iii) He has composed  Keshavanama in Sanskrit for the Keshavanama composed by Sri kanakadasaru.

It appears that Sri Rahavendra Teertha had ordained that Sri Sumatendra teertha should take the PitaDipati. He had great reverence to Gururajaru,  Sri Gururajaru also liked  him for his  Extraordinary intelligence- scholarship and grasping power.

After he took Sanyasa, he came to "AraNi". There was a Madhwa Jagirdar by name SuBhanurAya. He had consumed a type  of oil in Ayurveda by name " Jyotishmati"  and called himself a great Ayurveda PunDit.

He was fond of draging people to debate and thought that sri Sumateendra was young and he cold defeat him. He invited him to his palace, and after  SatkAra, askd him to get ready for a debate. He took a ticklish point in "VyakaraNa" and set for Vyakyaartha.  He was really a great scholar in ShaT ShhAstra.

The debate went on for 8 days.

Observing that Subhanuraya was getting closer to defeat, he asked the Swamji whether he  could contest in poetic  competition. The swamiji replied that he  did not worship KaLi Devata like Kalidasa, , so also did not taste Jyotishmati oil  like him and  did not stole words like him, but still he could compose a poem. The Jagirdar realized that it was the  end of the debate and surrendered to Swamiji.

He declared that he was the best Yatiarys in the lineage of the Yatis of mutt and so saying he presented the Rahu Ketu Vadya to the swamiji.

The MaharaNi of Madurai Sansthana  by name  Mangamma dragged the swamiji for a debate  and observing the swamiji's 'Varchassu" presented  a Navaratna Kachita idol by name VaikunTa Vasudeva which belonged to the Madurai  Palace.

Sri Suyameendra teertha toured south and met heLavana Katte giriyamma who gave Prathamathah Teertha mantrakashate to her observing her devotion and Bhakti.

After his Northen India tour he came to sri ranga and saw Ranaganatha swamy  having no  "Kanti" in the face of the Lord.

A Magician had turned the Lord Raganatha swamy of Sri Rangam face  to be out of brightness, radiance and Lustre. In otherwords he made the Lord"s face to lower the brightness or render pale, dim  or lose luster.

At the request of the priests, sri Suyameendra teertha was successful in surmounting  and restored the

"Kanti". He   installed sri PraNa Devaru in front of sri ranaganatha swamy"

On account of his association with Shahajis of Maharashtra he was able to get lands, grants for the sansthana.

He has written commentaries to the old script Tatwa Prakashika,  Rama DanDaka, Yogeendra,TarAvali Sri Sudheendra teertha was the able Yati who could  speak on authority about the vyakhyanas of Sri Suyameendra teertharu. An important Grantha without forgtting must quote if : mantra Rathna kOsha"

ii)  Night Mahalakshmi Pooja

Lord Sri Krishna ended the atrocities of the demon Narakasura on this day and rescued the 16000 damsels who were captives of the asura and married them. This is a symbolic story which tells us that the Supreme Power, rescues mankind tormented by the worldly bondage, dispels ignorance or darkness, and leads mankind to supreme bliss and enlightenment.

This is a happy occasion for every one to move forward from darkness to light, and to spread happiness all around. Festivities begin with cleaning and decorating of the house the previous day. The huge cauldrons used for heating water for the sacred bath, is scrubbed well. It is then decorated with turmeric powder and kumkum (vermillion powder). The sacred River Ganga is supposed to descend into the  bath water on the eve of the festival. It is customary to greet people by enquiring them if they have had  their Ganga Snaanam (Ganges Bath) on the Deepavali day.

