shivanE naa ninna sEvakanaiyya -Devarnama & its meaning

Courtesy: Smt.R.Pramila

Hare Shrinivasa!
Sri  Rudrantargata Narasimhaya namah!
Sri Shreedavittala dasaraarya namah!

In this devaranama Sri Shreeda vittala dasaru explores the sway of Lord Shiva on the mind. In the pallavi and anupallavi he states the position of the sadhaka and seeks the grace of Shiva to uplift him from the vagaries of the restless mind. The special medicine for the freedom from samsara is the Srimad Bhagavatham . Shiva is reminded of his upadesha to Parikshit raja with the implied entreaty to do the same for oneself. Dasaru goes on to describe the glory of Shiva and gives reasons for seeking his grace . The role of Rudra in this creation is hinted at and his sway over the abhimani devatas of the indriyas makes him the most suitable one to seek for stability in thought , word and deed. Dasaru glorifies him as the victor of death and the one who can take one accorss the dangerous ocean of samsaara which is caused by papa karmas .
shivanE naa ninna sEvakanaiyya
durmana biDisayya karuNadi piDi kaiyya
shivanE naa ninna sEvakanaiyya
O Shiva, I am your servant! Please remove the negative thoughts from my mind and hold my hand. Lead me towards the purity in thought."
Shiva means mangala – mangala means that which takes you to great heights of thought, which in turn takes the soul to the heights of perfection.
Shiva is the manObhimani devatha and entreating him for the removal of bad thoughts is  most apt as one speaks or acts based on the mind's inclination. One's speech and action should be tuned towards the good of others or atleast refrain from hurting others. This can be achieved if the thoughts can be controlled . Positive thoughts will give rise to good speech and action which is pleasing to those around oneself as well as lead one to spotless character which is the main requirement for a sadhaka. Once this state has been reached then the study of the scriptures with the guidance of a guru makes the person advance in spirituality. The study is facilitated by the pure mind as the nature of spiritual truths are too subtle to be perceived by a polluted mind.

O Shiva, aren't you the one who revealed the Bhagavatha shastra to Pariskshit raja the king of Hastinapur ? Didn't you reveal the shastra which is the passageway to moksha. "
Here the inferential entreaty to Shiva is to come to the aid of oneself and help one to  free oneself from the bonds of the samsaara, with the help of the study of the Bhagavatha which is also called as moksha shastra.  Note that  Dasaru has  referred to the Bhagavatha as bhavamochaka shastra.

