charaka - saMhitA on unmAda (insanity)

From the chikitsAsthAnam of charaka - saMhitA, 9th adhyAya, shlokas 4 - 8:

" Antagonistic, defective and impure food; insult to the devas, gurus and brAhmaNas; mental shock due to fear or exhilaration and difficult postures are causes of unmAda (insanity). "
" By the causative factors the doshhas get vitiated in the person having a small proportion of sattva (guNa) and affects the hR^idaya, the seat of the intellect. Therefrom reaching the mind - carrying channels they derange the mind of the person(afflicted) quickly. "
" Perverted intellect, psychic agitation, restless eyes, impatience, incoherent speech and vacant hR^idaya (mind) - these are the general symptoms of insanity (unmAda).
" Thus the person wih a deranged mind does not know pleasure, pain, ethics (AchAra) or dharma, as such how can he get peace? So due to loss of memory, intellect and perception he lets the mind loose to wander here and there. "

"Insanity is excessive wandering of intellect, mind and memory. This is of two types - innate and exogenous.