After the neeru tumbuva habba (festival of water filling) a decorated wooden plank (manae) is placed in  front of the decorated alter. New clothes which have to be worn after the Ganga Snaanam is neatly piled  up on it. A big bowl of Gingelly oil (sesame oil) warmed up with a little Omam (Thymol, Ajwain) is also  placed on one side. Just like Ganga is in the bath water, Goddess Lakshmi is supposed to reside in the  oil. All the family members wake up well before dawn. The eldest lady of the family performs the 'ennae  shastra' – by applying the sacred oil on the head, for all family members. After good oil bath, elders  present the family members and all dependants with the new clothes and bless them

i) Naraka ChathurDaRshi-   DeepaavaLi

a) Naraka ChathurDaRshi-
Diwali - Legends of Diwali –
                   Killing of Narakasura

Narakasura ruled the kingdom of Pradyoshapuram. Puranas have it that Naraka, son of Bhudevi, acquired immense power from a blessing given by Lord Brahma after a severe penance. Under his rule, the villagers suffered a lot of hardship as the demon tortured the people and kidnapped the women to be imprisoned in his palace with his invincible might.

Unable to bear the tyranny of the demon, the celestial beings pleaded with Lord Krishna to save them from his torture. But Naraka had a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhudevi. So, Krishna asks his wife Sathyabhama, the reincarnation of Bhudevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka.

When Krishna fell unconscious after being hit by an arrow of Naraka, Sathyabhama takes the bow and aims the arrow at Naraka, killing him instantly. Later Lord Krishna reminds her of the boon she had sought as Bhudevi. The Narakasura Vadh by Sathyabhama could also be taken to interpret that parents should not hesitate to punish their children when they step in to the wrong path.

The message of Naraka Chaturdashi Parva is that the good of the society should always prevail over one's own personal bonds. It is interesting to note that Bhudevi, mother of the slain demon Naraka, declared that his death should not be a day of mourning but an occasion to celebrate and rejoice. It is said Lord Krishna had an oil bath to rid himself off the blood spattered on his body when Naraka was killed. The tradition is followed and people offer prayers on the previous day of the Naraka Chaturdashi to the vessel in which water is being heated for having bath. Hindus light fireworks, which are regarded as the
effigies of Narakasura who was killed on this day.

Celebrations of Deepavali in Malnad is more about forging our relationship with the nature, expressing our gratitude to the things used in daily life, worshipping 'Lakshmi' the crop that sustains us throughout the year and cows which are integral to our agriculture-based lifestyle. The cultural-cum-traditional events like antige-pantige and kolata add to the festive fervour.

Preparations for Deepavali begin soon after Bhumi Hunnime, 'seemantha' to the earth pregnant with rich crop. From this day, children and adults start collecting wild yellow coloured berries to prepare garlands for the cows during Gou pooja. Both kids and adults compete with each other to collect a large number of berries and  the berries will be hidden like treasure till the day of Gou pooja.

Of course, no one can be blamed if those jealously guarded berries are stolen in the night before 'Boore

Habba,' the beginning of four-day festival. For, 'boore kalavu' (theft) is sanctioned on this particular night and considered holy. The whole day will be spent plotting what can be stolen from the neighbouring houses – cucumber, coconut, or flowers or bamboo ladder etc. Sometimes the most important things like mugs in the bathroom go missing.

While young ones are busy with 'boore kalavu,' early in the morning women worship the well in the house before drawing a pot of water as part of the 'Neeru tumbuva habba.' The women prepare for 'Abhyanjana' or

'Mangala Snana' which includes applying mustard oil and massaging the body an hour before taking bath in hot water, on Naraka Chaturdashi day. Besides, women decorate mugs and 'hande' (a huge container to heat the water) in bathroom with rangoli and garlands of neem and mango leaves.

Each and everything that is used in the daily life, starting from mug to plough to ladder to bullock cart, is worshipped. As harvesting of areca nut begins soon after this festival, the areca nut will also be worshipped, praying for rich yield.

And in the evening, oil-soaked cloth wrapped to sticks and these sticks are lit in each and every corner of the house, garden and in different directions of the farm.

DeLIGHTful dishes

Special delicacies that will also be available are three types of holige - Bele Holige, Kayi Holige and

Karjura Holige; four types of Payasa - Bele Payasa, Akki Payasa, Godhi Payasa and Gasagase Payasa; and 30

types of other sweets.

