In the Dharma Sastras, 8 types of Brahmins are described.
Category 1: This Brahmin is called Maatran: One who is born in Brahmin
kula but has no upanayana and no anustana.
2. Brahmanan: He has done some adyayana of Vedas (not fully). Has Achara,
Santi, Satya, Daya and who is intelligent.
3. Srotriya: He has done adyayana of one complete Shaka of Veda with
Kalpasutra or six angas. Does six karmas like yagna. (he is a brahmin by
birth, Dvija by samskaras, and vipra by knowledge combined)
4. Anusaasan: Knows the meaning of Veda and Vedanta, of pure chitta,
sinless, and has qualities of a srotriya.
5. Bruunan: Observes vratas, does yaga and vedadyayana, who has conquered
his senses + anuusasan qualities
6.Rusikalpan: Knows all about Vaideeka and Loukeeka, but is an householder
+Bruunan
7.Rusi: Conquered sex, tapasvi, has control on hunger, has powers to give
boons or curses, satyasanda.
8. Muni: Has no desires on materials, no kama krodas, attained samadhi,
does nothing, has full control on indriyas, considers mud and women on
equal footing.
