Sri Sundar Kumar is giving a series of talks on Bagavadam from 15.12.09 to 31.12.09 in Tippasandra in Bangalore. His way of presenting the Bagavada is highly illuminating and easy to understand the concepts. Some extracts:
1. You have a dream of thives breking into your house. You suddenly wake up and call the police. What can the police do to the thief in the dream? The very act of waking up itself is the solution and police is not needed any more. Similarly the removal of ignorance itself is Moksha. Moksha is not something else to be got. Night is the ignorance and the thieves are our impurities of the mind.
2.There is no sastra rule in any scriptures which exempts Brahmins from doing sandya vandana under any circumstance!
3. When you want to give vastrams to sastrigal on any occasion, then buy good ones as if they are your sons-in-law.Do not give useless low cost vestis etc.
4.Whatever is unfit for humans is also unfit for god. If an insect falls into the ghee, then do not use it for lighting a lamp also.
5.Do not perform sraadha in foreign countries and call the pitrus there! When you do avahanam of the Pitrus in the kurcham, they actually come there.
6. Leave the attachments and live the life.
7.Live in God's thoughts as if your life is going to end in a week!
8.For the Brahmin child whose Gotra is not known, assume it is Kasyapa and proceed. For the house holder who does not know the family god (kula deivam) assume it is Subramanya!
9. Sanyasis should never speak to a woman alone.
10.Never tell you children that it is alright if a sandya vandana is skipped. Always encourage them to follow our traditions and practices.
11. Even Bramha whose life time of 100 years is equivalent to thousands of crores of crores of human years is afraid that his life will end one day. No wonder we humans are also afraid of death. The only medicine to remove the fear is Bagavan Nama!
12. happiness=acievements/expectations. Reduce the denominator to increase happiness. If it is zero then we have infinite happiness.
13. Many Hindu girls/women now do not wear flowers, bangles and other mangala indications when they are eligible for it, but want to wear them when they lose eligibility.
14. When Kanchi periyaval went to Kasi in 1930s, some one challenged him as to how he is called Jagat guru. Sri periyaval replied that it is so because he is considering the whole jagat (world) is his Guru. (not that he is the guru of jagat!). The challenger surrendered himself to the acharya.
Sri Sundar Kumar is a great sanscrit scholar and knows by heart the Bagavata, Narayaneeyam and so many other works of scriptures (with meaning) that we can only wonder at the Gods' grace on him!! I have written some points as I understood them with my very limited knowledge. But everyone should listen to such learned persons to know how much we dont know.