It will be a great occasion to relish yet another grand intrigue with a variety of traditional delicacies, as the City:s cosmopolitan population celebrates the festival of lights – Deepavali

Uttara Karnataka Nagarikara Abhivrudhi Sangha, Bangalore,  family sticks to the festive traditions of

Uttara Karnataka region, says: For us, it is an occasion to catch up with the family and to feast on some topical delicacies. Back home, in our region, the festival will be celebrated in high spirits on all

three days and the streets glitter with shops decked up for the auspicious Lakshmi Puje performed on second and third days.

On Naraka Chaturdashi Day, also referred to as Neeru Tumbuva Habba, when the men of the family, especially the son-in-laws specially invited for the occasion, will be given a grand oil bath – five types of sweets and chakkuli-kodubale are prepared.

They include Surali Holige, Karchikayi, Chiroti, Besan Undi and Karadantu, apart from both sweet and khara Shankarapouli. For intermediate Amavasye day, women fasting the whole day prepare Godhi Huggi and

Karigadabu as offering to Goddess Lakshmi, which are relished by the family during dinner. On Bali Padyami, many perform Lakshmi and Saraswati Puje  early morning, and relish on Shavige Payasa during

Lunch.

Though the festival catches greater galore in rural areas, urban communities also cherish the festive spirit with a grand festival menu for lunch on all three days – including special rice items, kosambari, palya, payasa, among others. The main delicacy for native Bangaloreans and people of urban Mysore
Karnataka region, is the Holige and also Karjikayi or Kadubu.

While many new Bangaloreans prefer to join their families back home at their native towns, some create the same spell right here. They prepare and relish the traditional rich festive platter in midst of their hectic urban life and despite the increased cost of living in the City.

However, many a food catering firms in City constantly come to the aid of many a food lovers who might not have time or patience to cook. Nammura Hotel in J P Nagar is preparing Habbaduta – which the customers can carry home – on all three days of Deepavali. Other special delicacies that will also be
available are three types of holige – Bele Holige, Kayi Holige and Karjura Holige;

four types of Payasa –

Bele Payasa, Akki Payasa, Godhi Payasa and Gasagase Payasa; and 30 types of other sweets.

Nammura Hotel's CEO Krishna Hegde says: We offer the Habbaduta and special dishes at economical prices, which would help our customers cut down the costs in the wake of increased expenses. A small family of two persons can purchase food from our outlet at half the expenditure they might incur to prepare the same volumes at home.

Tulu community people relish on Ottu Shavige, Eriyappa and varieties of Payasa on the occasion. Sumangala Achar, a social worker and Tulu cuisine expert residing in Bangalore, says: Traditionally, Kadubu made using kedige leaf and Gatti – a dish made of kusubalakki using hebbalasina leaf - are prepared. Gatti is a must offering to the deity during Balindra Puje. Due to non-availibity of such materials, here many of us contend only with Ottu Shavige, Payasa and Eriyappa.

IV)   DeepavaLi Amavaasaya-
       Somavathi Amavaasya-

Antige-Pantige

On Amavasya day, the gold ornaments, cash and crop which symbolise Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. And in the evening the entire house waits for 'antige-pantige' troupes which visit each house singing folk songs and dancing. The woman offers them rice, coconut, 'holige' and 'kadubu' and pours oil to the lamp they have brought and lights up her lamp with that. The troupes comprising several men from different classes and castes, go to all the houses in the neighbourhood, blessing and lighting the lamps in these houses.