saakAri – the giver of form
shaarvaridava – the one who loves the night - moon
Dasaru says, " O Shiva you are the giver of form to the three tatvas vaikarika, taijasa and tamasa ahankaras . You have the moon on your head as an ornament You are the holy one, and the bimba of the devathas who are in turn the controllers of the indiryas. Please remove the state of constant conflict in my mind. I plead with you to control the roving of my mind and take me to Vaikunta , O one with the blue throat! "
vaikaarika-taijasa-taamasaveMba traitatvagaLeMba
saakaari
The tamo guna contained in the rajo guna used for shrishti is the cause for the birth of the ahankara tatva. The ahankara tatva is of three types – vaikarika, taijasa and tamasa. From these all the other things are created. The five elements are created from the tamasa ahankara, the senses and sense organs are created from the taijasa ahankara and the mind is created from the vaikarika ahankara along with the tatvabhimani devathas for the pancha bhutas, the karmendriyas and jnAnendriyas.
Hence you are most suited to make my senses and mind toe the straight path to the flawless kingdom of vaikunta. You wear the moon as an ornament on your head. Your head is spread in the entire sky and you carried the sacred water ganga  which is hari's paadodaka on your head . You are entirely pure and sacred because of this sparsha of Hari. You are the inner reflector of Indra and other dieties  and hence you can actually direct what they should do. So I beseech you to enable me to seek the Lord and use my senses and mind in this endeavour."
The goal of all mukthi yogya souls in named here by Dasaru as Vaikunta , the flawless abode. In order to reach this place one needs to shed one's flaws, acquire the knowledge of the Lord  and reach the heights of devotion which would earn the grace of the Lord. So in order to do any of these the dhyana of the Lord is the only way. Whatsoever work or karma one does is efficacious only if the thoughts of the Lord, His all doership, His sway on all the souls, the matter and everything as well as His independence is reflected on.  Sri Jagannatha Dasaru says in HKS 11th sandhi . Here the word ninna refers to the Lord Hari.
ninna smarisade snAna japa hO
mAnna vastragajAshva bhU dhana
dhAnya modalAdakhiLa dhaRmava mADi phalavEnu...HKAS_11-08
This is possilbe only if the mind is able to focus and stops wandering to the worldly matters which are accessed constantly by the senses. This is only possible with the grace of the manObhimAni devatha, Shiva.
The mind is prone to paradoxical thoughts. It always thinks first one thing and then another quite opposite to this thought. It is a continous flow of disrupting thoughts which makes the soul unable to focus on the purest of the pure, the Lord of Vaikunta.
Dasaru says, "I plead with you and beg you to remove these misgivings and make my mind steady in the thought of Vishnu and instill the requirements for the journey to the land without any blemishes- Vaikunta."
Arjuna in the BG says  to Krishna ," chanchalam hi manaH krishna pramati balavad driDam"
"The mind is very strong and fickle and hence very difficult to keep under control. Therefore it is impossible to do dhyana yoga correctly. He goes on to compare the wind in the sky to the mind. Just as the wind cannot be contained to a certain place but runs free in the sky, so also the mind runs free in its thought process. How is it possible to focus?"
Krishna answers that ," By practise it is possible!"
Here Dasaru is pleading with Shiva to enable one to practise for even that is not possible without the grace of the ManobhimAni Shiva.
In another song KailAsha vAsa gowrIsha Isha , Sri Vijayadasaru asks Shiva to bestow on him the dhyana of Hari which is continuous like the flow of oil. Unlike water, oil just flows continuously without gaps!
tailadhAreyaMte manasu koDu hariyalli shaMbO….

mRutyuMjaya muppura  hara mahadEva dEvarkaLa kaava
stutyaadrija ditija tatimanadaava duritaaMbudinaava
kRuttivaasa ennatyaparaadagaLeTTeNisade
kRutakRutyana maaDai shivanE /shivanE/
" You are the one who is victorious over Mrutyu. "
Why so ? It is because Rudra is the controller of the mrithyu under the direction of Narasimha. It is because the lord as Sankarshana makes Shiva as the medium for the dissolution of the entire world.
Then Dasaru says, You are three fold!
He is threefold being the originator of the Vaikarika, Taijasa and Tamasa ahankaras. He is threefold because He has three eyes too. He is Hara, the remover of distress and is a great diety who is always singing in praise of Vishnu. He protects the dieties below him in taratamya. He is worshipped in the form of a linga and sets fire to the minds of the daityas ie does not empower the thoughts in the daitya's minds.  He thus removes the effects of the daityas on the minds of his devotees and takes them across the sea of miseries.
What is the relation between the misery and the daityas ?
Just like tatvabhimani devathas there are tatvabhimani daityas and they under the instruction of the heirarchy of devathas as per the Lord's will . They inspire the jiva towards that which is detrimental to its lasting happiness.
By burning up the thoughts in the daityas  who are getting ready to attack his devotees , Shiva tides the devotees over the treacherous ocean of samsaara. He provides them with the right attitude to minimize their pain, all the while keeping the goal of Vishnu smarane in their minds.
Dasaru says ,"O Shiva, You are  the embodiment of Vairagya wearing only the skin of animals as your clothing. Please forgive my sins and make my life a purposeful one, Engage me in the deeds which would make my life fruitful. I am your servant, please make me pure."

