Sivarathri & panchakshara stotram

No greater Manthram exists for recitation on Mahaa
Shivaraathri Day than the Vedic Panchaakshara Mahaa
Manthram.  (Yajur-Veda Thaittireeya Samhithaa.)
May I, with all due humility, and with due deference to my
betters and fellow-Bhakthaas, attempt a translation to the
Manthram which we recite daily?

Shree Shiva Panchaakshara Sthrothram:

Naagendra-haaraaya thri-lochanaaya
Bhasmaangaraagaaya Mahesvaraaya
Nithyaaya Shuddhaaya digambaraaya
Thasmai "Na"-kaaraaya Namaha: Shivaaya.

To you, who wears the Supreme King of Serpents as the grand
garland around your neck, and who have three divine eyes
To you, who delight in having your limbs laved with the
Sacred Ash, and are the Greatest of Gods
To you, who are Eternal, Purest of the Pure, wearing the
Celestial Clouds as your attire
To you, embodied in the Sacred Sound of "Na", I offer my
humble and pious salutations and prostrations

the gread Mandhakinee Mountain
To you, the Greatest of Gods, who rides on the back of the
Divine Bull named Nandi, to whom you show yourf affection
To you, who are adored by the sprinklingv of the petals of
the mandhaara blossom, which is of inestimable value and
importance among all flowers
To you, embodied in the Sacred Sound of "Ma", I offer my
humble and pious salutations and prostrations.

Sooryaaya Dakshaadhwara-naashakaaya

To you, Great God of Tranquillity, who are fascinated by
gazing on the beauteous and ever-enchanting face of Devi
Gowri your Consort, whose resplendence outshines the most
powerfully bright and heat-radiating Sun, and who destroyed
the intolerable and prideful King Dhaksha
To you, of the auspicious and celebratory cerulean-hued
neck, and whose unfurled battle-standard bears the image of
the Sacred Bull
To you, embodied in the Sacred Sound of "Shi", I offer my
humble and pious salutations and prostrations.

the line of kings (including the Divine Sri Rama of
Ramesvaram fame), whom Sage Agasthya the Maharishi born of
the sacred water contained in the Kumbham water-vessel, whom
Gauthama Maha-rishi of unparallel fame, whom Indra the Ruler
of the Heavens, whom all other ascetics and Realised Ones of
comparable quality, whom Celestial Beings of every order of
precedence -- all adore by piously bestowing flower petals
on your head in archanai
To you, who wears the cooling, healing Moon, the vibrant
life-sustaining Sun, and the sacred Fire of the Homa-Agni as
your three eyes
To you, embodied in the Sacred Sound of "Va", I offer my
humble and pious salutations and prostrations.

Divine Ascetic
To you, who is armed with the fearsome and Victorious Bow
called Pinaakam held in your hand, and who is the very
embodiment of Sanathana Dharmam itself
To you, who are the Divinest of the Divine Gods, and who
are clothed in celestial clouds
To you, embodied in the sound "Ya", I offer my humble and
pious salautations and prostrations.

this Grace-bestowing five-lettered sacred code-word in the
sanctum (or invoked presence) of Lord Shiva, shall attain
the abode and presence of Lord Shiva, and shall attain
merger and union with the Lord.

Om, namah Paarvathee Pathaye, Hara, Hara Mahaadevaa!
