, ( because he asks you to come to him instead of coming to you) but the night is going to end soon. Listen to my words and go without delay and please Krishna , the slayer of Madhu.

Sreejayadheve krtha hariseve bhaNathi paramaramaNeeyam

Pramudhitha hrdhayam harimathisadhayam ramatha sukrtha kamaneeyam (Dheeresameere)

Enjoy the words of Jayadeva in service to the Lord Hari, who is  exuberant, causelessly merciful, exceptionally sweet, virtuous and adorned with all desirable qualities.