It is noteworthy that sins are the byproduct of desire. The desire to possess, own, achieve etc etc drives the soul to do actions which add to the storehouse of sins. If detachment to worldly pleasures is reached then these actions become minimized and slowly come to a stop. Shiva is to be meditated on as the one with the perfection in such detachment.

"Your head is splendourous and shines like a crystal. It is completely pure as well as full of brilliance. You  bring the wishes of devotees to them. You are the cause for wishes to be fulfilled because you are always in the shelter of Lord Krishna the friend of Arjuna. You are hence pure. You wear the elephant skin . You are free from deceit. You have hair which is very massive and spread out. You ride on the Vrushaba or bull. You have an eye on your forehead. Please rescue me from the miseries of samsara. "
In this charanam Dasaru gives a wonderful description of Shiva which one could use to contemplate on. The wonderful way in which Dasaru says that the cause for all the devotees desires to be fulfilled is because Shiva is always in the ahsraya of the Lord Krishna,Phalguna sakha, Shreeda vittala . Shiva is referred to as Vaishnavottama with reference to all souls below his kaksha in taratamya. He is always in the thoughts of Vishnu and gives such thoughts to those who seek him for this.  Dasaru has given a beautiful picture of Shiva's place in Srimad Acharya's philsophy which is the true interpretation of the Shastras -Tatvavada.

Chaturmasya starts from Ashada Shudda Dwadashi and ends on Kartika Shudda dashami.   On Ashada Shudda dashami,  all the yathis would have their head shaved. {Please note – Yathis are supposed to get their head shaved only on Pournami.} They are not suppose to get their head shaved during the entire Chaturmasya period.
Some Yathis sits for Chaturmasya on  Ashada Bahula Panchami, i.e., Teekarayara Aradhana Day. Chaturmasya comprises of Hindu Calender months Ashada, Shravana, Bhadrapada and Karthika.

Ashada shukla Ekadashi –  The eleventh day in Ashada (Shayanaikadashi) , – it is on this day that Srimannaarayana, even though he is sleepless, hungerless, pretends to sleep, which is termed as "Yoga Nidra".  He sleeps till Karthika Shudda Dwadashi (Uttana Dwadashi) .

Everybody must observe Chaturmasya - All Chaturvarnaas, viz.,Brahmana, Kshatriya, Shudra, Vaishya, all should observe Chaturmasya.  All Chatur Ashramas viz., Brahmachari, Gruhasta, Vanaprasta and Sanyasi .  Even Women irrespective of  Rajaswala Period  must observe Chaturmasya Vratha.
The main purpose of observing Chaturmasya is Bhagavad AJnya (Srihari's   Orders).   We are doing this to please paramathma only.   Observing Chaturmasya gets more punya than what if we do other vrathas.   If we perform we get more punya, if not performed, we will get sin.
We are not doing Marriage, Upanayana etc during this Chaturmasya, as Srimannaaraayana will be on sleep, i.e., Yoganidre.,  Auspicious functions done during this time due to ignorance, can result in health disorders, injury and other calamities – as per Skanda Purana.  Naming ceremony can be done.
Those who are doing shraddha during the Chaturmasya, have to follow the Chaturmasya dharma, on shraddha day, prohibited items not to be used.