The more exciting is Gou pooja on Bali Padyami day. The cowshed will wear a new look with plantain and mango leaves, turmeric, kumkum and rangoli and the cows and calves wearing ornaments, garlands made of the wild berries, leaves and flowers. It would be a great fun to see the calves, bewildered to see pooja, aarathi and the excitement unusual in a cowshed on other days, refusing to wear the garlands. After the pooja they will be left free – the house will be full of laughter to see the cows vying to eat the  garlands. We would wait eagerly to receive them in the evening with 'aarathi' and count how many of them  have their ornaments intact. And follows 'Kolata' troupes dancing to various folk songs. Through Kolata  the troupes retell the stories of yester years.

  c)  Lakshmi pooja in the night.
      After midnight "Alakshmi Uchchaatane"

  d)  Lighted DeepasthamBha to be worshipped

  e)   Ulka daRshana

It is also called ULKA PRADARSHANA:

The significance is like this:

i)  There may be persons having committed suicide by burning themselves or died due to, burns, lightening  or  due volcanic effect etc. They might have  come to 'MahAlaya'  from Yamaloka. ii)  This is done on  this day, after sun set and at Pradhosha KAla,

iii) The lights are lit after reciting the following sloka:

Agni Dhagdaaschaye Jeevaa ye pya Dhagdhaah kule mama |
Ujwala JyothishaaDhagDhaasthe yaamthu ParamaamGathim ||
Yamalokam Parithyjya  Agathaa YeMahaalaye |
Ujwala JyothiSha vaRthu PrapaShyamthu Vrajanthu the ||

iv) This night one should definitely take food.

v) In so doing there is benefit to him.

       the  House "Daaridhyaa Bhimaani Devatha"

f  AALakshmi NissaraNa:

In the mid - NIGHT, on this day ladies would  clean the yard., also  in front of the house and drive away  the ' ALAKSHMI' .They must clean and  sprinkle water

Bidding adieu

Dipd, Dipd Deepolige, Dipd, Dipd Deepolige... echoes across the hills, forests and fields, indicating the  culmination of the celebrations. Again the house and farm are illuminated with lights, this time, bidding  adieu to the festival of lights and gearing up for days of hard work as harvesting begins soon.

(part-II)
Kartheeka Masa Shukla PakSha
Masa Niayamaka : Shree Damodaraya NamaH

There are fourteen nAmas (= names) of Lord Vishnu which are scripturally most sanctified and which are very often used for the most fundamental of all rituals,

namely the Achamanam, are:

achyuta,
ananta,
keSava,
nArAyaNa,
mAdhava,
govinda,
vishNu,
madhusUdana,
trivikrama,
vamana,
SriIdhara,
hRshIkeSa,
padmanAbha,
dAmodara.

The name dAmodara has the unique distinction of building into itself the two parts of the Lord

One, the naiveté that was exhibited by Him when His mother Yasoda bound him as a child by a few feet of rope tied around his waist;
and
the other, the divine grandeur which in its cosmic form has the entire universe in its stomach. dAma means rope.

His stomach (udara) was bound by the rope affectionately tied round his waist by the mother.

dAma also means abode; the abode of the whole universe  is His stomach.

A third meaning is: he is greatly compassionate (udAra ) towards even sinful people, because of his self-control (dama).

Some story about DeepaVaLI. Festival of Lights.

1)  There was a Raja Kumar to Haima King. On the fourth day of his marriage the Raja Kumar died due to a snake bite. His young wife was crying.

The Yamadootas could not bear the cry of the Sadhvi maNi.  They reported to the Yama Dharma Raja

Yama Dharma Ordered that

" during DeepavaLi starting from Dhana Trayodashi, for five days, whoever lights lamp in front of their house, those would not have any  Apa Mrutyu"

That is why rows of lights are lit for five days during deepavaLi and it is called Festival of LIGHTS.

It is also the Pattabhisheka Day for Sr Rama after returning from Lanka.

Same thing in Mahabharata being the day when Panadavas complete their 13 years of exile.

2)    Why COWDUNG in Cone shape with flower kept on the
      sides of the Doors ?

Bali Padyami Day is also GovardhanoddharaNa day.

In Karnataka they call it : HaTTiya Habba".

"HaTTI" Means cattle and the Gopalaka group.

