Krishna

krishna nee begane baaro-21

Soon it was autumn. Srimadbhagavatham describes the entry of Krishna to Brindavan thus:
barhaapeedam natavaravapuH karNayoH karNikaaram
bibhrath vaasaH kanakakapiSam vyjayanthee cha maalaam
ranDhraan veNoraDharasuDhayaa poorayan gopavrndhaiH
vrndhaaraNyam svapadharamaNam praaviSath geethakeerthiH

Krishna was wearing peacock feathers and karnikara flower on his ear, pithambaram on his hips and vyjayanthi garland on his chest and entered Brindavan , which was made beautiful by his feet walking on it, with his friends filling the holes of his flute with the nectar from his lips.
Srimadbhagavatham describes as natavaravapuH, in the form of the best among actors as he was acting the part of Gopala to give joy to the innocent and pure hearted gopas and gopis.
The cows were drinking the nectar of the music with their ears uplifted and imbibing the beauty of his face, shed tears of joy .The calves forgot to drink milk and to eat the fistful of grass in their mouths. The birds listening with closed eyes appeared like the sages who have taken the forms of birds in order to enjoy the music from his flute.
Periazvar describes the scene of Krishna playing the flute in beautiful ten verses. He says "paravayin kanangaL koodu thurandhu vandhu sooZndhu padukadu kidappa,kaRavaiyin kanangaLT kaal parappittu kanindhiRangi seviyaattakilaavE" The birds forgot to go to their nests and came and stood motionless around him. and the cows with their legs stretched listened to him without even moving their ears.

The rivers were like damsels who were attracted towards Krishna denoted their mental turbulence with whirlpools restricting their speed and offered lotuses on the waves to his feet embracing them. Not only the movable beings but also the static beings like the trees expressed their joy by their shook their branches like horripilation of the body. Thus while the movable beings were motionless the static beings were moving.
Periazvar expresses this as " marangaL ninRu madhuthaaraigaL payum, malargaL veezum vaLar kombugaL thaazum irangum koombum thirumaal ninRa pakkam nOkki avai seyyum guNamE"
The trees let out a flow of honey and flowers fell and the branches that were growing upwards bent down and with their ends together appeared as though they were saluting the Lord, turning in the direction wherever he went.
Not only the humans and devas but also other beings and even the whole nature were enticed by the music. The picture of Krishna playing the flute was charming with his small fingers moving on the flute, his lotus-red eyes slanted and red lips puffed up a little, his brows with sweat drops arched upwards. Krishna was of the colour of the rain-bearing clouds and his curly locks around his face looked like the bees around the red lotus The birds forgot to go to their nests and came and stood motionless around him and the cows with their legs stretched listened to him without even moving their ears. The deer forgot to chew the grass and it was slipping from their mouths and they stood motionless as though painted.
*Thus Krishna gave joy to all beings by his flute playing.
How did the womenfolk of the gokula enjoyed his presence is given in a beautiful sloka by Desika.
bAlam tharuNyah tharuNam cha bAlAh
tham avarjyantha samAnabhAvAh
thadhadhbhutham thasya vilOkanam vA
thasyaiva sarvArha rasAthmathA vA

He was loved by young women and by young girls alike as though he was of their age group.Desika says it is to be ascertained whether this wonder is due to his maya or his being the essence of everything, 'rasO vai sah.'

Further Desika says that both Balarama and Krishna were looked upon differently by different groups of people. They were sons to their parents, handsome young men to young women, ancient, puraANapurushas to the wise old men who knew about their avathararahasya.
Krishna became the capilal of Anandhasamrajya for gopis. His vilAsas , actions, were like the army protecting the kingdom. His lustre ,kAnthi was the protecting wall, his sport was like a preventive measure for the non-entry of others. This means that the premebhakthi was the exclusive area of the gopis and could not be penetrated by others due to their lack of understanding.

When Krishna returned from the forest after tending the cattle the young girls of Gokula felt as though they were attacked by a fourfold army of cupid. The chathurangasena of a king, namely. ratha, gaja, thuraga padhAthi, in this case was the sound of the flute, the dust on his body, the sunlight playing on his body at sunset and the garland of forest flowers he was wearing. Each one of them stole the heart of the gopis and they felt as though being attacked by the God of love.
Krishna resembled a tree by his peacock feathers looking like green branches and the cows took shelter in him as in the shadow of a tree.
Desika seems to be enthralled with the peacock feathers, which is obvious even from his Gopalavimsathi and here dedicates four slokas to describe Krishna adorned with peacock feathers.

Krishna shone like a mountain of sapphire with the peacock feathers and they created a magical effect of love on the others ( peacock feathers are found in the hand of magicians to effect the illusion).

Yasodha touched the peacock feathers that adorned his crown again and again and was delighted. Desika uses two adjectives to describe Krishna, mugDHAnganA mOhanavamsika, the one who enchants the beautiful cowherd girls by his flute playing and maneeshiNAm mAngalika, one who effects auspicious happenings for those who meditate on him. That is his maya deludes those who do not have the knowledge of his real nature as the supreme self but for those who have conquered the maya and know him as he is, It fetches auspicious results. But the gopis are blessed even if they were deluded by his maya into believing that he was mortal because their desire was towards him and not on worldly things.
The dark hue of the peacock feathers made also the golden hued Lakshmi in his chest to appear dark. The implication here is that Lakshmi abides in the heart of the Lord in whichever form he appears. That is why when he came as Vamana he covered his chest with his upper garment(angavastra), says one commentator, because he did not want Lakshmi to look at Bali as otherwise it will not be possible to take away the possessions of Bali once he gets the Lakshmikataksham. *
Leelalsuka says
gopaala ajira kardhame viharase
vipraaDhvare lajjase
brooshe gokulahumkrthaiH sthuthisathaiH
mounam viDhathse chidhaam
dhaasyam gokulapumschaleeshu kurushe
svaamyam na dhaanthaathmasu
jnaatham krshNa thavaanghripankajayugam
premNaachalam manjulam
Krishna , you play in the mire in the yard, ajirakardhame, of the cowherds, but shy away from the sacrifices lajjase vipraadhvare, performed by the priests. You converse with the cows hearing their humkara, brooshe gokulahumkrthaiH, but keep silent when you hear the learned praising you, chidhaam sthuthi sathaiH mounam viDhatthe. You serve the fickle-minded gopis, dhaasyam gokulapumschaleeshu kurushe, but do not wish to be the Lord of the self-controlled sages, swaamyam na dhaanthaathmasu..From this it is known, jnaatham, that your lotus feet, thavaanGhripankajayugam, can only be secured, premNaa achalam by love.
Oothukkaadu venkatakavi says this beautifully in one of his compositions.
'maraimunivOr seyyum maathavam enRaalum
maadhavan seivadhum adame
aanaal mandhai paSuvOdu kanRinam Soozndhaalum
mannanukku iruppidamE.'

It means, Krishna is adament towards the sages who do penance to see Him but wherever there are cows and calves, Krishna is found there.

avathaaraaH santhu anye
sarasijanayanasya sarvatho bhadhraaH
krshNaadhanyaH ko vaa prabhavathi
go gopa gopikaa mukthyai

There are other incarnations of the Lotus-eyed Lord all being auspicious. But except the krishnavathara no other incarnation was able to give moksha to cows cowherds and cow maidens.
. Krishna is not only attained by love alone but also gives the devotee the highest fruit of devotion ,that is, salvation. The cowherds and their womenfolk attained mukthi by sheer love for Krishna. Leelasuka says that even the cows attained salvation thus.
