*rājā rāṣṭrakṛtam bhuṅkte rājaḥ pāpaṁ purohitaḥ|*
*bhartā ca strīkṛtaṁ pāpaṁ śiṣyapāpaṁ gurustathā||*
*cāṇakya nītiḥ*

*The ruler has to bear the brunt of all the sins committed by his subjects.
The Royal preceptor will have to suffer for the sins of the King. The
husband is responsible for the wrong actions of his wife and will have to
atone for them and the sins of the disciples goes to the teacher.*
*Chanakyas logic is that the subjects tend to go wayward when the ruler is
not effective. It is the duty of the royal preceptor who is also the
minister to aid and advise the king and lead him in the right path. The
lady (of the relevant period) was under the protection and care of the
husband and if there are aberrations in her activities, the husaband was
solely responsible for it. The disciple learns all the lessons of his life
from his teacher, and if the teacher imparts improper education the disciple
will lose proper direction in life and the sin should definitely be credited
to the account of the guru.*