In olden days we had lot of cattle, Gopalakas. They use to cultivate land  and give us paddy. Grains, milk etc. In Kartheeka Maasa, they happen to worship these cattle and the Manure.

Thus  the Cow dung is made into a cone form ( depicting Govardhana Giri)  with a "Shamanti flower atop" and kept in the doors. They used to prepare  panadava idols,  and worship. Performing " HaTTi" pooja is  from Dravidians.

Thus this deepavaLi symbolizes Aryan and Dravidian culture.

They keep cowdung cones right from entrance to the back.  Each one depicts Lakkavva, means Lakshmi Devi, Even they right Go-Paada in the house  with the fond hope that by movement of Lakshmi and Cattle in the house, the granary would be  always plenty,  They  worship the cattle, the Vessel they use for milching the cow,  the Churning  stick called " KaDagOlu" and the Go shaala. prepare lot of sweets and eat well.

IN   OTHER  COUNTRIES:

i)   IN UK they celebrate this deepotstav in the name of Guy Falls Day. Explosive substances are packed inside a Doll called Guy Falls and  after ignition, they watch the dazzling brilliance of light and sound and celebrate the festival Destruction of evil is the significance.

ii)  4th July   American Independence. People holding candles dance in the street. It is significant to watch the spectacular fire works at Niagara Falls.

iii) Japan, "Toronaa GaaShi"  deepotstav is cenebrated under this banner. The lights are covered with coloured paper around the house. To express that their life be ever joyous, peaceful and with happiness. Even they go for
boat ride in decorated boats with lights on.

iv)  NEAPAL 'Tihaar" They decorate the house with lights and celebrate   5 days Festival.

First  day they prepare sweets and savories which are kept in plates,   By its side ,they spread rice.
Keep the Banana  leaf above the rice
Keep Lights at the center of the Banana leaf-Worship-offer prayer  and later consume them.

Second  day They entertain  the animals that are dear to them giving the best food  dearer to dogs, cats etc

Third  day they perform GO POOja

Fourth  day they perform  Lakshmi Pooja

Fifth  day. Sisters day.

v)  Thailand In order to remember Maha ViShNu, and to pay respect to Gautam Buddha, they lit lamps at temples. Even they leave Diyaas in the water with the fond hope that their life would be peaceful.

vi) Iran "JORASTER"  in order to remember him on his Birth Day , they lit lamps.

vii) Egypt -  To remember Pitru Devatas,  they lit lamp in Mud- earthenware diyas and pour oil to ensure that the lamp would glow whole light without becoming "Shanta" and would be awake whole night for this purpose. If the lamp puts off they consider as bad omen.

It reminds us the "AkhanDa" we keep during Navaratri days ensuring that the light glows 24hrs/9 days

viii) It reminds us the Halloween celebrated in October  in  UK and USA, keeping the  carved Pumpkin with lights inside, in front of the House to drive away evil spirit

They  keep Hay stack also to welcome the Farmer  With what enthusiasm they go to farm  pluck Pumpkin and bring home.

iii)   The Lord, in his incarnation as Vaamana, humbled King Bali who was very proud and haughty. Still, impressed by the king's DhaaRmic disposition, he was made the king of the nether regions.

When told to ask for a boon, Kind Bali requested that lakshmi should stay for ever in the houses of his subjects who celebrate the three-days Deepavali festival.

There, it was the day that Vaamana placed His foot on Bali's head and sent him away to the nether worlds. Special  worship of the Cow is a must on this day.

[ For Jains, the festival of lights  signifies the period in which  Mahaaveera attained NiRvaaNa.]

On account of the blessing from Sri Vamadeva, Balichakravarthi got the Suthala Lokadhipathya- Sri Vamadeva gave the name " Bali dina" for to-day-

Every one  would be happy on this day.  Hence all are required to take oil bath and worship Balindra and perform MangaLa KaaRya reciting  "Punarehi  Vratasya Me"
