Considering man's progress and downfall depend upon the planets yAjJNavalkya recommends the worship of the nava - graha, a description of which is seen in the yAjJNavalkya - smR^iti (1.3.8). vasishhTHa (5.3), states that the events, good and evil of the past, present and future are to be read from the progression of breath in the particular nADIs (V.S. 5.38).
The chandra - nADI, iDA by name, is said to be situated on the left, the sUrya - nADI, piN^gala on the right, and in between these two the sushhumnA. It is also added that the 12 rAshis along with the planets travel daily through the nADIs. The rAshis are divided into 3 categories. In every rAshi the 5 elements, viz. vAyu, agni, pR^IthvI, varuNa and vyoma occur in that order and the effects, auspicious and inauspicious, are elaborately described, depending upon the progression of air being through the right or the left nostrils. Depending upon the rAshi and nADI through the vAyu progresses contrariwise, evil effects like mental agitations are described from the 1st rAshi of the day to the last rAshi. Eating, intercourse, war and amassing wealth are to be performed when the breath progresses through the right nADI,whereas deeds like pilgrimage, marriage, etc., are to be performed when the breath progresses through the left nADI (V.S. 5. 46 - 47).
Such descriptions of good and evil effects depending upon the progression of the breath through the nADI is found neither in the yogasUtra, the commentaries thereon, nor in the haTHayoga - pradipikA. In works like the shivasvarodaya, etc., similar descriptions are available.
