=====================
Its because both these items sprang up from a murdered cow.

In olden days when there used to be sacrifice of cows and horse in fire; once when a cow was cut into small pieces and put into the fire, when brahmins all around were chanting mantras, one of the brahmin's wife who was in family way, was also sitting and watching the event when suddenly owing to masakkai, when a woman feels like eating odd things during pregnancy, took a piece of cut cow and hid it under her thigh to be eaten after the event. This was not noticed by anyone.

After the entire cut pieces of cow were put into the sacrificial fire and a new cow emerged out of fire, the same brahmin noticed a slight defect in the new cow and went into deep meditation to know how this occured in the new one. He realised what had happened. In the meanwhile brahmin's wife saw her hubby going into deep meditation to investigate the deformity and immediately rushed out of the pandal where this event was happenning and threw the hidden cut piece of dead (murdered) cow in a nearby field so that she is not caught red-handed.

The story ends here.

After a few days and months, a new crop grew from the flesh of cow which turned out to be onion and from the bone, came out garlic crop.

Though these two items have numerous medicinal properties, rigid Vaishavites are of the opionion that one can live even without eating them.