Mauna bhojana vrathaDuring bhojana one must not talk to anybody (loukika topics).  He must do only Harismarane only and do the bhojana.
Dharana – PaaraNa vratha –  Those who observe this vratha must take bhojana one day, next day, he must observe fasting.  This vratha to be followed for four months if possible.  If not possible, first month or last month also can be done.  On the starting day of Dharanaparana vratha – the first fasting day, he has to do punyaahavaachana.  Do sankalpa – On paarane day, he has to give argya to Narayana 108 times, then he has to do bhojana.
After completion of vratha, he has to do udyapana.  Give Lakshminarayana idol daana after doing pooja of that idol with panchamrutha.  After completion, he has to arrange for bhojana of brahmana – suvasini.
a)    Sugreeva had done this for sin (paapa) parihaaraartha of Vaali nigraha, as instructed by Ramachandra.
b)    As per Krishna's instructions paandavaas had done this when Dharmaraja was worried after killing his relatives.
c)     Naaradaru had done this in his previous birth and was jitendriya.
This vratha enables us to have control of our indriyaas.
Paraaka VrathaThis is a vratha, which can eliminate all sins committed by us.  One who is doing this vratha, must do fasting for 12 continuous days.  This he has to observe for three days (total 36 days).  With this all sins including Brahmahatya dosha also would be eliminated.
Eka Bhukta VrathaDuring Chaturmasya period, before starting eating one has to get served all the items in the bhojana plate (baale ele).  Till the completion of means he is not supposed to add anything on his plate.  i.e., everything to be served before start of bhojana itself.  But it does not apply to taking water.
Akhanda Vratha Every day he has to do bhojana only once (except Ekadashi). After bhojana, he is not supposed to take even water till next day bhojana.  Atleast this can be done during Chaturmasya dinatrayaas, i.e., Dashami & Dwadashi and must arrange for Brahmana-suvasini bhojana.
ChandraayaNa vrata
This vratha to be done from Ashada shukla paaDya to amaavaasye or from Karthika Shukla paaDya to amaavaasye.
Procedure 1– On the starting day, i.e, on Paadya, mix all the items prepared after naivedya as a single handful (1 ತುತ್ತು) and eat it. Take only one glass of water.  Second day, similarly take 2 handful of food (2 ತುತ್ತು), third day take 3 handful of food (3 ತುತ್ತು), and so on.  Increase one handful for each day.  Ekadashi nothing to be taken.  On the fifteenth day take 15 handful of food.  On sixteenth day (Krishna paksha paadya) take 15 handful and maximum same no of cups of water, on dwiteeya 14 handful and go on reducing one handful each day.  On last day of the month (ashada Amavasye or Karthika amavasye), he must observe fasting (upavaasa).    In this way, one month full vratha to be done.  Next day, he has to arrange for brahmana-suvaasini mrustaanna bhojana, he also to take normal food.  There is no necessity of doing udyapana.
Procedure  2 –  Paadya to Amavasye on all days (except on Ekadashi & Amavasye, where he has to fasting, i.e., upavasa) – one has to take daily 8 handful of bhojana after hari nivedana.  Maximum 8 glass of water to be taken.  On Amavasye day, he has to do fasting.  Next day he has to arrange for brahmana – suvaasini mrustanna bhojana.  He too can take normal food.
Diksaadhana vratha – Doing bhojana sitting facing different directions.  We have to do bhojana facing east, south, west, north respectively in the four months starting Ashada Shudda Dwadashi to Kartika Shudda dashami.
Period Direction
Ashada Shudda Dwadashi to Shravana shudda dashami East
Shravana Shu Dwadashi to Bhadrapada shudda dashami South
Bhadrapada Shu Dwadashi to Ashwayuja shudda dashami West
Ashwayuja Shu Dwadashi to Kartika Shudda dashami North
Gopadma Vratha – During the Chaturmasya period starting from Ashada Shudda Dwadashi, this vratha to be followed.  In the cow-shed, one must clean it with cowdung daily, and write the picture of a cow with calf.  The picture should be covered with 33 padmaas (written in rangoli).  Do the pooja of antargatha roopi in cow – Gopalakrishna and do the shodashopachara pooja.  Naivedya to be done.  33 argya to be given with the mantra –
aShTadravya samaayuktaM svarNapaatrasthitaM jalaM |
arGyaM gRuhaaNa dEvEsha bhaktaanaamabhayaprada |

Then 33 pradakshine and namaskara to be daana. Cow should be worshipped with gandha, pushpa, haridra kumkuma, gross to be given to cow.  In this way, this vratha to be conducted for five years, and in the end of the fifth year udyapana to be done.
Rules of the Chatrumasya Vratha -
On Ashada Shudda Ekadashi – one must get Taptamudra dharana.
We should do Sankalpa that we are performing Chaturmasya Vratha.–

Srimad Vadiraja Yati Jayanthi

courtesy: Sri.krishnan Muralidharan
Dear All,

Greetings and Namaste. On 24-Feb-2012, the Aradhana of Srimad Vadiraja Yati of Sri Madhva lineage falls. Though He is from a different philosophical school, He was a great Yati and Tapasvi and belongs to one and all.

