Sandhyavandana vidhi as per vedic texts includes 24 gayatri mudras supporting which the following mantra is quoted

"Chaturvinshati mudraavai gayatryaam sputhisthitaaha: : iti mudraa najanaati gayatri nishphala bhavet": 

Which means that if you don't perform these mudras during gayatri japam your act of Sandhyavandana gayatri japam is rendered "nishphalam" null/void.
