upanayanam

Following are the progressive items in the upanayanam (poonal) ceremony for Brahmana boys, normally celebrated when they are eight years old.

01. Vikhnesvara pooja (brief, about 5 to 10 minutes - done by vadu's [boy's] father)

02. Udaga Shaanthi recitation (takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours - done by Veda-Brahmanas, father joining in if he can)

03. Anguraarppanam (sowing of 5 seeds [padi, black gram, sesame, green gram, mustard] in 5 small pots) (Mother and 5 ladies)

04. Prathi-bandhanam (tying of blessed yellow thread on father's and boy's right wrist, mother's left wrist)

05. Nandhee Shraaddham (honouring ancestors by various gifts including apparel and money to 10 Veda-Brahmanas)

06. Punyaaha-vaachanam (invoking Varuna bhagavaan in silver, brass or bronze kalasham of water)

07. Kalaadhi-krama praayaschittham (gifts to Brahmanas to atone for missed boy's rites, and homam - by father)

08. Pradhaana homam (Principal homam [quite elaborate] - by boy's father)

09. Jayaathi homam (supplementary homam [quite lengthy] - by officiating priest))

10. Yagnopaveetha dhaaranam (wearing of sacred thread by boy)

11. Kumaara bhojanam (restricted meal for boy and boy's Brahmachaari friend)

12. Digh-vapanam (snipping of boy's hair on 4 sides of head [by boy's father])

13. Snaanam (boy's bath with kumbha-jalam, and wearing new mundu and utthareeyam)

14. Homam (boy offers samitthu to fire)

15. Ashmaa-aarohanam (boy stands on ammi-stone to make vows)

16. Formal wearing of Brahmachaari items

17. Formal wearing of deer-skin attire (normally a inch-wide belt over left shoulder)

18. Upanayana homam

19. Yajur-dresha Praaschiththa homam

20. Brahmopadesham (formal secret imparting to boy of of Mahaa Gaayathri manthram, under cover)

21. Plaasha-dhanda dhaaranam (formal presentation of sacred neem-tree branch to boy)

22. Soorya dharishanam (boy's ceremonial viewing of sun through interlaced fingers)

23. Samidhaaa-dhaanam (boy performs fire ceremony with offering of sacred samitthu)

24. Bhikshaa-karanam (boy begs for foodgrains from own mother and 4 to 6 other mothers)

25. Aasheervaatham (Veda-Braahmanas and priests ceremonially bless boy and his parents)

26. Pranava-Shraddha-methaa pooja (by boy with priest's help)

27. Pala-dhaanam (gift of coins to all attending Brahmana guests, spouses and children) (optiomal)

28. Braahmana bhojanam (lunch, fruit, and betel-leaf plus arecanut to attending Brahmanas)