Though he has composed severy hymns on Lord Vishnu (and also Durga and Navagraha), I am attaching a short prayer which is a jewel containing the essential teachings of all Vedas. This is titled Hitopadesha. This is somewhat similar to Sri Adi Shankara's Shatpadi Stotram in terms of purport. Many of his works have been published (and some are not in print and some have been permanently lost, as I learn).

Some quick snippets on Srimad Vadiraja:
1. He was an exponent of Dwaita philosophy and helped in reinvigorating it during the 15-16th century.
2. Like Sri Nigamanta Desika, he was an ardent devotee of Lord Hayagriva and has composed many hymns on Lord Hayagriva (as well as other forms of Vishnu). He has also composed several Carnatic compositions in Kannada
3. He is said to have had the darshan of both Sage Vyasa and Sri Madhwa during his visit to Badarikashrama. He is said to have got Trivikrama idol from Sri Madhva.
4. Though from Vaishnavite philosophy, he was respectful of all different faiths and he was instrumental in building the famous Dharmasthala Temple (Sri Manjunatha Swamy). He also had visited Mookambika Temple. His Vrindavana has Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, and Vayu shrines installed on 4 sides.
5. Several miracles are attributed to him - including Lord Hayagriva personally came in the form of horse and eating the Neivedya, resurrection of many dead people, etc.
6. He chose the time to enter into Brindavana at the age of 120 (much before Sri Raghavendra). His Vrindavana is in Sondhe near Sirsi in Karnataka.

May Srimad Vadiraja bless us all

Sudarshana Jayanthi - A Couple of Rare Stutis

Courtesy: Sri.Krishnan Muralidharan

Dear All,
Greetings and Namaste. Sri Sudarshana Jayanthi falls on 28-Jun-2012 (Thu) and in that connection, I am happy to attach a couple of rare stotras.
1. Sri Sudarshana Kavacham by Sri Vallabhacharya - Sri Vallabhacharya is one of the four Vaishnava Acharyas representing Rudra (Vishnuswami) Sampradaya following Shuddha Advaita philosophy. Though this is titled a Kavacha Stuti, the structure does not quite resemble a Kavacha structure (which typically prays protection of different parts of body using different names of the deities). Another unique difference seems to be that, though there is a Sudarshana mantra in the beginning, the stotra portion is on Lord Krishna himself (in other words, no differentiation is made between Lord Sudarshana and Lord Krishna).
2. Sri Narayana Stuti - Sage Durvasa - Brahma Vaivarta Puranam (Krishna Janma Khanda, Chapter 25). This hymn was created by Sage Durvasa when he was chased by Sudarshana Chakra after his ill-conceived giving of trouble to King Ambarisha (during his famous Ekadashi Vrat/Dwadashi Parana). Sage Durvasa goes to different celestial abodes and seeks protection but they refuse as being helpless. Lord Shiva scolds him for behaving like a Murkha and asks him to take refuge in Lord Narayana himself and hence this prayer. It is given that this prayer is known as Jagan Mangala Stotram and is capable of relieving one's extreme distress (whatever form). The story here is slightly different - in other versions, Lord Narayana asks Sage Durvasa to pray to Lord Sudarshana Himself.
As usual a few tidbids:
1. Sri Vallabhacharya lived between 1479-1531 and is considered one of the four Vaishnava Sampradaya Acharyas. His lineage is currently known as Pushtimarg. Like others, he has also created a commentary (Bhashya) of Brahma Sutra using Shuddha Advaita philosophy. He also has composed Purushottama Sahasranama, a collection 1008 names of Lord Purushottama (Vishnu) which is a collection of 1008 names used in Srimad Bhagavatam (I will share this in due course).
It is also given that he participated in a grand debate between Dwaitis (Madhvas) and Advaitis (Shankara lineage) in the court of Krishna Devaraya and he won with his Shuddha Advaita philosophy arguements. [This sort of debates have happened in the life times of all Acharyas of medieval times and different Acharyas won at different times - e.g Shankara winning over others, Ramanuja winning against Advaita, Madhva winning against both Advaita and Vishishtadvaita, etc. etc. So, an instance of win of one in the debate does not necessarily nullify other philosophies. For, Padma Purana mentions that there are four bona fide philosophies within Vaishnavism in Kali Yuga - so there is no question of philosophies being nullified when a debate is won. We could perhaps construe as a result of a particular debate and debating skills].
2. Though there are several Sudarshana Stutis, there are very few in the Purans as most of them are by Bhaktas. I have come across only a handful of Sudarshana Stutis in Purans. Ahirbudhnya Samhita and Vihageshwara Samhita are two of the texts that contain elaborate Sudarshana Worship. There are two ashtottarams and two Sahasranamas on Lord Sudarshana, as I am aware of. One of the Sahasranama is incomplete. There are several Kavachas.
3.As per Purans, Sudarshana Chakra was created by Lord Shiva to defeat Jalandhara and later given to Lord Vishnu. This is given elaborately given in several purans, although controversies exist. There is a separate Shiva Sahasranama created by Lord Vishnu in this regard.

Please note that there are yanthras attached to these slokas. They should be drawn , worshiped and later worn by the individual.

3.Stotras to protect mothers during pregnancy and ensure a safe delivery

1. There is a temple in Thikarukavur near Tanjavur of Tamil Nadu. The presiding Goddess is Garbha Rakshambikai. If you pray her it it is believed that she would ensure safe delivery. There are two stotras about her , one written by Sage Sounaka(

) and the other written by Brahmasri Sengalipuram Anantha Rama deekshithar ( http://stotraratna.sathyasaibababrotherhood.org/g94.htm ) . Both these great prayers can be used to ensure safe delivery.
2. Sloka number 29 of soundarya Lahari helps in avaiding abortion and ensuring safe delivery.

[A forwarded but an useful e-mail from Mr. Ravichandran Iyer. I trust readers would  be  benefitted.]

VASTHRA DHARANAM - Dharana Mantra.

Prokshanam to be made on the 'vasthram' by saying
"Om Bhoorbhuvassuvaha
Suseevo havya maruthaha suseenaam |
Ruthena sathyam Ruthasaapa aayan |
Susijanmaanaha suchayaha paavakaaha || "

After prokshanam take all the vasthram in hands and show them to Sun (light) and say:
"Udhuthyam jaadhavedhasam devam vahanthi kethavaha, dhruse visvaaya suryammm" :

Then shake down the vasthram by saying :

"Avadhoodham Rakshaha Avadhoodha Aradhayaha " |

Then tie the samll vasthram 'uthriyam' round the head.
Role the 'poonal' in the right ear. And say:

"Avahanthi vidhanvaanaaha Kurvaanacheeram athmanaha |
Vaasagumsi mamaghavachcha anna paanecha sarvadha |
Thathome sriyamaavaha |"

Wear 'Kaubeenam' (Komanam or Jatty) and remove the wet cloth.

Now start wearing the big / long veshti (vasthram) following these steps.
Hold the vasthram putting it behind you by left hand at one end
and at 6th feet by right hand
Measure exactly 3 feet from that left end
Hold the new point ( 3 feet) by left hand by leaving the end
move round the left hand to the point 3 inches up and 3 inches right to the 'naabhi'
put the 3 feet point there and hold it there firmly by left hand now move round the right hand with the 6 feet point over left hand and
place it at a point 3 inches up and 3 inches left to the 'naabhi'
and tight it as much as you can by pulling both hands in opposite directions
now check there should be no shrink in the edge of the vasthram
tightened around the body
(now is the tricky job which is a little hard to practice
and it is little more hard for persons who have bunch of hairs all over the body)
now slightly curl (out) the top edge of the vasthram
where holding by left hand keep hold of it
do not allow to go loose while curling
(it is nothing but as like as wearing a 'kaili / lungi' )
then do slightly curl by right hand as did by left hand
now your left hand will get free and move it some samall distance
towards your back and curl there
(I hope you got the idea)
yes, curl all over the edges
the curl of the vasthram should be very slim as much as you can
to get the required tightness
now check, where the top of the curled vasthram
and move it down to the circle, 4 inches below the 'naabhi'
or at 'low hib' now you will have two edges,
the left side will be samll and inner,
the right side will be long and outer
take the inner left edge to your left hand
and fold it to 4 inches breath along the edge
(if you want to bueatify the fold:
insert it at any point in the front curl and straighten the folds
by holding the top and next folds it in a straight posistion by left hand
and deeply pressing at the fold edge by right hand,
do it repeatedly for all the successive folds
by adding one by one) send the folded vasthram
between the two legs to the back side and
insert it in the curl of the vasthram at the center of the back
check there should be no twist in the folds
now put the bottom edge of the vastram
at the tip of the left leg on the floor and put the big leg finger on it to hold it
collect the loose cloth between two thighs
and shrink and twist at one point by which the vastram
should get tight arround the 'jatty'
insert this twisted end at the front curls center
and leave the vastram below the left leg big finger
now come to the other right end of the vasthram
and fold it along the lengh wise about five to six inches breath
and insert the folds above the previously inserted position
now catch the remaining one corner of vastram
which is hanging straightly below the insertion
and take it up and make some folds on it
then insert this fold also at the same place.
This is the completion of wearing 'Pancha Kachcham'.

Thula Masa - Sri Kaveri Ashtottaram

Courtesy: Sri.Krishnan Muralidharan

Dear All,

Greetings and Namaste. Next week the holy month of Thula (Aippasi in Tamil) starts and Thula Kaveri Snanam is an important religious occasion in this month. I happy to share a very rare Ashtottaram on River Kaveri whose source is unknown. I hope this will benefit those who plan to take dip in Holy Kaveri during Thula and equally too to those who can offer mAnasIka prayer to the river who can't make it personally to the river during this month.

As usual, a few snippets in this regard:
- Agni Puranam apparently mentions that all holy waters of the universe converge in River Kaveri during Thula and therefore is very sacred to take bath in the river during this month.
- Ptiru Tarpanam in Holy River Kaveri is also considered sacred and propitiates Pitrus.
- The entire stretch of Kaveri (from Talakkaveri onwards) is filled with temples on either side of its banks - including to two Srirangams (Sri Ranga Patnam near Mysore and Sri Rangam near Trichy). The no. of temples on its banks may be in hundreds and corroborates the sacredness of the river.
- River Kaveri is said to be the wife of Sage Agastya (LopamudrA's river form) - there is a Puranic story in this regard.
- There is also another river with the same name near Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh (about 50 kms from Indore). It also has a Triveni Sangama consisting of Narmada, Kaveri and another tributary - just opposite to Omkareshwar Temple.
- In Thula, the Sun is in Thula rasi (its debilitation point) and his Son (Saturn) is in exaltation. Sun is also considered the Atmakaraka (not to confuse with Jamini Astrology's definition of Atmakaraka). So, holy river bathing during this month is said to bring forth Atma bala which is otherwise muted (I am not an astrologer but read somewhere!).

May we endeavor to attain the blessings of Kaveri Mata.
